Actual arrival 16:00
Boeing 767-200ER SP-LOA "Gniezno"
I have to go from time to time to my company headquarters in Rhode Island. Sometimes I fly to BOS (usually via ZRH) but sometimes I fly directly to New York and then drive to Warwick. Since there is a Qualiflyer promotion on the LOT flights to NYC, double miles for the flight in C class, I decided (easily) that this time I am flying directly.
While flying I want to seat at the window. Since I booked my ticket only few days before the flight and because there is only 4 window seats in C on LOT 767-200 I got 1A, the second row window seats were already taken. Well, not the best but can be.
I arrived at the airport around 11:30 with plenty of time before the flight. Okecie terminal is rather small (as for the traffic it has to handle now) and when the transatlantic flights are checking-in you have to go through the crowd. The check-in procedure for the flights to US is the following;
- Airline staff checking tickets and passports
- Border Guard (security) x-raying all the luggage (including
- Check-in at the counter
- Passport control
The problem is that there are separate check-in counters for the business class passengers but the ticket check and x-ray is the same for everybody so I could end up waiting (or arguing). Fortunately when I arrived there was no line to one of the ticket-check counters so after few minutes I was at the passport control with my boarding pass. I have my US visa in old passport. At the passport control in Warsaw they ask me to show it to them when I fly to US. I always ask why and never got any reply better than "Just because I have to see it". Sometimes it ended up with arguing. This time nice lady asked me to show it to her so I asked why? For the first time I got the reply that made sense: "I don't have to see it, it's just additional check to make sure that you will not get into trouble after landing in New York". Since she was nice and gave me good answer I showed her my US visa J.
I did some shopping and wanted to go to the Business Lounge but on the way I saw the long line to my gate. Well, I will skip drink in the lounge; I will drink on the plane. I got at the end of the line and was waiting about 20 minutes before I got through. At the gate entrance there is an X-ray for your carry-on luggage and metal detector. Besides that, the Border Guard (which is responsible for the security) does the manual metal detection (with this wand stuff) and they search the hand luggage throwing away knives, scissors, etc.
I boarded right after and got to my seat. C -class on LOT 767-200 is
configured 2-2-2 with only two rows. There were 7 passengers flying so almost everyone had two seats for him/herself. Well, almost. I was the one, who had the guy sitting next to me L. Right after I settled down the FA came over with the drink; Champaign, OJ or water to choose from. There were newspapers on the trolley in the jet way so everybody could grab some papers but after the boarding finished the FAs took the trolley along the aisle to give the last chance to those who want to read something. In our section FA offered also the magazines in Polish and English. After the door closed they showed the safety film (cartoon) in Polish and English.
We pushed back at 13:15 and took over 15 minutes later. We flew north over the Baltic Sea, Denmark, Scotland, slightly south of Iceland and Greenland. While crossing Baltic Sea I saw through the window some small jet going opposite direction on our FL. It was close but it went so fast that I didn't manage to grab the camera.
Service started about half an hour after take of. Drinks and peanuts at the beginning. I took Campari with orange juice. In the meantime FAs distributed headphones and the entertainment program began. What I like in LOT that the first hour of the in-flight entertainment is the set of the video clips. Probably more than 20 Polish and foreign clips were showed.
Food was served. I took spicy chicken, which was absolutely OK with the exception that it wasn't spicy at all. The desert was delicious. They offered a tray of wonderful cakes. I got the strawberry one. That was gooooooooood!!! After the lunch was served there was a tray of small sandwiches and fruits available in the galley during the whole flight. Duty free sales began. It took a while and in the meantime they were showing the flight info plus map. Only after the duty free service finished they started a movie. That was "Good advice". I had a lot of fun, really good. There were also 10music channels available for the duration of the trip.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. No complaints about that. I asked the purser to check with the captain if he would allow for the cockpit visit but I didn't get the permission. Well, I didn't expect anything else but still worth of try.
The surprise was that they didn't have the amenity kits. No idea why since that was offered on the previous flights.
The supper was served about 1,5 hour before landing. It was good too but no cake L.
The flight itself was absolutely smooth. No bumps, not even shaking. We landed at EWR at 16:00, 50 minutes before scheduled landing. The strange thing was that we taxied to the gate but like 50 meters before it the engines were shut down and we were pulled to the terminal. The captain announced that there is such procedure at EWR. Anybody knows why?
To summarize; very good flight, good service, no PTVs and no amenity kits (probably temporarily). I would say 7 on scale 1 to 10.
The return part will follow.
