MXP-LHR And Back On British Airways

Fri Nov 08, 2002 3:19 am

Hello everybody! This is my second trip report and a very significant one for me, as I always wanted to someday visit the UK! and LHR as well Big grin so taking advantage of a whooping 120 euros round trip fare on BA I decided to pack a bag and go annoy my cousin in Bournemouth!

Saturday November 2 2002
Dep Time 11:50am Gate B7
Actual dep 11:50am
Arrival Time 01:00pm
Actual arr 01:00pm
Airbus A319-131 G-EUOE
Seat 17F EuroTraveller
Flight time 1:35

After a quick trip from Milan Central Station I got to Malpensa T1 at 9:30am and made my way to the BA counters to check in for my flights, luckily there was no lines so I got checked in quickly, I still had some 2 more hours until boarding so decided to walk around the terminal and watch the movements at that time (I saw a Germanwings A319 take off, the rest was AZ and the regular Euro flights)

At 10:40am I saw my little plane land and decided it was time to get to the gate, I cleared security checks and passport control in a wee (again the joys of being EU citizen  Big thumbs up ) I changed some Euros into Brit Pounds and proceeded to gate B7 where a shiny beautiful A319 was parked, I sent some last minute SMS"s and at 11:20am we where called for boarding.

Joyfully I boarded the flying computer and at the door 2 hot looking FA greeted me, the first thing I noticed was the leather seats in all the cabin! (really cool!) the cabin was spotless and well kept. I settled in my seat and waited for boarding to be completed, I also found the seatpitch to be pretty confortable (less cramped than in Air France)

Slowly the cabin filled up ( I guess and 80% load) and the captain came on the PA to welcome us aboard and to tell us some details about the flight, he also told us that due to one passenger not taking the flight we will have to wait until hisher bag was located and removed from the plane. in 5 minutes the bag was removed and we were free to go, at 11:59am we pushed back.

Another thing I noticed is that when the engines are started there is a slight smell of fuel in the cabin ( I noticed it also on AF A320)

Anyway we slowly started taxiing towards RWY 35R the safety video was shown on the drop-down screens, we gave way to a SNBrussels BAE-thingy to take-off and continued taxiing, we finally lined up and our little A319 rocketed down the runway after a short take off roll we lifted off and made a sharp right turn that offered us a stunning view of the alps and lakes near Malpensa a really beautiful sight!

We climber to our cruise altitude (FL360) and 20 minutes into the flight the cabin crew started their feeding process which consists of BA"s "All Day Deli" I got a Brie cheese sandwich, a peach tart and fruit salad all washed down with oranje juice, I must say it was really really good! Thumbs up to BA for the food yummy! Later on Duty free was offered and i was really tempted to buy a set of BA pen and pencil with the BA logo on them or 10 pounds but decided to leave it for the next flight  Insane

The flight route was more or less like this...

Milan-Alps-over Geneva-Paris-The English Channel (not the BBC  Wink/being sarcastic) and then south of London.

Soon after, fun was over as we started our descent into LHR it was really cloudy and bumpy all the way down, the captain said that ATC informed him that traffic wasnot bad and we will be landing in 10 minutes. When we broke out of the clouds we wher offered a nice view of London! it was really rainy and gray (typical london weather)

Our Captain made a really smooth touchdown on RWY 27L but he didnt used reverse thrust so you can imagine the hard braking! after exiting the runway we taxiied to our parking position in T1. I deplaned and made my way to the Central Bus Station to catch a bus to Bournemouth.

But good things always come to an end...

Wednesday November 06 2002
Dep Time 01:50pm Gate 52 T1
Actual dep 02:10 approx
Arrival Time 04:50pm
Actual arr 04:30pm
Boeing 767-336ER G-BZHC (Waves and Cranes)
Seat 25A EuroTraveller
Flight time 1:30

After spending 4 amazing days in Bournemouth (Lovely town!) it was time to go back to Milan, even tho i didnt wanted to.....  Insane

I arrived at LHR at 11:50am and proceeded to T1 to check in for the flight back to MXP, again there was no lines on the counters so check in was done in a breeze, after that I went to the spectators terrace to watch planes and take some piccies until boarding time, at 12:50pm I went back to T1 I cleared security checks in a breeze and walked to gate 52 to wait for boarding.

Boarding was called at 01:35pm and at the door was greeted by another nice F/A and made my way to my seat, the cabin also had leather seats and was absolutely spotless! the seat pitch was also good as it was on the A319.

The captain came on the PA to welcome us aboard he also speaked a little bit in italian and it was funny to hear him, we pusehd back and started our short hop to RWY 27L, the safety demo was shown on the monitors meanwhile and soon we where lined up and ready to rock! the 2 RR engines came to life with a delightful sound and we thundered down the runway, after a short roll we lifted off in a miserable london sky, after a bumpy climb we finally settled on a more confy cruise level.

Cabin crew started the snack service which again consisted of BA "All Day Deli" this time I got another brie cheese sandwich on dark bread, tortilla chips with dip and a strawberry dessert, all washed down with oranje juice again a really fulfilling meal! really good  Big thumbs up trays where collected after and the flight continued uneventfully.

Duty free service was offered and soon the alps where in sight signaling that descent into MXP was inminent, in fact thrust was set to idle and the crew prepared the cabin for landing.

As my seat was located just behind the wing I was able to hear all the whirring of the flaps and stuff (really cool!) we made some slight turns and line up on the glideslope for a RWY 35L landing.

At 4:30pm we made a firm touchdown, again no reverse thrust was used and the passengers received a nice dose of G-force while braking  Love we taxiied to our parking position and deplaned, later on I catched a bus back to Milan  Insane

So that way concludes my first trip on BA and my first visit to the UK, I really enjoyed it a lot

The UK is a nice country also Bournemouth is a lovely town (despite the crazy weather) I will surely come back soon as i will start my studies there  Wow!

BA is also a really good airline, the food was great, service was also good and the flights were on-time I will give them a 9 out of 10! of course i will fly BA again!!

Well folks thats it! I hope you liked it, questions and comments are welcomed as always!

Take care and cheers!

that's a nice trip report you posted here!  Big thumbs up

I was in London 2 days earlier with a friend...unfortunately not for spotting  Sad For the spotting portion, I will return to London after christmas......you should try LGW as well....also a very nice airport (see my trip report somewhere underneath yours for more about my trip...)

damn....you had even more in your "All day Deli" bag than I had....that's not fair Big grin

I liked BA as well.....great service, flights on time and I'm in love with their A319, I really liked the fact they showed flight-tracking during a flight of just 45 minutes..... Big grin

best regards,

Danny (KL713)

Great report.

Again, BA gets more praise from A.Net flyers. Impressive.

Will be flying to San Diego next Saturday, a good chance to compare and contrast short haul flights with their longer services. (I fly them sometimes to Argentina, always great).

MIAspotter, are you sure they didn't engage reverse thrust? Perhaps they engaged idle reverse?

Good report. Hope to fly BA soon!

Hey!!! Thanks for the replies! Is always nice to hear comments!

KL713: I will sure read your trip report soon, also nice you enjoyed BA and their A319 (cute little thing!!) but on my flight they didnt showed any flight tracking  Sad .

Capt.Picard: looking forward to your trip report!  Big thumbs up

9V-SVA: I am not sure if they used idle thrust reverse, I didnt hear the rumble of the RT, and as I am not a seasoned flyer i cannot tell the differences.  Confused (maybe the captains where testing new brake pads Big grin )

Airblue: Thanks! Yes back then I was looking for a cheap fare because BMI was charging me 245 Euros from Linate, then I checked the BA site and found this nice promotion! Looking forward to another MXP meeting!!! Big grin

Cheers and thanks!!!!!!

Excellent report!

I find BA one of the best International carriers. Yes, the prices aren't as good as Easyjet, Ryanair etc but the quality of service is far better.

Great report mate!

Being a seasoned flyer (hehehe sorry!  Wink/being sarcastic ) I'm sure they would have opened the reversers and just left it on idle, it doesn't use any more fuel than it otherwise would and means that the brakes don't have to work as hard - basically it is the most cost effective form of stopping!

I have yet to be on a flight where the reversers wern't deployed. Even upon landing on 34L at SYD, heading for the domestic terminal, with a roll through approved (ie you have 3 kms to land in) the 737 was held in the flare for a little longer than usual and the reversers were opened upon touchdown together with the spoilers being deployed. We then rolled down the runway slowing down as we went, utill we got near the end when the brakes were applied and we left the active.

I just wanted to tell you that I bought the BA pen set on my flight I took from LHR to FRA about three weeks ago. Since I work for an airline that is part of the One World alliance I am able to use the pen on my flights. I have gotten alot of compliments from passengers about the pen. I highly recommend that you buy them next time you fly.
