MyTravel A330 LGW-SFB

Thu Mar 20, 2003 11:24 pm

My 3 friends and I arived at LGW on the 1st March at about 0630 for our 0955 flight to Orlando. As soon as we arrived at the check in desk, it was clear that the flight had been delayed for 4 hours!!! (nothing out of the ordinary on MyTravel! hehe!) I have flown with Airtours/MyTravel on 4 holidays (Austria, France, and Florida twice) and ALL of my flights have been delayed. The minimum was 1hr and the max was 5hrs! "oh well" i thought......Gatwick isnt the worst place in the world to be delayed!

After check in we had to kill7 hours (it was still only about 7am at this stage) so we headed off for some shopping and food. To cut a long delay short, i'll skip to boarding time! 2 of my friends were seated in 41a+c and i was seated along side my other friend in 41g+j. As soon as i got on the plane (my first time on an A330) i noticed how clean and well kept it looked. In fact, Mytravel does seem to look after the interiors of their planes, as all of the ones i have travelled on have been imaculate inside. The legroom didnt seem as bad as i was expecting, and the seat width definately wasnt as bad after hearing how cramped 3-3-3 airbuses were! Fortunately we were seated at the back section where the plane narrows to 2-3-2. I had an ailse seat, and the ailse was quite wide at that point, so i kinda had the best of both worlds, as i could see out the window too and wasnt stuck in a middle seat!

Every seat had a PTV (another first for me!) and so i couldnt wait till after takeoff to start playing with it! I was suprised that they didnt show a safety video and instead opted to do a manual demo. It was even quite hard for me to see what they were showing us, and i am just over 6ft!

We didnt have to wait long for take-off, and we were soon lined up on the runway. The fist thing i noticed is how quiet this aircraft is....even on takeoff. This is good for some passengers, but i like my takeoffs noisy! We were off the ground quicker that i expected for a fully loaded A330 heading to Orlando. (i heard the fa mention that there were only 2 spare seats) Due to the delay, the first drink served was free, and all the headphones were free too! It almost made the delay worthwhile!

Before the dinner service commenced, i thought i would take the opportunity to check out and interesting feature of this aircraft.... the downstairs toilets! The stairs were located just in the center of the cbin at the doors behind the wing. the stairs went straight down with a small turn to the left at the bottom.Ithought this was a very good idea, because, if nothing else, it breaks up the boredom of an average air traveller more than just regular toilets. Its a novelty i suppose. I heard several people remark how nice the aircraft was. I have never heard any passengers say that before! Anyway, because the toilets are downstairs, they can be a little bit bigger that if the were on the main deck. this was evident in that there were no annoying sloping walls! Anybody who is tall will know what i mean. If the toilet is located beside the cabin wall, the there is often a big curve in the wall which prevents me from standing up comfortably. There were 5 toilets and 5 seats down here, with a cabin crew member stationed down here at all times. I heard someone remark to her that it was a pity being stuck down there for so many hours. However, the fa just said it wasnt too bad because she got to sit and read magazines for the whole flight! Not a bad job!!!  Smile

The PTV's were also better than i was expecting. there were 3 different movie channels, as well as 4 or 5 channels that showed music, sitcoms, cartoons etc. There was also the usual moving map channel, and my favourite.... 1 channel that showed a forward view from the nose of the aircraft, and one that showed a downwards view from the belly! This was far more than i was expecting from a charter airline! From what i hear about Delta's PTV's, the Mytravel ones sound even better!

Next came the dinner. It was a steak pie with carrots and peas, with crakers and cheese, and some mousse for pudding. The steak pie was lovely, but there was hardly any of it! i stole my friends bread roll in order to try and fill myself up a bit more! Tea, coffee and orange juice were served with the meal.i think a good idea would be to eliminate the 2 small compartments with the crakers and mousse, and make the actuall main course bigger, because it was very nice, but simply too small. but, who am i to tell people how to run an airline?! lol!!

the res of the flight went pretty quickly, without a single bump the whole way across the ocean. Soon enough, it was time for the second meal of the flight, although, this time it was a cold one. To be honest, i cant really remember what we were served, but it quite substantial and included a nice tub of ice-cream...... which was bigger than i thought it would be.

We started our descent soon after. As we were passing through 28,00ft the turbulence started! the seatbelt sign was iluminated, and soon after that, the cabin crew were also asked to return to their seats! we were just getting the usual bumps and shakes, but then we started to get buffeted from the side. we were sitting at the back, so it probably felt worse for us than those in the middle. evey time we would jolt to the side, people would gasp, and some would laugh! It was at this point that i amde my friends close the window blind, because i HATE seeing the wing flexing and bouncing! Of all the things about flying, that is the thing i hate the most! it just send all these sill images running through my head and makes me paranoid! And to make things worse, the A330 wings, although very gracefull looking, did seem to bounce around quite a bit.At least there was no lightning like tha lat time I was landing in the orlando area!

This only lasted for about 15 minutes thankfully, and we were soon on finals for Sanford. I was able to watch the approach and landing from my tv screen, with only occasional glances out the window. The actual touchdown was very smooth, and the reverse thrus was very quiet. Everything about this plane was just so much quieter than i had been expecting!

I would definately fly a MYT A330 again, but i would want to get an aisle seat in the 2-3-2 section, or an exit seat. The only annoying thing is that all the window seats have a box under them for the ptv's and since i am over 6ft, i found this very uncomfortable for the short time i swapped seats with my friend.

I hope this reaort has been ok.... although i aplologise for the spelling and lack of punctuation etc, as i am in a rush! If you have any any more questions about anything, including the return flight, dont hesiatate to ask!

Excellent report!

I've been to LGW 4 times and there's been a delay each time!

Great report. I travelled MAN-SFB last August with a window seat. It was great. I love the different camera shots you can have.

James, As to why a safety demo isn't shown on the PVT's, in the US we have to do a manual demo on PVT aircraft because of the passengers in exit rows and bulkheads would have to have the PVT's extended to watch the video and the FAA does not allow this on taxi, takeoff or landing. I assume this must be the same reason in the UK.

I doubt it, since we were given the demo on the PTV on my LHR-EWR flight with BA.

Nice report.
Did anyone ever flew MyTravel from the UK or Scandinavia to Thailand with a stop in Sharjah? When I was in Sharjah 3 weeks ago (see another trip report) I noticed the pax got a breakfast buffet in the airport (a separated departure lounge), it looked quite good. I wonder if the on board service has been adapted.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

The reason why a manual demo was done is because one of the overhead screens would not have been working.99% of the time at MyTravel we do video demos but if one screen is out then we have to do a manual one.CAA stipulations.
