i just returned from a day trip to indianapolis (not to see the big race, however) on northwest.

i left nashville at 1 yesterday afternoon (5/25), flew into detroit's NWA terminal which is absolutely amazing and then into Indy. The equip. on the BNA-DTW segment was a DC-9, while the equip. on the DTW-IND segment was a 727. The brakes were squeaky and loud, but it was nice to see such a beautiful aircraft in service. Paramedics had to board the aircraft in Indy as a passenger had either fallen or fainted, but otherwise the trip seemed to be safe. The only delay on outbound trip was a 30 minute weather delay. Detroit ceased ground operations for approximately 30 minutes as a thundestorm moved through - I slept through it all anyway... As for proof that it wasn't a NW scam because of some minor crap - all flights were delayed, including the 744 flight to (I think) Tokyo.

Returning today was quite simple. The flight from Indy to MEM was averagely boring - you can't expect much for a scheduled 1 hr 30 min domestic flight... Arriving barely ahead of schedule into Memphis, I found that although my new gate number was only 3 gates away from my arriving flight's gate, it just so happened to be at the end of the opposite wing of the airport... B-29 is nowhere near B - 32... Glancing at the departures screen I noticed the flgiht was to be delayed 29 minutes, so I took my time and picked up an overpriced ice cream... the flight ahd been delayed out of Detroit but no word on why at that time. The plane arrived and looked fine, however after they deplaned they weren't in any rush to board us. As boarding time passed, we learned that the flight was to be delayed even further because of an equipment problem - the radar was out and storms were developing between MEM and BNA - i accepted this as a decent excuse as safety should be a top priority... They warned us the delays could be an extra hour or more if the radar needed to be fixed/replaced, however an extra aircraft was found and we proceeded to gate b - 37... quite close to the original gate i made my first exodus from.

making up for the hour delay, the pilot used the power of the DC-9 and we made the flgiht from MEM to BNA in just over 35 minutes. overall, the service wasnt bad - refreshments were onyl served on 2 flights, but thats cool - none we're ridiculously long and it was on only the shortest flgihts that the drink services were cancelled. for those of who who say northwest is horrible, im sorry, the aren't. they are mainly a US domestic carrier (obviously with significant international flights, however) and you should treat them as such. I don't expect to be pampered when I fly. I expect to get from point A to point B safely when I travel and I was pleased with the friendly attitude and sympathy shown for the passengers when the flights were delayed. NWA cares - I don't doubt that and I appreciate that more than anything else.

You had a totally different take on the missing beverage services than I did. On my last trip from Chicago to Birmingham (ORD-MEM-BHM-MEM-ORD), the beverages were not totally eliminated between Memphis and The Magic City, but the selection (or lack thereof) left something to be desired. The only things offered were water or orange juice - each in a prepackaged 8 oz. plastic cup covered in foil. (Incidentally, I had the water and it was nasty. It tasted just like the plastic cup it was packaged in.) I understand that the flight was only 45 minutes (or so) long and most people can go without liquid refreshment for such a short period of time. However, is it that big of a deal to give the passengers the CHOICE of a full (or even less limited) selection of drinks on this length of flight? In the good old days of the eighties and early nineties, Eastern was able to serve beverages on shorter flights between BHM and ATL. Even last year, NW still had drink service on this route, so the argument that the flight length prohibits drinks is not valid. And I could be wrong, but I think even Southwest has a full beverage selection on comparable flights between BHM and BNA. In my opinion, this type of "cheapness" (even though seemingly slight) is what causes frequent travellers to begin to prefer certain airlines and avoid others.

You're right, selection should always be there. If I get to the point where I'm so thirsty that I need a drink, then I ask, but hey, if I can't live for 45 minutes without a drink I must have some serious issues. I'm sure that all airlines have soft drinks on board, yet they may not offer them at all times. For instance, on a trans Atlantic flight soft drinks are served basically until sunrise, then Breakfast comes around and the choices are usually water or a juice of some sort. If you ask, selection is always greater, but I find tyhat I have no room to complain unless I've been denied something If eel I deserve. I do like your comment tho, Ana767. It's great to have objection to posts and to see the different aspects of airline service!
