Phoenix Trip: Part One- Long

Wed Jul 16, 2003 5:41 am

We (my family) decided to go to visit some extended family in Scottsdale, Arizona. We were thinking of flying on United from O'Hare to Phoenix, but since it was a last minute trip, we ended up flying from Midway to Phoenix. Please enjoy the report.

3:30 am- Woke up and took a shower. It takes about 45 minutes from where I live to get to MDW. We wanted to be on the road by 4:15. And after some last-minute packing, we were on the road at about 4:25.

5:05 am- We arrived in the long-term parking at MDW, and took the free shuttle bus to the terminal, where we went to fast moving line at the Southwest counter. We checked in fine- and got two tags insted of one. One said "2852 PHX" and the other said "Transfer in MCI". That answered my question on how does WN transfer bags. We had two bags, the first went through the screeners fine, but my mom had some ankle weights in the other bags- which were heavy, and equal weighted tubes, like ammo. After it tested negative, it was cleared and we were on the way to gate F10.

Midway was nice, walking through the A concource going to the F, we passed many diffrent airlines, and walked through what seemed like a long jetway that liked up Concourse F with the terminal.

After bording the A group, they announced the bording of the B group and we got on the plane. It was 1/3 full, so I had my own row, row 13. I took the window seat over the wing. We had to sit at the gate for about eight minutes, because we had borded too early. As we were waiting, a female flight attendent was carrying boxes labled "Air Crisps". We started moving and the other flight attendent (who was male) started talking about the saftey announcements and that for beverage service we could have coffee or orange juice.

The seats were mainly cloth and had leather at the top. They were very comfortable.

The flight attendents came around with beverages and about one hour after taking off (right on time), we landed on-time in Kansas City.

I did not like MCI, because everything was outside security. Even the bathrooms. Also, every gate had it's own security checkpoints. Good thing we landed in Gate 28 and were leaving in Gate 28A.

We taxied out and had to sit on the tarmac for five minutes before take off, but as soon as we took off, we were given 4 cookies and a cup of ice flavored with soda. (a full can) It was a boring flight, about 2:45. But...there was the "pilot trick". The pilots say there is some turbulance ahead so the turn on the seat-belt sign. Everybody sits down, and gets out of the lavatory. The pilots then take turns going to the lavatory, and get back and say there was no turbulance and turn on the seat belt light. And yes, it did happen.

Overall, they were good flights. Look for the flight coming home soon.

Pilot Jason and Josh were playful kids during high school and usually got good excuses to escape class to go to the bathroom.

HEY!!! I love reading your trip reports!

In my opinion, you should have flown out of O'Hare, but I'd take any airline over Southwest Airlines (I hate it). If you read my post, you'll understand. I have a long history for not liking that airline.

Anyways, what did you think of your flight? Honestrly? How did the planes look, smell, were the seats comfortable?

Yes, I've heard bad things about MCI (what's the airport's name, though)? God bless!!!

-Chris

PS: by the way, I subscribed to your mailing and I signed your guest book, and your site is waaaay cool. There was some funny stuff on it.

To answer your questions:

Overall, I was impressed by efforts of all the SWA crew. I really liked my flights. The planes were older, but they were in fine condition. There was a stale air smell, and the seats were really comfortable.

MCI is Kansas City International Airport.

Thanks For Visiting My Site!
