What an airport Singapore has. I have been to a good lot of European Airports and that tops them.
The first place we headed was, to get something to eat. The monitor screens were telling us that the flight to Adelaide was departing at 2230 from gate E5. When we arrived at that gate there was no one there as it was only 1915. Across the way from gate E5 was a Sushi restraunt. My sister didn’t want to try Sushi so we went into the cafeteria next to it. I had a cheese pastry and a coke. When we left there the gate number had changed and we were now meant to be at gate E8, which was quite a long walk from, were we were. They have horizontal elevators there to lead to the gate. They’re useless when people are walking on them, because they go as slow as ever, your better off walking to the gate. The time now was approaching 2130 and the gate was about to open. Once inside the boarding area, the gate agents handed out immigration cards for Australia. Boarding started at 2155, and they asked raffles class people to board first, followed by people with children. Finally it was my turn to board.

When I got on board I was assigned to seat 56F. It was near the back. I found the space on front of me on this aircraft a little tighter than the 744. The hot towels were given out again and collected. There was also a blanket and a pillow to have. There was music playing in the background. That was interrupted when the pilot came on to say a little bit about the flight. He said the flight duration to Adelaide would be 6hours and 15 minutes. He talked also about the route involved for tonight’s flight. He also apologised for the delay of 10 mins. I don’t know much about the waypoints in that part of the world so I’ll just describe what I saw on the Airshow. Pushback commenced at 2241 and the stewardess’s started the safety video on board the celestar A340. When we reached the threshold of the runway, we were there for about 3 or 4 minutes. I didn’t get a good view but I think we were waiting for aircraft to land. I like the A340 but it is extremely slow at gathering speed. My mother looked at me when we were taking-off as if to say is there much runway left. At 2252 we lifted off the runway. We were about 300 feet or so off the ground when this asshole behind me decided to leave his seat. One of the Stewardesses had to get up and tell him to sit down. From what I could see on the right of me was the Singapore skyline. We entered a little bit of turbulence on the way up. Soon we were levelling off at 10100m. We were flying between Sumatra and Borneo. Shortly later dinner was brought around. I decided to have the chicken done in a white sauce. Again it was served with real cutlery. It was delicious. After dinner we were flying over southern Indonesian Islands. I decided to listen to some music and watch airshow. With that, who came into the cabin, only the pilot. I decided to go the toilet and headed back to the end of the plane. The toilets were really clean. The pilot was having a chat with other crewmembers. I headed to my seat. I got talking to a bloke beside me whose wife is from London. He was from Australia. They were heading down to Australia on a second honeymoon. He is from Adelaide, and he was telling me what it was like. It wasn’t long before we were over flying the northwestern tip of Australia. I decided to get some sleep. By now my body clock was all over the place. When I woke up it was bright outside and the cabin crew were serving Breakfast. The Airshow was saying we were 350nm from Adelaide. For breakfast I had the noodles. I also think there was omelette on the menu. The breakfast was nice. As we were nearing Adelaide the pilot came on and said that we would be landing in 20mins and told us it was 22C and sunny. As we came into land the Adelaide skyline was on the left of me. The bloke that I was talking to earlier was telling me that we were landing runway23. The landing was very soft. Reverse thrust was used to slow us down and the full length of the runway was needed to land. A long taxi followed back to Adelaide International Terminal. We were given steps to get off the aircraft instead of a gate.
I made my way towards customs and handed my immigration card in. We then went to collect our luggage. I still had to get to the domestic terminal for my flight to Port Lincoln. The flight was scheduled for 1135. I had plenty of time, as it was only 0755.
I had a quick wash and a shave and headed to the domestic terminal which is about 5 minutes walk away. When we got there we checked in our luggage again. We then went through security. I found a bar on the way to the gate to have a drink. VB was the name of the drink to all you Australians. It was now 11.15 and we made our way to the gate. They started boarding at 1125.

On my way out to the aircraft you had to follow a yellow line. A steward welcomed us on board. We were allowed sit were ever you wanted too. About 2 minutes later the steward offered me a jumpseat with the pilots. I think they’d overbooked the aircraft. I was on my way up to the cockpit and he said it was all right and that I would have to sit here. I was in the first seat 1C. There were 2 rows on each side and I was on the right side. They got it sorted out and we were ready to go. At 1137 the throttle was applied and we made our way to the same runway we landed on, which was runway23. We passed the aircraft of Singapore Airlines, which wouldn’t be leaving till 1430. The steward took his position then, after he had gone through the safety procedures. At 1143 the Saab aircraft applied power and we left the runway after a short roll. The steward was sitting on front of me. I was asking him what height we would be cruising at. He told me it would be about 17000 feet. When we reached our cruising altitude the steward began service, which consisted of Apple pie and orange juice/or tea/coffee. He didn’t have a lot of time to give out anything before we were descending towards Port Lincoln. I was talking to a very good-looking girl beside me who was telling me that she does this trip every week. She was saying it gets very bumpy on the descent. She was right about that. We must have been descending at about 3500ft per minute. I got a good look out on front of me due to the cockpit door being open. We entered some very bad air turbulence. I had seen the pilot battle with the aircraft a few times. He eventually levelled the aircraft out and touched the aircraft on the ground very softly. I was the last to leave the aircraft as I was talking to the steward for a while. He was on the next flight back. We collected our luggage in a yard on a trailer.
That completed 2 memorable weeks in sunny south Australia.
I haven’t been on many other long-haul carriers but the service on Singapore Airlines was excellent. I will be flying them again.
It’s sad that Kendell is no longer more, as it was a great airline.
