DUS - MXP - ATH - MXP - DUS On Alitalia

Sat Nov 01, 2003 4:26 am

Last month I went to a vacation to Athens. Here is now my trip report:

On September 23 I went to the airport of DUS by train. At around 5 am I arrived at the check-in desk for my Alitalia to Milan. On the check-in desk there was a sign mention check-in for the first Alitalia flight for the day would begin at 5:15 am. So I had to wait another 15 minutes until they finally opened. While checking in they checked my passport as well and I got my boarding passes for the flights to MXP and further to ATH. I had window seats on all my flights. After check in I went to the gate and as I had some time left before boarding I just sat down for watching the airplanes. Boarding time at the gate started 6:35 and at 7 am the plane actually was ready to go when the pilot made an announcement that we will be late for about 30 minutes due to traffic restrictions over Italy. Finally 7:30 am the plane took off in southeastern direction. Short after taking off we were served a breakfast (sandwiches, cake, fruit salad, yoghurt). Everything looked quite good and taste was nice as well. Also we got some refreshments and we could choose between coffee and tea. After almost finishing our meals crew came along again and asked we would like to have another cup of coffee or tea. After about 1 hour and 10 minutes of flying time we arrived at Milan Malpensa airport where I had to change my flight.

After arriving I went to the airport building to look for my flight to Athens. As I had enough time to connect there was no need to hurry. Anyway, in my opinion Milan airport is very nice airport for changing flights as it is very easy to find it's way around.

Boarding for the next flight to ATH began at 9:40 am.

The flight actually should leave MXP at 10:10 am. But unfortunately, while seating already in the plane, pilot announced that the flight would be late again cuz of traffic restrictions over Italy. So we had to wait for one hour on the plane before we finally were be able to leave. I think the mentioned traffic restrictions was true, cuz while boarding at the gate besides us there was boarding a Lufthansa to FRA and a KLM to AMS as well. As both planes were waiting directly beside ours, I could see that they also had to wait. Finally KLM left first than we left and while already taking off I could still see the Lufthansa jet waiting at the gate. Anyway, short after take of we got a warm meal (chicken, potatoes, salad and fruits). After meal we were served with coffee and tea and refreshments. Flying time was about 2 hours and 15 minutes and soon after embarking from the plane we already got our luggage.

My flight back to DUS via MXP took place on Oct. 14, 2003. On that day I went to the airport quite earlier. Actually I was planning to leave on Alitalia at 5:15 pm. But I was thinking of going to try to the airport earlier, so that I could go to MXP early to have a look around at the airport. So after arriving at the airport I went directly to the Alitalia desk for asking an earlier flight would be possible. Luckily there was another flight to MXP at 1:40 pm and as there were free seats enough they changed my ticket without hesitation.

Boarding time for my flight back to MXP began at 1:10 pm and I was be able to make a through-check-in to DUS again.

At around 1.40 pm the flight was ready to leave. As already on the flights to ATH, the plane looked quite clean and the crew gave us a warm "Buon Giorno" again. Flight left 10 minutes late from the gate but arrival time in MXP was on time. Around one hour after leaving ATH we got a warm lunch with potatoes, some vegetables and yoghurt. Of course we also got refreshments and coffee and tea.

After arriving at MXP I went to the departure level from where it is possible to watch the airplanes taking off and landing. I saw an Korean Air Cargo B 747, an Emirates A 330, two Iberia planes and many other European and Alitalia flights.

Finally around 7:30 pm I went to the gate for boarding. While I arrived there I found out, that my plane was late for about 45 minutes. Boarding finally started at 8:30 pm and at 9 pm we were ready to go.

While seating on the plane pilot apologized for delay which occurred cuz of an late incoming plane. Anyway, plane was clean but looked little bit old. Short after take off we got a dinner (sandwiches and yoghurt) served with refreshments, coffee and tea. Around 10:10 pm we arrived safely in DUS airport.

All in all to say I really enjoyed my flights with Alitalia very much and I am looking very forward to my next flight with Alitalia.

Hi KAL744,
I enjoyed reading your AZ experience.
I travelled AZ via MXP some times and I share your opinion, not bad till now.
I´m always interested to the financial part of the trips posted.
AZ is in financial difficulties, growing loss.
Load factor?
What do you spent for your ticket?
Greetings,Markus (FLIEGER67)

Hi, Markus

Flights DUS - MXP and MXP - DUS were booked well, I would say almost full. Flight from MXP to ATH I think was booked about 70% and flight back from MXP to ATH was quite empty, maybe 30 to 40 %.

And I paid € 173,-- + € 84 (TAX) for my return flight.

Best Greetings

Hi Frank,

nice report about your flights to Greece, I enjoyed reading. Approximately two years ago I flew also on AZ from DUS to MXP and back, both flights were fantastic, the service was definitely better than I expected.

I agree with you, MXP is a nice airport, but one thing I didn't understand: The whole airport is a smoking free area, even in the bars you are not allowed to smoke, somehow unbelievable because in Italy is almost everyone a smoker.

Hi KAL744,
Always good to read reports from one of our local airports!

You have compiled a very nice trip report about an airline, which seemignly offers still some service despite all the cutbacks. I certainly would have never believed that AZ offers more than medicore service in Eco. Well, how wrong can you be...  Big grin

I really hope to read another one of your reports when you are travelling again!  Smile

Ciao Sabena, in Italy it's ban to smoke more or less everywhere as in the States. To be honest in the north of Italy the smokers are a large minority, while in the south of Italy as in all the Mediterranean countries the smokers are a lot. Also in this there are many differences between the north and south Italians.. anyway i'm a smoker and i find this obligation good. Smile

Having flown Alitalia last year FCO - CTA - FCO, I was quite impressed with their service. I was really pleasantly suprised to know of their service standards. Well, I enjoyed my flights and glad you enjoyed it too!

Won't mind flying AZ again, pity I don't have the chance to now.
