I arrived at LAX's Tom Bradley International Terminal at 8:50 PM on December 13, 2002. The line for Economy Check-in was short, and the process was smooth. I had opted for an upgrade to Evergreen Deluxe when I made my reservations; however, the agent said the flight tonight was extremely full. After receiving my boarding pass, I had to carry my two checked bags over to the X-ray to be checked by security. The agent also recommended me to pass through security about an hour early. He said the lines could get pretty long sometimes.

I entered the line for security about 10:45 PM. The line extended all the way to the escalator in the middle of the terminal. I spent at least 20 minutes in the line before I was screened. Security was smooth, not exactly fast.

At the gate, ground staff were walking around the waiting area to check ID's. If everything was okay, they would write "OK" on your boarding pass. This way, ID wasn't checked while boarding. Boarding was quite smooth. They started by boarding Super First, Super Business, and Evergreen Club Elite passengers. Then they started boarding Evergreen Deluxe and Economy passengers by row.

The aircraft today was a Boeing 747-400 Combi in the new EVA Air livery. At first I really disliked the new livery; however, now, I'm starting to like it. This aircraft is configured for 272 passengers (8 in Super First; 16 in Super Business; 86 in Evergreen Deluxe; 162 in Economy). The seat pitch in Economy is 33"/34". I find that quite generous compared to some airlines that offer 31"/32". Those extra 1"-2" make a big difference.

On board, flight attendants came around with hot towels for passengers to freshen up. Our flight was delayed because the aircraft was still refueling, according to the Chief Purser. The wait wasn't too bad, since we were only late by about 10 minutes.

Once we were airborne, the flight attendants came around with snack mixes (peanuts, rice crackers, and dried peas) and drinks. A short while later, we were served dinner. Our choices included: pork with rice, or chicken with noodles. I chose the chicken with noodles. It came with a salad (with thousand island dressing), fruit, two chocolate chip cookies, and a HOT dinner roll! I was excited that the dinner roll was hot because for the past two transpacific flights I had this year with EVA, all my rolls were cold and wrapped in plastic. Our choice of beverages include the non-alcoholic ones, along with white wine or red wine.

After dinner, the lights were dimmed so everyone could get some rest. About half way through the flight, the flight attendants came around with cup noodles, sandwiches, and drinks. And around every 40 minutes, the flight attendants came around with drinks.

About two hours prior to arrival, we were served breakfast. The choices included: Chinese congee (Oriental selection) and scrambled eggs (Western selection). I chose the Oriental selection, which came with a hot Chinese bun, dried pork julienne, and some cold vegetables.

As for entertainment, EVA Air has been inferior in Economy. We still don't get our own PTVs. Only Evergreen Deluxe and higher get their own PTVs. In Economy, we also don't get any menus. Also, the seats in Economy are at least 11 years old. They are very outdated.

We landed in Taipei about 45 minutes early. Immigration for non-citizens was extremely long. There were about 50 people in the line, but they only had two immigration officers. By the time I cleared immigration, I waited for about two minutes to get my luggage.

I generally liked this flight with EVA Air. I'm looking forward to the days when EVA's Economy has new seats, PTVs, and menus.

Great report! I'm surprised that had only two immigration officers on duty at CKS terminal 2. The early morning is peak arrival time for flights from the US.

I like EVA too, I have been flying with them ever since they started servicing to EWR. I usually fly Evergreen Deluxe and the only class I have not flown with EVA is Economy. All other classes were flown by ways of upgrades. Eva's services are fine but I have to agree with you about the seats, it time to change or upgrade like all the other Asian carriers.

I was just on BR tpe-mnl-tpe and the seats in all classes are a bit outdated. I am with wants2fly on this. BR really has to upgrade their seats. Especially in 1st and business class to compete with other asian carriers. Otherwise BR isn't that bad. I flew them 10-15 times a year all over asia.

At first, they only had two immigration officers for non-citizens. Later, when the other immigration officers were done with citizens, they came over to help with non-citizens.

I usually would buy Evergreen Deluxe; however, the price in Economy was already incredibly expensive. LAX-TPE round-trip in Economy was around $1080; Evergreen Deluxe was $1300+.

I just priced Evergreen Deluxe for TPE-EWR-TPE right before the Chinese New Year and it was approx 1300usd. I could use the leg room. I have run into the same immigration problems in TPE at the BR terminal. They usually have a 2 to 1 ratio as far as the officers are concerned, citizen vs non-citizen.

Great trip report, I really enjoyed it. It really reminds me of my two flights on an EVA Air MD11 from Brisbane-Taipei (Return). It was a codeshare with Qantas.

I totally forgot about the drinks coming around every half an hour... Now that I think back to it, I thought that was a real nice touch.

Yeah, I think EVA Air's a pretty good airline... but everybody is right... The seats need an upgrading
