KLM ZRH-AMS-LIS-AMS-ZRH With 737-800 And -900

Mon Mar 25, 2002 10:53 pm

Yesterday I came home from a citytrip to Lisbon / Portugal. First of all I have to say that I have never been to Portugal before and I was very impressed of Lisbon. This city is so lovely and has so much culture.

Last december I bought on a Internet auction a cheap tickets with KLM to Lisbon. I flow alone because my friend flow nonstop with Swissair to Lisbon.

Friday morning, march 22nd I was at 6.00 am at Zürich airport for check in. It's
strange, but on KLM european flights you can not book any seats in advance, but since a friend of mine know a person from KLM Switzerland I had on all my
flights pre-reserved seats.

KLM flight 1952 (NW and CO codeshare flights)
Boeing 737-800
Seat: 10F (Economy Class with Business Class seats)

Boarding was very fast, due Swissport ground staff boarded the plane from the last rows of the plane to the front. When I entered I was greeted by a friendly Flight Attendant. I took my seat 10A which was a Business Class seat but in Economy Class. KLM has on their new Boeing 737-800 and -900 Business Class section till row 10 in a comfortable 2 and 3 layout. This flight had Y Class only till row 5. Flight was almost full. I noticed that the seats were not leather seats and there was no TV screens in the plane (on such a new plane as well as on the 737-900 were also no tv screens are in the aisles) Safety demonstration was
made by the crew! The purser spoke German and the pilot spoke even Swiss german. But I was shocked about the in-flight service, we got only peanuts!!!, a cake and just one drink! Peanuts on a early monring flight is just a joke. However I love the NG Boeing 737's jets.

KLM flight 1687 (NW and CO codeshare flights)
Boeing 737-900
Seat: 10F (Economy Class with Business Class seats)

The plane looked beautiful in the KLM livery and looked very new. However we had about 30 minutes delay and then they began boarding - it was strange to see, that they let all passengers in the plane. The Business Class seats looked nice and spacious. Cabin Crew was very friendly again, except for the purser, which was an unfriendly lady. But service was again very cheap. This was a 3 hours flight on lunch time and KLM serves you only 3 small sandwich (in a cheap
plastic box togehter with a drink service) If you order a coke you get only the cup, not the whole can. Cups were all in plastic and on the whole flight I didn't get any cutlery. After the sandwich service we were offered a warm cheese/bread roll. No sweeties. I drunk a proseco and asked for a glass of sprite). After a while a second drink service started. But the sandwiches were delicious. Again only a cup and a few minutes later they started with the Duty free sale and after that, the crew was gone for the rest of the flight. Passengers who ordered tea or coffe were given a very small cookie. Landing was very powerfull and amazing, due the airport is located in the middle of the city and you have perfect view over Lisbon.
Overall the 737-900 is a great plane and looks great inside. At one o'clock I arrived and took immediately a taxi to the hotel. Gosh was it hot, it was about 28 degrees warm. In the evening my colleague arrived, who flow with the Swissair evening nonstop-flight to Lisbon. He got a hot meal on bord and
enjoyed another perfect Swissair service.

After two hot days in beatiful Lisbon it was time for flying back to Switzerland
with KLM through Amsterdam.

March 24th
KLM flight 1688 (NW and CO codeshare flights)
Boeing 737-900
Seat: 4F (Economy Class with Business Class seats)

In the sun the Boeing 737-900 looked "very hot". On this flight I had the best
cabin crew ever on any KLM flights. Young, attractive, very friendly and a very
nice purser. The flight was completly full and Business Class was again only till row 3 like on my previous AMS - LIS flight. I had the same very cheap service
as on my incoming Lisabon flight. But the crew was very good. Duty free came
around and after that the Crew did a break untill the landing. On 5.00 pm Amsterdam time we landed at Schiphol Airport where I had to wait till my 7.20 pm flight to Zürich. Sandwiches were delicious again, but again very small and they were again in the cheap plastic box. But at least on both flights I could choose between chese or meat sandwiches

KLM flgiht 1969 (NW and KQ codeshare flights)
Boeing 737-800
Seat: 16A (Econonmy Class seat)

Departure was 10 mins to late, but due strong back wind we even arrived 10 min earlier in Zürich as expected. Flying time was only 1 hour. This time I had the real Econonmy Class seats in a 3 and 3 layout. Legromm was Ok and the seats were confortable, although KLM has not leather seats on European flights as Swissair has. Funny thing was that 4 of the previous crew members from LIS - AMS flight worked also on this flight and I said "hello again" to them and they were smiling to me. The crew served us peanuts and/or cake (same as on ZRH - AMS flight) and a drink. I had a Coke light and I get a 2 dl can. The service was cheap as on my 3 other flights before. Seats were OK, but I prefer to fly in the Business Class seats, even it's Economy Class *smile*

Overall, I like KLM, don't ask me why, maybe it's the fact, that I love their fleet?
Compare to Swissair, KLM service is very deep level, Swissair serves you hot meal on such long flights like AMS - LIS - AMS, real cutlery, route map information from their TV screens, music when you enter the, leather seats and pre-reserving of seats also on European flights.
But the KLM Crew was warm, always helpful and nice to me, this is positive thing as well that you also can earn Flying Dutchman points on a "auction ticket". And I love the Boeing 737-800 and -900 airplanes, they are so powerfull.

hope you enjoyed this trip. For more information just ask me
Best regards

Nice trip report. I also like Lisbon very much and hope to go there next month (on Lufthansa).
The city as well as the airport is very nice.

Actually I think it's alright to get a drink and peanuts on ZRH-AMS but on the leg to Lisbon some more would be nice.
Lufthansa served me breakfast on FRA-LIS and dinner on LIS-FRA when I went there in 2000.

Hi Mike!

Great trip report. Seems that you enjoyed your weekend in Lisbon, but the best is, that you got the 738 and 739. I hope that I get also the chance to fly with one of the 737NG`s soon.

Seems like u sure had fun. That is a bit of a joke, getting peanuts on an early morning service. Atleast a croissant instead to go with the cake.
See any exciting aircraft at LIS and AMS?

Hey guys
Thank's for your comments. KLM european service is really bad, they didn't have Baileys on the ZRH - AMS - ZRH flight for example, they only had cheap looking red- and white wine to offer, Heinecken beer and my kind of proseco and other small sortiment of spirit. Swissair offers really more (SR 3496 as you mentioned on your ZRH-VIE flight report) and as you said B737-700. And it's hard to understand that a KLM didn't install tv screens in such new planes. It's hard to say, but KLM is a tourist airline, better than a charter airline, but not as good as Swissair. But I love the Boeing 737-800 and 737-900. By the way, in AMS I saw Ukraine International, Lithunian Airlines, JAL MD11, Kenya Airways Boeing 767-300 and in Lisbon I saw a Boeing 767-200 of LAM of Mozambique, a Varig Boeing 767-300, a Yes Boeing L1011 and a Boeing 707 Republique of Mozambique (I guess).
And finally, I really can recommand the city to everyone. If you ever fly to Lisbon during the day, try to book a window seat.
cu soon,

I can recommend the window as well. Especially the big one in front  Big thumbs up Got that one for landing at LIS thanks to the nice pilots (that was pre Sept. 11th though).

Hi Mike,

Nice report.
I don't think you should blame KLM for not having any TV-screens or such. There are many airlines in Europe with KLM who don't have any. Like Lufthansa or SAS.
But I have to agree that they should improve thier service! Just to mention that thing about the peanuts...

Regards, Simon

Hi Simon,
sure it's OK to have no tv screens in the cabin but I think it's a good idea to install the screens. For example almost every passenger is interested on which route we fly and which point we are overflying when we are in the air. smile

By the way, I forget to mention that KLM didn't give any newspapers to the Economy Class passengers. Even in Amsterdam or so, there were no newspapers offered at the gate. Only Business Class passengers get a newspaper.... I remember me, that Swissair and Crossair gave always newspapers to every passenger, however you had to take sometimes your newspaper at the gate.
