LH Compared To SR/LX Between ZRH And HAJ

Thu Mar 28, 2002 10:14 pm

ZRH - HAJ LX3566 seat 25A Y-class
HB-IJB A-320 (livery: SWISS sticker-version)
sched dep 0715 (dep. 0846 airbourne 0900)
sched arr 0830 (arr. 1005 touchdown 1000)

Due to CeBit fair in HAJ this morning flight on a Crossair Saab 2000 was replaced by a Swissair A320. However the passenger load was only about 50. So thats way this was my unforseen last Swissair flgtht.
I cheked in (including lugage) on the self-check in machine in Terminal A. Our gate was A56. As usual a huge choice of newspapers was available. The bus brought us to a remote parking position where we boarded HB-IJO at about 0700. Hot towels on C and small refreshing twelettes on Y-class were distributed. There is no inflight magazine anymore, except "The Guide" with useful travel information. After the Maitre de Cabin welcomed us the captain came on the loadspeaker to inform us that a cargo-loader has hit our plane and that the experts have decided to ground this airplane. Bad look for Swissair on that morning. We were informed that soon a bus will bring us to the terminal and we will leave from gate A63 were we will board an aricraft presently on the approach from Geneva.
Neverthless breakfast was served. It was beverages, sandwich and croissants (plural!). The bus was coming and as announced we changed the aircraft. Boarding nr.2 was at 0830 and this time everything was ok. By the way, we could not see the damage from the bus which was done to our aircarft.
Our flight was finally delayed by 90 minutes. We took of from runway 32 as the winds were strong and not coming from the usual direction. The climb was quite turbulent but once overhead the cloads it was smooth again. An other round of breakfast was served. This time beverages, sandwich, croissant or choclate croissants (plural again). Then after the trolley with duty free items came around. While on decent the crew handed out choclates and postcards (now a real souvenir). On the cabin screens the airshow was running and some movies I don't remember what it was, as it is a bit boring to watch pictures without hearing the sound. After a super-smooth touchdown we reached the gate on 1005, 95 min behind schedule. The crew was very efficient, no wonder with only 50 Pax and very friedly.
Well done and good bye Swissair!

HAJ - ZRH LH5400 seat 6A Y-class
D-ACJH Canadair Regional Jet (special livery, don't know the name)
sched dep 1735 (dep. 1757 airbourne 1810)
sched arr 1855 (arr. 1904 touchdown 1901)

This flight was a fly-smart avard ticket booked on the internet. The booking was done very easily 10 days before the flight took place by internet. The queue for check-in in HAJ was quite long and it took about 15 min to check-in. Later I found out that there are also machines. The plane was standing on the fingerdock position A02, but as the CRJ is so small, there was a stair going down from the end of the "finger". Boarding was a bit delayed due to heavy traffic in ZRH and it finally took place at 1730. 39 Pax were on board on this friday evening flight, seats are very narrow and in grey leather. We took off from runway 27R, climb was a bit bumpy but the noise level on the CRJ is quite nice. As the plane was about 80% full it took quite a while until we got our "dinner" which was beverages and a sandwich (cheese or ham) - singular. The crew was friedly but the captains announcements bearely understandable. After a quite short flying time of 51 minutes we touched down on runway 28.

ZRH - HAJ LH5455 seat 14F Y-class
D-ACHH Canadair RegionalJet
sched dep 0910 (dep. 0906 airbourne 0916)
sched arr 1025 (arr. 1019 touchdown 1016)

The queue for check-in in ZRH on the Star-Alliance check-in was quite long so I took the C-class check-in which was empty. This time I got a seat in the last row of the CRJ. The flight left from gate C13 which is the temporary bus gate area of terminal B. Boarding started at 0855 and as there were only about 17 pax it was quickly don e. Our aircraft was one of the four Regional Jets parked in the same area (HAJ, BER, MUC, DUS). This time we left ontime for a take of on runway 28. Breakfast service started soon after reaching our cruising altitude and it consisted of beverages and one sandwich (salmon or cheese) followed by another round of beverages. Flight was smooth and uneventful. Due to quite strong winds the flight time was rather long. Landing on runway 9L and again parking at the dock using additional stairs. LH CityLine offers clearly a better product than LH on its short-houl routes. The crew was friendly.

HAJ - ZRH LX3569 seat 16A Y-class
HB-IYA Saab 2000 (Eurocross colors)
sched dep 1820 (dep. 1817 airbourne 1822)
sched arr 1940 (arr. 1931 touchdown 1924)

And finally my last Crossair flight:
In Hanover all LX/SR signs were already replaces by Swiss ones. The queue for check-in in HAJ at Swissport was very short (they only had to handle 2 flights at that time). Total 29 pax boarded ontime at 1800 the bus which brought us to the plane. Newspaper and the inflight magazine was available and we left early. Refreshing towels were distributed before takeoff. After reaching cruising altitude we got beverages (including Champagne), a sandwich (ham, cheese or dried meat) another round of beverages, fresh fruit and before landing a chocolate. The service was efficient and the 2 ladies friedly. Compared to previous Crossair flights between HAJ and ZRH the service was reduced. The noise level in the back of the Saab is equally good to the CRJ but the seats are more spacious in the Saab.

Finally we can say the Regionals offer a better product that theis "Mothers" and LX/SR is a bit better in service than LH, which was not a surprise. Looking forward very much to see all these improvements of Swiss...

I am happy that you enjoyed your flights on Swissair and on Crossair. I am a Saab 2000 pilot and I have flown this ZRH-HAJ segment several times. Hopefully I will be able to keep my job with SWISS and continue to fly it.

I am also happy that you liked the Saab 2000. This plane is grossly underrated by most pax. In my opinion it is every bit as nice as a CRJ, unfortunately it has the vibrations which come with any prop plane. But the noise level is surprisingly good. Also, we have far better short field performance than a CRJ, allowing us to go to Lugano, London City and Bern.

Great report!!

Great trip report. I was very happy to hear that Swissair/Crossair offers a better service than Lufthansa Cityline. I think Swiss will really grow to the best european airline! But I will miss Swissair and Crossair.
