ARN-FRA-LCA, PFO-FRA-ARN On Lufthansas Airbuses

I always wanted to go to Cyprus but it use to be somewhat expensive from where I live so I always went to other places, a couple of months ago there was some trouble with my connections and I was offered a free flight, only had to pay the taxes, so I decided to finally visit Cyprus. My 43rd country, the 39th in Europe.

I had to wake up so early that I only slept about three hours, took the 0348 bus to the city center and then went on with the airport coaches, I wanted to go with the express train but they don't start the service until a couple of hours later, what a shame. Well at Arlanda only two counter was open and there was huge quos, I stood in line for about a half an hour before it was my turn. It took a while before I was found on the passenger list (e-ticket) but otherwise everything went fine, I asked for window seats on both flights.

We took off a couple of minutes before schedule from runway 01L, the airport was in complete darkness but in a short time we passed the low clouds and I was hit by bright lights and maybe the most beautiful sunrise I have ever seen. The service was great but I was a little bit cramped in my seat (but I‘m 1,93)... we were served the usual breakfast that you get on a LH or an SK flight, a few pieces of bread and some salad and ham to put on, together with a piece of pie and a yogurt. After I finished I tried to read but I fell asleep, only to be waken up a little bit later by a flying pillow into my head, thrown by an F/A ten feet way, nice gesture but I was surprised.

We started descending very early and when we finally got near Frankfurt we had fly around the airport a few times before granting permission to land, I tried to take some pictures during landing but it did not go very well, the sun was so strong I could not look out the window. After landing we taxied around for almost 15 minutes before reaching our final parking spot, many pretty aircrafts at AFB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA as usual. The pax were transported into the terminal by bus, I searched for my flight on the TV screens inside and my deepest fear for today was just verified, my next flight was as far way from me as possible in this place, I started to walk fast towards my destination, right, left, took the stairs a few storied down, then walked through the psychedelic tunnel, up the stairs, left, right, passport control and I got to my gate one minute before boarding began.

The Airbus left the ground ten minutes before scheduled departure time, there were heavy turbulence the first hour or so with many air holes (think it‘s called so, when the aircraft makes sudden dopes). People were screaming, somebody threw up and one person a few rows before me were saying a prayer in German, I just smiled and enjoyed my flight. I had a nice nap between the turbulence and the meal, it took a long while before everybody got their food, especially me who sat in the last row but the waiting was worth it, the food was actually hot, didn‘t expect that on a 3,5 hour flight, especially now when everybody is trying to cut costs ! I got some vegetable-rice mix and pork in a brown sauce together with my second pie for the day and a cold sprite. I was just finished when we were passing by the last mountains before heading out for sea, tremendous views, I really like those small enclosed villages and lakes that are on such high altitude.

We had the island in sight about an hour later, you could actually recognize it immediately by the shape. We flew along the north coast and then made a sudden turn to south, we actually passed just above Larnaca Airport before landing, so close that I could clearly see small details on the runway (read signs for e.g.), then we flew out over the sea and made an extremely sharp left-turn then landed smoothly at 14:28. Don’t know if I’m right but every time I fly on an A321 it feels like the engines are screaming much louder during takeoff and when they are set in reverse after landing than on another aircraft, and I mean much louder !

Cyprus was nice but four days is just enough time to explore it. I waited many hours at Paphos international airport before I could check in, was a little bit to early (maybe 14 hours haha). I sat outside and watched the charter planes make sharp turns above the water and than took a walk around the airport and found a couple of old Royal Air Force planes from the fifties or so.

The check in staff turned up just after midnight, they did not use any computers (couldn't even register my frequent flyer number) and all the boarding cards were pre written by hand except the seat numbers, I was asked where I wanted to sit and said 4F, then she picked up a bunch of stickers and pulled out one of them that said “4F” and put it on my boarding card. Pretty funny experience having in mind that the airport looked brand new (maybe it was just newly renovated).

I hurried in to the departure area, had spent way to much time in the main hall, I was the third person who got there, and every shop was closed they didn’t open until a few hours later. What I did find though was a really nice outdoor terrace with a good overlook of the runway where I later could see a Malev and my Lufthansa flight land.

Boarding took quite some time, the gate agents told us that the plane had to be cleaned, but when we finally got on the plane the pilot came on and told us that the Cypriotic immigration wouldn’t let the plane leave. Wonder who was lying. We finally took off from runway 29 almost 35 minutes late. The captain came on again and talked almost ten minutes about the aircraft, it didn’t seem like anyone was paying attention really. He talked about payload, fuel usage, the engines, the route etc. I thought it was quite interesting. As soon as we reached cruising altitude we were served “breakfast” (though, I certainly think that 4 am is a little bit too early for breakfast), I had the option to chose between pancakes and an omelet, went for the omelet and fell asleep seconds after I finished: About and hour later a flight attendant woke me up and pointed out the window, we were just passing over Istanbul, a city which I under normal circumstances don’t like but the lights were shining beautifully in the dark night. Next thing I knew I fall asleep again and did not wake up until we landed at Frankfurt, what a surprise. 25 minutes late.

Had a pretty long layover at AFB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA but time went by fast, took a long walk around the terminals, made the check in for the last flight (couldn‘t do it at Cyprus) which resulted in me standing in line for almost an hour and then I sat down and wrote the first half of this report. Boarding was delayed five minutes due to something unknown but we took off on time from runway 07 to the east, very nice views of the airport it self, i took a lot of pictures.

We were served the usual snacks and sandwiches, nothing special at all. The whole flight went pretty smoothly with clear weather and very good visibility, I spent the flight updating my website and doing some reading. About a half an hour into the flight we met an SK MD heading the opposite direction, it was flying some 500 meters to the west of us and maybe 300 meters lower, what a beautiful sight it was when it roared pass us, you don’t really see how fast these machines are until you see something like this, absolutely the main event of the day.

We arrived after a flight of 96 minutes, I was in the second last row so it took a while to get off, but I wasn’t really in a hurry. Went to the SAS desk and fixed the EB points they could not do either at Paphos or Frankfurt, then passed customs and went home. Had a great time.

detailed report, thanks for your time to post it.
I think you had a good experience with Lufthansa,this time, isn´t it?
Interesting that you fly the TÜBINGEN plane, I´m often there in Tübingen.
You payed only tax, good deal.
What about the load factor on your flights, did LH do profits with it?

Hello Markus

Nowdays it seems like every flight with LH is a good experience at least from my point of view. Delays are rare, and if there are you get compensated, the service is excellent, the crew is very nice, friendly and professional and there is food served on the flights (with real metal utensils by the way not just that plastic stuff). Not the mention that the prices are very compatible. I think that it's all these small factors that makes you feel comfortable.

When it comes to load factors both flights between Cyprus and Frankfurt were completely full, and on the ARN-flights there were only a few empty seats (2-3). I guess Lufthansa simply is a good carrier that have in some way managed to stay out of larger trouble these difficult days. Although there have been lot of criticism against LH here in A.net (that I don't understand) I like them and I will certainly fly with them again.

An enjoyable trip report.
I have flown LH several times mainly within Europe so I could really imagine your flights as if I had taken them.
I really love their in-flight shopping catalogue. They have some really cool LH/Star Alliance branded items from suitcases to model aircraft.

I was on D-AIPS a few months ago when I flew MUC-FRA and was seated just one row in front of the seat that you took  Smile

Yes I like those stuff to, think I'm going to buy an LH watch next time I travel those are really cool.

Thanx for informing me on that one, I was trying to figure out that for a while now. I tried to remember the city name but forgot it just after I got off the plane, didn't even have time to write it down  Smile
