My First 777 Flight!

Mon Aug 18, 2003 12:57 pm

04AUG03
AirTran Flight 744
MCO-ATL
B717-200 / N989AT / Seat 30F
Departure 16:35 (actual 18:55)
Arrival 18:05 (actual 20:20)

Got to the airport a bit late due to me chasing a 3 foot black racer around the house LOL. Proceeded to the AirTran check in counter to see how insanely PACKED it was. Last October when I had flown on them, NOBODY was in line. Only stood in line for 5 or so minutes when an agent asked if I was checking bags, I said no, so he took me over and checked me in right away. Oddly enough he wouldn’t give me a seat since I was on standby….there were still a good 10 seats open on the plane. Went up to security and was asked “Are you flying today”. I paused for a second, I really wanted to say “Hell no, I’m driving!”, but I said yes, and she let me on my way. Went up to the metal detector and was asked to take my sneakers off. I mumbled to the people me hind me “This is so asinine”, they laughed. Jumped on the tram to gates 100-1XX and decided to walk around and see what was there. Went to gate 106 and waited for my plane. 16:00 hours comes up and no plane and no agents. Hmmmm, I decided to call one of my friends with AirTran to see what was up. Turns out the plane was very late and wouldn’t be in till 16:50. Off to the west I could see some nasty T-Storms pushing our way which worried me. 10 minutes later a few agents come to the counter. I went to try and get a seat…..she seemed surprised they didn’t assign me one at the counter, and kindly gave me a window seat, 30F. Boarding commenced at 17:15 RIGHT AS THE STORM HIT. The lightning was bad, and I knew that the ramp would close, sure enough it did. We waited though the storm on board which took a good 75 minutes to pass. Around 18:40 I noticed the wet ramp rats come running out and began to load our plane. We pushed back under our own power finally around 18:55, and preceded to runway 18L! I was surprised because we were already late as it was, why didn’t we just take runway 17 which is right next to the gate!? We were #6 for departure, and finally were airborne around 19:15. We made a right hand turn after departure headed towards Sea World and headed back North towards ATL. 30F has to be one of the worst seats besides 31F (the last row with no window), I had a GOOD view of the engine the whole flight haha. Pretzils and drinks were served as we cruised at FL330 on our 1hr 5 minute flight to ATL which was fairly smooth considering the storms that were over Florida. Decent was smooth and we made a hop, skip, and a jump landing on runway 27L and disembarked at gate C1A I believe. Overall a good flight, my one concern was why did we board when there was a T-Storm in the area? Funny thing is last time to flew AirTran was to ATL, and I got the same a/c as before.

THE DAY I HAVE WAITED FOR!

06AUG03
Delta Flight 1981
ATL-MCO
B777-200 / N863DA / Seat 04J Business Elite
Departure 18:55 (actual 19:11)
Arrival 20:20 (actual 20:39)

WOO HOO! I’ve waited a long time for this day to arrive. My friend Brian Stevenson had to drop me off early for his training class for Delta (never thought I’d seem him working for the widget). I arrived at Ryan’s ATL airport at around 3pm, and proceeded to check in at the kiosks. Well, since this was my first time in Biz Elite, I’d figure I’ll go to the Biz Elite counter and check in there (make me feel somewhat special haha  Big grin ). She said my flight was oversold, and wanted to put me on an earlier flight, but I wouldn’t be in Business or First. Hmmmmmm… NO, why would I do that? She gave me my boarding pass and I proceeded through security without a hitch (always seems less stressful than MCO). I hopped on the tram to concourse E, concourse E. Since I had about 4 hours to kill, I just kept walking up and down the concourse and took some photos at the gates. I decided to get food poisoning at Popeye’s (NEVER GET THE POPCORN SHRIMP). That took a good 5 days for that to clear out of my system. A few friends called me and that killed a good 125 minutes on my cell phone (I feel another $100 bill coming on again). Finally I see a 777 landing in the distance, a new colors one too! I was hoping it would be my a/c and sure enough, it was! My first flight on a Delta new colors jet, and my first time on a 777. I hung out at Brookstone’s across from our gate and sat in a vibrating chair for 10 or so minutes until they began to board Business class and medallion members. I took my seat in 04J and was greeted by an F/A and asked if I would like a drink or needed anything. I opted for the O.J. (although a screw driver didn’t sound too bad at the time haha Big grin ). We pushed back a few minutes late and headed out to runway 27R. We taxied on to the runway and kept a slow roll for a few moments before the pilots gunned the throttle and we roared down the runway. As full as we were the 777 was POWERFUL, I was really surprised. The engines seemed a bit growly and loud, but once we were in the air they quieted down. The view of ATL was impressive, a storm had just passed through and the downtown was visible and the sky was clearing up.

I began to play with my PTV and played Poker and some other games (while playing with the recline in my seat). What really impressed me was the leg room, I couldn’t even reach the seat in front of me. The F/A came around with some snack mix, biscoff cookies and took another drink order from me (this time coke). The one hour flight was not long enough for me to enjoy the perks of Biz Elite and next thing I knew we had begun decent into Orlando. The sunset was incredible, and we made a fast landing on runway 17…we used a lot of runway. After the flight I went into the cockpit and chatted with the pilots for 10 minutes or so. A mx guy came onboard and was checking something out that they had a complaint about. I heard something about the flaps from the first officer (maybe a good idea why we came in a bit fast?). Overall it was a memorable flight; I’ll have to take one across the pond next time!

That was a really really good report.
The Boeing 777-200 is a fun aircraft to fly on.
I remember how cool it was when I flew on one.

Justin,

Nice report. I would have guessed that you've been on the 777 lots of times as much as you fly back and forth between ATL and MCO. Anyway, I'm jealous your first flight was in Bus Elite. Hopefully I'll get to go to FCO this fall in bus elite if my work schedlue clears up a bit!!! I hear DL changed the ATL-FCO flight to triple 7s now.

The shear size and power of the 777 makes it awesome! Not to mention all the other features.

My first 777 flight was on United in June, on this gorgeous bird:

Have flown the 777 several times on both AA and UA! A great plane indeed! It is very impressive the power it has even with a full flight!

Most of mine have been short hops! ORD-DEN and ORD-DFW! I am awaiting the chance to fly one on a long haul!

Rgds,

Greg

Hey Justin,

This is excellent trip report on their trip to ATL and back home to MCO. How is your first experience on the B777 aircraft and but, I still like to flying on the B777 from 3 years ago and those are looking great myself. I had great trip to ATL and back home with my brother. It was very nice with my birthday from last week of Friday Aug 15, 2003. I am 25 years old. Please go to the non-aviation boards for me, please? Thanks!  Smile

Hey Justin! Glad to hear you finally got onto a 777. I know you told me in a reply to a report I typed back in June that you were going to get on one soon and sure enough you did. Your first 777 was the SAME EXACT 777 I flew on the first time too (863DA). Also, how appropriate that your first new colors plane was ironically the first new colors plane in Delta's fleet. Have a great day!

You mentioned you got to have a look up the front, I'm quite surprised they brought back flight deck visits, like the "good old days".

Something which I've never been able to do since Sep11.

Yeah I really haven't had much of a problem after 9-11...only once on USAir. One F/A told me sure go on up, another came up and grabbed me. But these guys were really cool.
