Scheduled departure time from MAN: 11:10am
Actual departure time: 11:20am

Well, this was it. My first ever DC10 flight, and I was looking forward to this for so long. I left Scotland at 5am for the 3 hour drive down to MAN, on approach into MAN on the M56, I seen an AMM 757, FR 732 and EI 143 all take off. I noticed that take-offs would be using Runway 6L so I wouldnt be using the new runway today  Sad
Anyway, we checked in at the MyTravel dedicated check in area before making our way to the main T1 departures area (before you go through to the departure lounge), Where I went to the upstairs seating area where most movements could be viewed. As I watched, I seen a CX 742F land and also quite a few BA ERJ145s.

So after sitting there for an hour watching all the planes (including a SQ 744 which made an amzing take-off, must have been pretty empty), we then went through to the departure lounge, where I got a Stella Artois (£2.60!) and had a closer look a 2 x BMI 332, a Corsair 743, PIA 742 all went past. Boarding was an EAF 742 to Orlando Sanford and then an LH CR7 arrived from Munich.

Anyway, boarding was at Gate 22 where I had a glimpse of the a/c to fly me to Tenerife, G-TDTW. Looked massive from close up. Boarding was on time, and we pushed back at 11:10am on the dot,,before taxiing for take off on runway 6L. Departure was swift and the DC10 climbed very easily into the sky before turning left, heading over the Wirral and down over Wales, towards Tenerife. For a change, the meal was very nice onboard.
I'll finish the rest later on.

Ok, as we flew along to TFS, about45 mins into the flight, we got the drinks service, of which I chose Stella Artois (£2), and then eventually the meals. We started descent into Reina Sofia, and landed on runway 8 (I think). Upon landing, which was very smooth, I noticed a JMC 753, Spanair 320/321, Air Europa 738 with winglets amongst other things.
So overall:
Flight: 10/10
Cabin Crew: Friendly, helpful 10/10
Food: 9/10
A/c comfort: 9/10

MyTravel overall: 9/10
Very good airline, and would fly with them again. TFS-MAN report will follow shortly. Any comments?

Excellent report!

I've never flown with MYT before. They seem like they are very good. It's sad that they are in financial trouble.

Yeah, for some reason they get bad press but I suspect you will always get a good flight with them, if you dont mind the legroom  Big grin

Graham,

SHOCK HORROR! At last, a genuinely good report about MyTravel Airways. After years as cabin crew with Airtours and now MYT, we have always endured such bad reports, and I can honestly say most of the time they aren't justified - BY/AMM/MON could have an incident identical to AIH/MYT, yet it would always be Airtours that was all over the papers. As the years have passed, our passengers have become more and more demanding, less respectful of the crew (to the point of being abusive/violent) and the compliments have become fewer and fewer - and despite popular opinion the (majority) of cabin crew are human, and it's nice to get just a 'thank you' from a passenger after running around after them for 10 hours with virtually no break!

Thinking back, the less you give, the less people expect. On the MD83 10 years ago, there was no IFE, things like pre-order meal choices, pre bookable seats and duty frees and Premium cabins were not even dreamt of, yet passengers always seemed much happier then. I think one of the biggest mistakes the airline has made is the introduction of new (chargeable) services like those mentioned above, paying extra for exit row seats - basically things that look good in the brochure, but unfortunately the airline just can't seem to get right, and of course the ones at the end of the abuse are the crew. On the A330-200 aircraft (of which there are 4 out of a full fleet of 49 a/c), every seat has a PTV - god help the poor crew if a screen is not working, the amount of flak they take, yet if the PTV's weren't there nobody would say a word. It doesn't help that Airtours Holidays always advertise the virtues of the 'Flagship' A330 & its PTV's, even in the Summer Sun shorthaul brochure - as a passenger once informed me "Airtours consistently over promise and under deliver", although their outburst is usually cut short when you wholeheartedly agree with them!

I'm glad you liked our DC10 - despite it's advancing years it's still the most reliable type in our fleet, it's fantastic for the crew to work on (it's a pity you couldn't have had the chance to take a look in the Lower Galley), and I think they look pretty good considering how hard they fly them. If the A330 is what 30 years of technology comes up with, you can keep it! Plans were for the DC10-10/30 fleet to fly for atleast another five years, but the way things stand now with MyTravel as a whole I don't expect we'll be around (certainly in our present format) for much longer, and if we are taken over/merge with another airline, I suspect the last pax DC10's in the UK would be the first things to go. A shame, not least because in the last year or so more and more passengers have started to show a real interest in the fact that they are on a DC10, probably because they're quite a rare site these days. We often get older passengers telling us 'last time I flew on one of these things was with Laker in the '70s!'

It was good to see the cabin crew got your approval too - the plus side of working for an airline that people laugh at when you mention its name is that staff don't get ideas above their stations, and I honestly think out of most of the UK charter airlines we have generally got a bunch of down to earth, friendly, hard working characters (some REAL characters) which makes coming to work more fun than I'm sure it is at certain airlines who favour looks over personality. All of us really miss Airtours because much more than just the name changed when we became MyTravel Airways - we all thought it was a daft name, and it looks as though we were right. However, whatever happens to MYT, I know we've all got some very happy memories and funny tales to tell from our 10 years at Airtours.

Thanks again for your nice report!

PS:G-TDTW has a few nicknames amongst the crew - Tinky Winky (G-DPSP is Dipsy), less complimentary is Too Delayed To Work, or in reference to the Flagship A330 'Grief & Total Despair about Toulouse's Wonderplane'!

Yeah loved it. Big grin
Got seat 3K on the way back, which as you will know also has slightly more legroom than the other seats...but the floor was soaked.
Anyway, my return report will appear soon.
