Emirates From SYD To SIN (I'm Long-winded...)

Wed Mar 13, 2002 7:52 pm

Sometime in March '02, I flew...

Fight No. - EK 067
Route - SYD to SIN
A/C Type - B777-200
Class of Travel - Economy
Seat No. - 16D
STD - 2115hrs (Actual push back: 2115hrs; Take off: 2129hrs)
STA - 0210hrs (Actual arrival: 0145hrs)

From a friend's place in the city, it didn't take too long to get to the airport. And it only cost AUD$18. Just enough to finish off what was left of my Aussie currency. Curiously, the signs at the drop-off zone did not quite match up with the location of the check-in counters. Despite the slight confusion and my hefty baggage, I managed to find it. EK had a whole line of counters cordoned off for them and everything LOOKED well organised. A member of the ground staff was on hand to tag any transfer (in Dubai) bags. Unfortunately, lines were LONG and things moved SO slowly! I was in line for about half an hour, and we had, funnily enough, no extra security line or post 9/11 procedure to go through. It was just inefficient. Period. (There were heaps of counters... mutter, mutter...)

The agent, who was most pleasant and chirpy, got me an aisle seat near the front & put in my FFP number, just as I requested. Thank you... Boarding was efficient, I think. I only got to the gate as the last group was getting on.

Three unusual things I noted. 1) At immigration, a group of MAS cabin crew were stuck as one of them had some sort of a problem. Some of them were looking quite anxious while the others just had daggers in their eyes directed at the poor lass. 2) Shops shut at 9pm!!! That's far too early. I could've still done alot more damage at the airport. 3) Two EK ground staff scrutinised, and I mean SCRUTINISED, BPs and passports during boarding.

And BTW, SYD airport really ain't anything to shout about!

I was met at Door 1L by the sole Asian (& male, BTW) FA who greeted me by my name. How lovely for this lowly Y class pax! Another C class FA was just as lovely, and chirpy to boot. This however was all undone by two FAs at the back of C class who just stood there looking blankly ahead, or indulged in staring, whispering and sniggering at some other pax who were boarding. Quite off putting really. And really rude! Thank goodness they were C class FAs.

Now I HAVE to say this, no matter how subjective it is. EK flights always feel REALLY PACKED TO THE GILLS (even if they're not) during boarding, both at the gate and on the plane. It may have something to do with the narrow aisles in their 3-4-3 configured 777s. I seem to make much more of a nuisance of myself on EK than on any other aircraft/airline combination. Thankfully the 777's overhead lockers are generous.

At my seat, which is in the first row of Y class, I encountered a problem. Someone (and her baby) was in my seat. Your (once again) confused author ran to an FA for help. She assured me that I was at the correct place, but had the audacity to ask me to sit in 16E, the middle seat. I gushed but politely declined. Miss "I-have-a-baby-and-the-bassinet-is-in-front-of-16E-but-can-I-still-have-the-aisle-seat-?" reluctantly moved and I finally got settled in. The lovely and chirpy (again)blonde FA asked if everything was now ok. I suggested that if there were spare aisle seats I would volunteer to move, not so much as to grant Miss "I'm-sulking-and-I-have-a-baby..." her wish, but to run away from her. FA said she'd check once doors were shut. Fine... Waiting...

Meanwhile, pathetic towels (small & thin; but at least it's cloth and we still get them!) & toys were handed out. A ground staff member walked on to check on some pax from the row behind. She discussed loudly on her walkie talkie, their status, in a rather brusque manner. It seemed that they had done something wrong! Or at least she made it sound as if they had... Hmmmm, not too professional...

The long safety videos came on, both in Arabic and English. The crew meanwhile, were being pretty useless. They milled around, forgetting to clear the towels, and being very lax with checking hand baggage. Us bulkhead row pax just left our stuff on the ground. And no one came to check on the infant seat belts of the 3 babies in my row! Oh well...

The flying camera came on (and boy was it cool!!) and soon we were off!

Note: I just realised that I really have to run and will continue my saga soon. My apologies...

I think they have done all they could for Sydney airport. There is nothing more and no more area to expand. I think its commendable that they managed to expand the airport under such tight constraints!

But I agree that it ain't much. But hey, its a spotters heaven! remember Kai Tak? It was crappy but it was a plane spotter's home sweet home!

Welcome to my starry one world alliance, a team in the sky!

Nice start so far.

Btw I've had the same experiences you've had on all my EK flights. The F/A's need to be consistent, some are nice but IMO the majority are arrogant, and plain rude.

I used to like Emirates very much, and there is no question that their accomplishments in such a relatively short period are admirable.

Yet, I have two major problems:

1) as the author of this trip report pointed out, flight attendants are inconsistent. On EVERY flight, I have had both good fa's as well as bad fa's, and unfortunately the bad ones are the ones we tend to remember and base our impressions on.

2) the seating is cramped in EVERY class. I always fly Economy, but their Business and First Class seats do not anywhere match the spaciousness of airlines such as SQ or BA.

But what compensates is the actual service. The inflight entertainment is excellent, adn the food is usually very good.

The quality of food is quite good but the portions are small IMO. Also I'm sick of getting the same choices; chicken or lamb. In fact all flights to and back from Europe have exactly the same menu.

The entertainment on the other hand is excellent.
