MAD-MEX, Bad And Good Experience.

Tue Apr 29, 2003 2:08 pm

I just returned from Madrid after a two week visit which was great.

My flight from MEX to MAD was via Chicago on AA and Iberia. The return leg was supposed to be on Wednesday from MAD to MEX via Miami but I changed the flight date and the route. I was told by the person on the phone that I was going to be charged $150 for the change and that I could make the change the same day.
So this is how it started. I went to the AA check in and waited one hour in line. When I got to the counter I was told that I had to go to the Iberia check in to make the change because the flight was operated by Iberia and they couldn´t make the change. So I went to Iberia and the line was not full but it was REALLY slow and I was there for about 50 minutes and I heard over the speaker some one sayin last call for the passengers going to Chicago to check in. I wen running to the counter wher it was announced and I was told that I had to go to AA to do that. I was really angry and started yelling saying that AA told me I had to go to Iberia. They told me to go to Iberias Ticket counter and the lady there said she didn´t have acces to my reservation because it was made throght AA. I asked how that could be if they are in the same alliance and have code share and she replyed "our systems are different" so I was even more angry and she sayd I had to go to AA. So I went back to AA and a nice lady helped me (I had missed my flight because of AA´s and Iberias terrible coordination and service). The lady at AA started to give me options but I had to stay one morwe day in all of them and I coulnd´t stay one more day because I had to go back to work, so I asked if they could change it to AeroMexico´s flight. She sayd that it was possible but I was charged 250 dollars so I was reaaly mad. The service in AeroMexico was excellent (much better than AA and Iberia) so it was worth it. The flight was long (12 hours) but even thogh I left Madrid 2.5 hours after the original flight I arrived at MEX three hours before. I loved AeroMexico, great service. Flight attendants were nice and the flight was good.

What do you think about what happened?

Archie

Archie

if this was trip report writing class, and I was your professor, I would give you a C-, and would handwrite with red ink "please expand and elaborate." Then I would give you another chance and let you turn it in on the next class meeting for a better grade - because I would be a nice professor. Big grin

And if you did as as I said, I would give you a -->  Smile happy face, and change your grade.

It's not like the oneworld alliance just started last week, so I wonder why they still don't have their systems harmonized. This would be one major benefit the customer can reap from the alliance, and as far as I know, Star Alliance is much further and deeper in their integration.

Archie,
I just do not see the point why you decided to travel with AA and IB instead of AM or IB non stop flights... When it comes to long haul flights departing from Mexico I always prefer flying AM (except when it comes to Lan Chile): service is always better. I guess you did it because of FFP.

And as Latin Plane said, you could expand a little more.

LatinPlane,

Sorry about the writing, but I wrote it last night at 12:30am and I was really tired so I guess a C- in those conditions isn`t too bad  Smile/happy/getting dizzy. I just wanted to write my story.

The trip was great and the flight back was great (but a little long). I must say AeroMexico is doing a great job.

I don`t know why Iberia and AA haven`t harmonized their systems, but it stinks and I missed my flight and they didn`t even care.

Archie.

I didn`t go on AM or Iberia`s direct flights because they had no more seats available unless I payed $2500 (and I made the reservation since February). So I guess the "crisis" in aviation is really bad...

Later I will write more about the trip, I`m still too tired after the trip.

Archie.

Their systems will never be harmonized...

AA uses the archaic Sabre system....Iberia uses a much more modern Amadeus version...

Ok.. here goes the whole story...

MEX-ORD April 12th 2003
AA 737-800
Departure time: 10:10am
Arrival Time: 1:50pm

I arrived at Mex airport at around 8:00 am and the check in in AA was not full (as opposed to UAL which had a very very long line).
Check in was pretty fast and I went up to the gates.
We steted boarding about 25 minutes before the departure. Departure was from Rwy 05R. Take of roll was nice, a lot of power on that machine.
About 1 hour into the flight a sandwich was served and a becrage. Headsets were sold for $2 (what a rip off).
We sterted our descent into ORD and landed on time.
Immigration line was short and fast and I had no major problems at ORD.

ORD-MAD
IB A340-300 (Rosalia de Castro)
Departure time: 4:40pm (actual time 5:10pm)
Arrival Time 7:45 (actual 8:10am).

After a couple of hours at ORD, We boarded the Iberia flight about 30 minutes late because the plane was towed to the stand a little late.
Some flight attendants had a face as if they were bored and other had a smile on them. Take off roll was slow and we turned right immidiately after take off (don`t know which Rwy, sorry).
About 1:30 hours into the flight a hot dinner was served. After picking everything up they showed two films and flight attendants disappeard for the rest of the flight. There was group of teenagers sittng close who were probably going ona trip to Spain with their school.
Descent started about 25 minutes before landing and the view of Madrid in the morning light was sectacular. Ijust loved it.
We arrived at MAD and a bus took us to the terminal where we went through immigration and then I picked up my bags and a friend of mine picked me up.

Return Flight:

April 27th 2003. I already told you my story on how I missed my original flight (MAD-ORD-MEX), so I returned on AeroMexico.

Flight AM 002 B767-300 XA-APB
Departure Time: 2:10pm
Arrival time 7:45 pm (actual time 7:35pm)

We started push back a few minutes late and taxying time was a little long but we departed MAD from Rwy 36L. You could see the new building in progress and it looks quite nice. The day was clear so we had some very nice viwes of MAD and the areas around it. 50 minutes into the flight a hot meal was served and a few minutes later the first film was played (same one I saw in Iberia, Two Weeks Notice with Sandra Bulock and Hugh Grant).
After that Flight attendants were walking around to see if we wanted coffe or water. Service was nice, we got the headsets for free. The flight was very long (12 hours) but I enjoyed it. We started our descent into Mexico City for a landing on RWY 23L. The viwes were nice, but no as spectacular as when you land on RWYs 05L/R because you fly over the city.
Immigration was really fast (I am a Mexican citizen so it is very fast) and it took a long time to get my baags. I was received by my family which was nice and I went out into Mexico City`s traffic and snog (I was a little depressed after being in Madrid  Smile/happy/getting dizzy)

I hope you liked my report, and if not too bad.

Regards,

Archie.

Nice trip report!!
You were on the same flight as my mother (AM 002). She told me that the only free seat of all the plane (well at least on Tourist class) was the one next to her (she had very good luck). So it was a full flight.

On the other hand I´m not surprised with IB service, its always bad (correct me if mistaken) One positive thing about IB´s flight to MEX is that since they switched to A340 their on time performance has improved drastically.

Saludos

Aeromexico757,

Gracias. The flight was full, when we landed and left the plane it looked as if a huricane came and destroyed the interior. It was full of trash on the floor.

Marcus,

If you didn´t like it.....tough!!!

Archie

Hi Archie,
I like reading your report, actually I enjoy so much reading reports from my own country.
Some years ago ( ¿1997?) I had to fly American Airlines many times to Nashville via Dallas, cause my company scheduled my trips and it was the cheapest option, but I never liked the service, and I hate that I had to pay for headphones and beers, and they were not very punctual that I lost some flights in Dallas...but fortunately one day, AA employees went to strike, so my company had to choose Continental via Houston, and the service was so different, much better even though they charged the beers too.
I've never fly Iberia but I think that it would be a good experience in the non-stop flight MEX-MAD on board the A340.
Bye.

Hi Ricardomexico,

Thanks for your coment. I did fly Iberia from ORD to MAD on my way there and the plane was nice. I had never benn on the A340 so it was nice to have flown with them. The service in Iberia is not the best, but I was not expecting much since I had heard so many bad stories but I must say it wasn´t as bad as I thought either. The only thing I did realy hate was their lack of organization with AA at MAD.

Bt the way, some ´people say that the A340 doesn´t have much power on take off and it is true. Take off roll was realy long, but I aslo noticed that the take off roll in MAD with the 767 was long and slow. I liked the take off roll on the 737 in MEX, you could realy feel the power. Maybe it depends on every flight. I liked both the A340 and the 767.

Regards,

Archie
