Northwest MCO-DTW-CMH

I savored this first leg... it could be the last for me on this type...  Sad

We arrived at MCO, one of the best looking airports in the U.S., at 3:00pm, and used the E-ticket kiosk again. It showed that the flight was oversold & my mom went to the ticket counter after we were done to check if this was the case. Turns out it wasn't! So we headed for security, where there was virtually no line, and headed for the monorail. We got something to eat at the cafeteria in that terminal & I got my scanner out. A few minutes after, an AA 757 was in takeoff, when it aborted & the pilot said this:

"Tower, American 3018, we're aborting, we've got smoke in the cockpit. We're delcaring an emergency & are gonna take it to the gate."

A few minutes later, the fire trucks & ambulances went shooting past. How it turned out, I'm not sure. We headed for gate 38. They were boarding the A320 flight to MSP out of gate 36. They then began boarding us, and as soon as I got on the plane, knowing this may be the last 727 for me, I asked to go to the flight deck. I was allowed in & the F/O immediately noticed my shirt, which I picked up at ERAU. It reads:

"I love the smell of JET FUEL in the morning!!"

He then said he went to ERAU & he graduated in 1990 & the Flight Engineer said he graduated in '86. We talked about the airlines that went in there & the engineer said he remembers AA, Eastern, Piedmont & Delta. I told them that I'm not sure what I want to major in, but I'm thinking about Aeronautical Science, or some form of management. They let me sit in the captain's seat, and when he got on the plane, he asked "Have I been replaced?" We got a laugh out of that. I told them that my favorite planes were the 727, 757 & L10. The F/O said that NW's 727s will be out of commercial service in January & that 17 are left. (They'll go on as charter planes for a while.) I asked what they'd fly after the 727s were gone. The F/O said he was going to the DC-9 for a while & the engineer said he was going over to the A319/320s. They said that they were going on to GRR. The entire cockpit crew was extremely friendly!!

After that, I took my seat (16F). We pushed back & taxied to Rwy 18L. Another NW 727 landed ahead of us. Then, we started rolling & I noticed how amazingly quiet the takeoff was from the inside (I know what they're like outside...) We made a right turn & flew sort of a downwind leg in climb. I had a nice view of the airports (MCO and, I think, Sanford). The climb was mostly smooth, a few bumps every so often. It was cloudy in MCO, but cleared up during climb. At this point, I was looking around the plane like a kid in a candy store (first 727 trip in 3 years) and noticed that the carpet was duct taped down, but I thought "I don't care, I'm on a 727!!"

Then, they started drink service. The snacks were braided pretzels & a 2-pack of Oreos. I'd never seen this in-flight before- I thought this was pretty cool! During drink service, the captain came on & told us we'd be flying around a thunderstorm, which was off to our left. It got moderately bumpy, but not too bad overall. We cleared it in about 5 minutes & he came back on & said that it would be pretty smooth for the rest of the flight. Our route would be out over ATL, along the TN/KY border, up over Ohio, Lake Erie, & into DTW. We only climbed to FL 250, probably because of weather. I flipped through "World Traveler" magazine, and noticed that EW wasn't a partner anymore. What happened? Then, I reached down for the recline button, only to find that there wasn't one! I then looked up & back, and noticed I was between the exit rows.

We started descent over Lake Erie & I saw either an ATA or National 757 fly overhead. I looked out the window & saw a city on the lake. I thought it was CLE, and then saw Burke Lakefront, which proved it. On approach, we made several turns, probably to let the traffic settle, and landed at 7:30. We then taxied to gate A8 & the nostalgic 727 trip had ended. The captain wished me good luck at ERAU as I got off.

The new DTW terminal:
We then walked to the train in the new terminal, and rode all the way down, because our connection was at gate A71. I was impressed with the length of the terminal & it's nice looking. I noticed the double jetways on the international gates. We went to the gate & I talked my mom into going with me to the middle of the terminal. So we took the tram to the middle stop. I guess some of the stores aren't/weren't open yet, because I tried to find the "DIA store" & it wasn't there. Are there any stores where you can find Schabak models there? We only had a few minutes, so I'll have to try to fly us through DTW again when I have more time & explore some more of the terminal. We went back to the gate area to board:

I again talked to the pilots, who were very friendly. The Captain noticed my ERAU shirt. We talked about the DC-9s, and he told me how to identify which model of 9 you were on by the ship #.

Here's how it works:
Ship #s:
91** are -10s
97** are -40s
98** are -50s
99** are -30s

I found this really interesting. I told them the way I did it was if it was short, it was a -10, long -50, medium, -30. They let me hang around for a while & let me listen in to the checklists, and then I had to go to my seat, 16B.

We took off & 10 minutes in, we started descent. The flight was really smooth. Since it was a short flight, we were given the choice of a container of water or Orange Juice, the water being my choice. We landed on Rwy 10L after 26 minutes, and taxied back to where I started, Gate B36, which had flight 1927 to MEM listed for the next day (earlier today). We claimed our bags, but the HP passengers from PHX came down & after 3-4 minutes of confusion, a frustrated woman came on the PA & said "For those arriving from PHX on America West ***, your luggage will be coming out on carousel 3!!! For those arriving off of NW 469 from DTW, your luggage is still on carousel 4.

We then took the shuttle to Sunpark & drove home.

My opinion- Northworst??
Let's try a new name- NorthBEST!! (Somebody probably used that already, but it works.)

Great report, Northbest sounds good to me. My last flight proved that one!

Where at ERAU did you get the shirt? Bookstore?

I'm definetly gonna pick up an ERAU shirt when im in Prescott! What are you going to study at ERAU? I'm hoping for an Airport Management Course

U sure Prescott offers managemnt? As far as I was told, Daytona is the only one that offers management. Is this something new? I hope you read what RLPVD757 said before the post was deleted?

SR 103-Yeah, I got the shirt at the bookstore. I picked up 2 or 3 while I was there & I have two more. We had a meeting last Wed. at the Daytona Campus & we stopped at the store & ate lunch.

CMK10- I'm gonna either do Av. Science or a form of management.

I spelled "declared" wrong in the AA emergency part- I was in a hurry to do this one. My bad!

The PRC campus had the School of Business closed by Daytona back in 1997/98. To replace it, a new degree was created called STG - Science Technology and Globalization. A very lefty liberal degree and a very poor decision by Daytona... but that's how things go in PRC. The forgotton step child of ERAU.
