As we joined the tour, we were required to arrive at the airport quite early. We were told to check-in ourselves which was completed before 1130. Then after passing immigration and security check, we wondered around the airport before reaching the gate. I decided to walk to the gate rather than taking the automated train.

Boarding was through L1 as only one aerobridge was used for the 757. We boarded the aircraft at 1305. I was not too surprised by the Business class onboard, since I expected that it only featured wider seats and more pitch, but however, Business class still looked that it’s lacking in space. Economy Class was even worse; seat pitch was less that 32” as it wasn’t too easy to walk into the window seat. There were no foot rest. Flight was only about 65% full as the second section was left empty. Door closed at 1321.

Pushback at 1324 and take-off at 1337 on RWY07R. We didn’t go all the way to the TXY J1, we entered the runway via TXY J2. Lunch was served. It is actually one of the worse airline meals that I’ve had. I usually don’t find airline meal a problem, but this one was a little different. There was no choice of what the main course was as it was only a short flight. The meal consisted of one packet of dry fried peanuts, a croissant packed in a plastic bag (which means it was not heated), a bun with some weird sauce and tomato wrapped in glad wrap. Main course was a few small pieces of fried chicken and a pie with some sort of creamy sauce and salmon in it. Couldn’t say exactly what it was as there was no menu. It sounds okay but the main course was very dry and no taste as well. Even worse is that it was only just merely warm. I didn’t enjoy this meal too much. The best food in the meal was probably the croissant. Drink was a cup of orange juice.

Descent came at 1527 and gears down at 1544. Touch down was on RWY21 at 1547 and parked at gate 1 at 1553. 28 minutes behind schedule.

After picking up our boarding passes from the tour leader, we went through immigration and security check as there was no where else to go. At Kunming airport, only travelling passengers were allowed into the check-in area. Since China Southern ground work was handled by China Yunnan Airlines. So our luggage tags and boarding passes were printed on China Yunnan Airlines material. Gate area was close to the security checks as there were only 2 gates for international flights (I assume). We waited at Waiting Hall 1. Then at 0945, I saw our aircraft arriving on RWY21 from Guangzhou and arriving at gate 2 at 0955. Then the plane was cleaned and we boarded at 1020. Boarding passes in China is different to Hong Kong. In China boarding passes work on scanning the barcode printed on the front which differed from the magnetic strip on the back of the boarding passes at Hong Kong. This also means that there were no machines which the boarding passes were fed into. It was torn off by hand.

Doors closed at 1033 and Engine Start-up was not until 1039. Taxi only began at 1041 and take-off on RWY21 at 1045. Short taxi. Lunch was served on this flight as well. Same as the inbound flight, no choices. But this lunch was better than the inbound flight. The meal consists of a ham salad, a bread roll in a plastic bag (not heated). Main meal was Braised chicken with steamed rice and vegetables. Dessert was a sponge cake. Drink was Orange juice. Meal was provided by China Yunnan Airlines as trays and containers had China Yunnan Airlines printed on it. The main meal was hot and tasted quite alright.

Seat was the same as CZ342, so no comment on that. There were moderate turbulence throughout the whole flight and the seat belt sign was not turn off at all.

Descent was at 1157 and gears down at 1213. As we were approaching for RWY07L, I saw Macau Airport shortly before landing. Weather was very hazy caused by the pollution. Visibility wasn’t too good either. We touched down on RWY07L at 1215 and exited via TXY A8 and arrived at gate 62 at 1219. 11 minutes ahead of schedule.

Next trip report coming up will be my trip within China on China Yunnan Airlines.

Its interesting that you pointed out that CZ uses bar codes instead of the magnetic strip on their boarding passes. When I flew MU back in 2001, they used bar codes at Shanghai Hongqiao. I felt the bar codes were low-end technology when I first saw them. However, last year, when I used American's self-service check-in, the boarding passes didn't have magnetic strips. Instead, they used bar codes too. However, they didn't have to rip off a stub, so I found that to be efficient.

Excellent report.

Is the new Hong Kong airport better or worse than Kai Tak?

LPL: Can't really say which airport is better. They both have their good in it. Kai Tak was close to the city while Chek Lap Kok is further away. Kai Tak was of course better for spotting and as a passenger, I like it for the landing at Rwy13. Chek Lap Kok is very spacious and very comfortable. So, it's hard to judge which one is better.

Hey, SOHK.

Just to make it clear that some airports are using bar-code scanning system in Chinese mainland, but the airports in most major cities are using magnetic strip scanning machines.

Carnoc,

So there are cities in Chinese mainland that uses the magnetic strip? It's just that I don't think I've come across them.

SOHK,

In the last few years, I have been given a lot of magnetic strip boarding passes in Beijing Capital Int'l Airport. Meanwhile, I can't really remember (consider the fact that last time I flew from Pudong was several months ago), but I assume that Shanghai Pudong Int'l Airport uses magnetic strip boarding passes as well.

Regards.
