Me and my friend (B737-112) decided to go on a helicopter flight from KVNY (Van Nuys) to KBUR (Burbank) to Van Nuys. It sounds odd but it was well worth the trip and the money. This type of chopper was called the Engstrom F28. My departure started out by departing in a south to southwesterly to avoid an incoming arrival to 16R/L and we made a right turn heading Eastbound torwards KBUR Airport. Our indicated airspeed settled to about 115 mph (100 knots) and the groundspeed on the colored GPS was pecked at 82 knots. Maximum altitude we got up to was 600 feet (AGL). Once we got to KBUR Airport area we flew well North of runway 15 and I saw about 3 jet departures. There was quite a lot of air traffic around the valley which is very common in that area. On the way back to KVNY we flew above the 134/101 freeway then over the Disney and Warner Studios westbound back to KVNY. When we got to the airport at KVNY our altitude was still around 400 feet (AGL) above runways 16L/R. The landing was very smooth. The entire flight duration lasted approx. 20-30min.
The weather was quite fair for flying, maybe a little smog but it was not too bad. It was a little windy up at that altitude because of the oncoming marine layer that we mostly have in the Los Angeles area. We flew over were I live and saw a great view of my High School were I use to attend. The pilot who was named Yo Yo. Yes, Yo Yo. Strange name but he was a great pilot. He has a military aviation backround and use to fly choppers in the Italian Army. My friend did the same flight but different route which was mostly the from the Encino area to Burbank area. He even saw the most exotic and beautiful homes of famous people. Once we landed at KVNY a little nauseous feeling hit me all of a sudden. But it was well worth it. Looking forward to do it again!
