ORD- LHR On United, In Economy.

Sat Mar 29, 2003 3:49 am

UNited airlines flight 928 with service to LHR from ORD: Boeing 777

Scheduled
Departure 6:00
Arrival 8:45

Actual
Departed 5:54
arrival 8:35

We started off, with a very short line to check in for our 6:00 departure. THe line was very short to check in with less then a ten minute wait, but the security line took about an hour or so to get through. The people that checked us in, were very nice and polite and i didnt have any complaints. boarding started at about 5:30 for this 777 flight to Heathrow.they first started boarding first and business class passengers, through one door, and the economy passengers through another. boarding went smoothly and quickly.my seat was 32 B, with my friend sitting in 32 A. we had an aisle and a window for this 2-5-2 seating on the boeing 777-200.this was a very full flight, with not more then 5 empty seats in economy. We took off on time, and the begining of the flight went smoothly. I was really interested in channel 9 on UA's audio system, and i thought it was really neat. the 777, head PTVS, and a weak selection of movies, atleast for this month. We started off with some beverages and the movies started. Then we had the main meal service with a choice between chicken or pasta. it was served with some salad, fruit, crackers, and a slice of cheese cake. I enjoyed the meal, and thought it was really good. after the main meal serice, they didnt have another beverage service, for probably about 2 hours or so, and after about an hour iw as thirsty, so i rang my call button and waited. THis is my only complaint about the flight, is that i waited for about a half an hour, until i finally walked backed to the galley to ask for a drink. I mean probably 3 or 4 flight attendants walked by but didnt even say anything. with about an hour and half remaining on the flight to heathrow, there was a continental breakfest, with an egg sandwitch thing on a crossaint, with some fruit and orange juice. it was ok. the flight landed about 10 minutes early. I really enjoyed this flight.

United airlines FLight 959 with service to ORD from LHR: Boeing 777

Scheduled
Departure 4:35
Arrival 7:30

Actual
Departed 4:30
arrival 6:50

checking in at LHR for my return flight to Ord, was quick and easy, there was no line, and We just walked straight up to the counter, where we were greated nicely by a UA employee. The securtity line at LHR was very short, and easy. Wehn they finally announced our departure gate, we went there, and we were part of a little group of people that had to go through extra security. boarding started at about 4:00 and it went smoothly. Channel 9, was again very interesting while on the ground at Heathrow. We took off a little early, and everything went smoothly. The movies started duruing the first beverage service, but the movies again werent very good (yes tehre were ptvs again). The main mail had a choice of chicken or pasta, served with some salad, bread and fruit, and with some ice cream. Everything went smoothly from then on, until the light dinner we had about an hour or so out of ord. This was the worst airline meal i have ever had in my life, and i travel a lot and have never had one this bad. it was like a turkey sandwitch with all sorts of junk all over it served with some chips that were horrible and a kit kat bar, i only ate the kit kat. we landed about 40 minutes early. We went through a long line at customs, but we still had to wait about 15 minuytes for our bags, witch seemed to take forever. But overall. it was a good trip! thanks for your time!

Glad to hear you had an ok trip with United. How nice that you actually had chanel 9 on both of your flights working. It seems on 75% of my international flights with United across the Pacific, Chanel 9 is not in operation. I am shocked to hear you had a short line at LHR security. When I was there in Jan of 2002, the wait was horrible, with a bunch of screaming kids all over the place! What a nightmare! Any up coming trips for you in the future?

I was kinda "overwhelmed" by the size of ORD the last time I was there. I looked out the window and just saw hordes of aircraft moving all over the place! I don't envy the air traffic controllers at that airport. Even as i was approaching to land, I saw jets zipping all over the sky! And they were not cruising, but rather climbing away from the aerodrome in all directions. Damn... ORD is truly the busiest airport in the world! Or is it Atlanta now?

Well, lack of service on US carriers are somewhat of a norm so you shouldn't be too disturbed by that call-button incident. However, I would expect something better from United because I have always had a high regard for them together, with AA, on long haul international flights.
Welcome to my starry one world alliance, a team in the sky!

Nice short report, seems you enjoyed the flight, quite a while since I travelled on UA international, enjoyed the flights back then.

Good to hear you had a short security wait @ LHR, makes a change!

Re the call button, it seems they don't work in economy on US & most UK airlines, rather they ignore them!

Rgds
