JFK-FLL-JFK On JetBlue(B6) Part I: The JFK-FLL Leg

Fri Jul 26, 2002 4:02 am

Well, my Aunt/Uncle and Cousin had decided to go down to Florida to visit the inlaws so naturally, I was invited to go along because my aunt being the nervous flier she is, likes to have some other people with her who knows what is going on. So, we booked our reservations at a great price (About 179 after tax) and a week later we were jetting down to Florida!
The excitement started the night before my 810am flight and me living in New Jersey and my Aunt out in Long Island, I slept there the night before. After a very good dinner at a restaraunt referred to as The Pig by our family (portions are huge!) we went to bed and prepared ourselves for the trek down to FLL to visit...... old people.  Smile()

_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_- The Report

The sound of the alarm came at 540am and after a sleepless night, I cralwed out of bed and got showered and dressed. The taxi was to come at 605am, and at that time, a Lincoln Towncar (Like a taxi would be anything else?) pulled up at the driveway and by then we were ready to go.
After packing in our luggage we headed out to JFK's Terminal 6, the devoted jetBlue palace. Upon arrival, an Eva Air Cargo 744 stood to our right and it was massive, like REALLY massive.

We pulled up and two skycap members and one jetBlue ground agent opened up the car doors and took all the luggage out of the trunk. Service, eh? We went inside the terminal and joined the line of about 120 people. I knew this would not take long since jetBlue has 40 Check IN counters at JFK (yes,I did type 40) and 28 were open this morning. 5 Minutes later our passes were printed and our bags had tags so we were ready to make our way to Gate 15 for departure. When I walked to the gate, I saw Estrella Azul sitting along the way a bit further back and I gasped as I thought this would be my plane- and it was brand new.

However, I walked up to the window and was greeted by N522JB, Blue Ribbon with the Harlequin tail, my favorite of the 4. I saw in through the cockpit window and since he cockpit door was open, I saw the first row of those comfy leather seats I truly adore. *Smile*

Boarding was called for the 705am to FLL a few minutes later, and that flight, operated by Midnight Blue, was full, so we couldnt not take the earlier flight. After boarding ended for Flight 17 to FLL, I went with my uncle to Hudson News were we proudly stocked up on teeth-rotting, sweet and irrisestibly addictive gums and candies. 8 Dollars worth. So, we got a few things. To be specific, 5 packs of gum and 3 packs of Lie savers. We went back and my aunt nearly passed out when she saw all that candy, and my cousin was playing computer games on her Laptop and sorting out things for her work (She is a scientist of sorts).

After looking around and watcing a Nigerian Airways 742 land and an EVA Airways 744 Depart, pre-boarding was called for our flight. At that time 135 or so passengers lined up and looped around the Terminal circle (For those of you who have been to the gate area of Termianl 6 in JFK, you will understand). Naturally, the gate agents didnt do anything and just boarded the plane. Right before I boarded, an Air China 747 rocketed by on take off and it was an amazing sight to see that 747 lift off the ground... Such grace!

I boarded and was greeted by every FA and the pilots, of which they ALL commented on my jetBlue T-Shirt I was wearing (My Harlequin shirt...How appropriate, right?) The flight crew was VERY nice and helpful in getting passengers bagsd stowed and seated...or in other words readied for an on-time departure. Sitting in my comfy leather seat I look out the window and stared and a jetBlue groud crew member waved at me. I gave him a thumbs up.....and felt.... special. Heehee...

We pushed back and taxied to Runway 31L which would be our runway of departure this morning and jetted into the air after a 34 second take off roll in which the inevitable screaming baby episodes began. The baby shut up after take off, thank god. We lifted off and made a sharp turn to the left which afforeded great views for my photography purposes. At that point, I noticed the TV's were not getting reception for channels 14-24 so no Game Show Network this time around, oh well.  Sad

We reached cruising altitude and the drink service began. I ordered a Ginger Ale. About 7 minutes later, the drink was brought back to me since jetBlue uses a waitress style system. I received the full can, as always on jetBlue, with a cup containing no ice, just like I asked for. Then the snack service came around and this trip offered: Blue Chips(grown from Peruvian Blue potatoes), Cheddar Whales, Biscotti, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Bagel Mix and Animal Crackers (The Barnum and Baily nabisco things). I chose the Blue Chips like I always do, and gobbled down 2 bags for breakfast while taking pictures and looking out the window.

Then, Evelyn came over and asked me how my pictures were going after we had a brief conversation before pushback. I said they were going really well and she invited me into the cockpit after landing! Yay! A Cockpit Visit!!!!!!!
She then asked me if I collected things from TWA and I said I had a few things. She said she had many many things. Following, I said I was not fond of TWA and it was then I found out she worked for them for 16 years! Ooops!

The flight continued on normally and over Savannah, GA we climbed to FL 420 to avoid some weather. About 20 minutes later, we started our decent into FLL and the spoilers came up around 36,000 feet. This was the first time I had ever decended with spoilers and it was quite a steep decent. We landed a few minutes later on FLL's runway 9L after zooming in over the highway. We made an....ok..... landing and then taxied to Gate C4 where the doors were opened and people deplaned. We stayed in our seats until the plane was completely off loaded and then made our way into the cockpit for a visit, and it was really a treat. After a few minutes and a couple of pictures, we thanked the crew and left Blue Ribbon after another GREAT jetBlue flight.

My return flight will be posted when my hands are not so tired.

Great report!

Did those channels not work for the whole flight, because I find that sometimes during taxi or any tight manouvers in the air some channels black out (Due to normal aircraft movement...) for a few seconds.

I've thought about wearing my jetBlue shirt on their flights and have second guessed myself. What did the crew say to you?

By the way, I've found that jetBlue's flight attendants are the friendliest in the industry, and are very inclined to start a conversation. And I think that I've had your crew before ( Smile)

Good report man !
Blue chips ? Now what does a European such as me have to think about this ? Or to be precise, how should I imagine what that is ?
And what's a "lie saver" ?

Thanks folks !

Yes, the TV's were out the whole flight!

Lie Saver- Ooops! Life saver, it should be. Sorry!

With the shirt, the crews would be like "I like your taste in clothing" or "neat shirt, I am going to have to talk to you...by the way, the captain liked it too, he's invited you to the cockpit after arrival"

Yes, they always love to start conversations.

I just got back from SJU on jetBlue, and this is the situation regarding the PTVs:

JFK-SJU
DirecTV on for an hour and a half of the 3 hr. 41 min flight, then the Map was on for another half hour after that.

SJU-JFK
Map turned on 90 mins prior to arrival, and DirecTV 60 mins prior to arrival.

Hope this helps

Hi JBLUA320!

Great report! jetBlue is one of the airlines I'm desperate to fly, but being from Europe it's unlikely I'll get the opportunity for a while!

I have a question about B6s service. You mentioned the 'menu' they offer onboard including cookies and chips. I wonder do they offer more substantial choices on their longer flights such as JFK-LGB?
The reason I ask this is because European low cost airlines tend to offer a much wider variety of buy-on-board meals and snacks. For example here are a few of the items Buzz sells on their flights; Salmon & chicken and spinach meze, Continental cheese and smoked ham with fresh fruit salad, Chicken salad on thick granary bloomer, Marscapone cheese with roasted vegetables on tomato bread etc etc. I just wondered why there is such a difference and why B6 doesn't give passengers the option to buy more than just small snacks on board(??)

Cheers!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I think the selection stays the same, but they put more on it.

Remember, on B6 you do not buy your food. On longer flights, I think muffins are served as well.

I wore my shirts on my school trip to ROC as well and as JBLU said, they are a conversation starter. From the check in agent, who changed my reservation to get me a window seat, to the Capt. who gave me an AOC printout, everyone seemed to notice it, and ironically, ask "Where'd you get it?"

Chepos: The Flights were packed both ways, easily 95% full. And lol yes it did take me a while to find the checkin desk.

As for the terminal, I don't know much about SJU and didnt even bother to notice, but the surrounding gates were used by CO, Spirit, Copa.

Nice report! I'd love to fly jetBlue one of these days. Is there anywhere you can find the Channel list for jetBlue's TVs?

I know the terminal he's talking about at SJU, but I've never been sure which terminal is which (although I've been there 8 times!), so I can't help you Chepos.

JFKTowerFan- Puerto Rico is the best!!! Enjoy your trip! Wish I were going...
