I arrived at LAX about one and a half hours prior to departure. The International Terminal was crowded. Lines were long for the check-in counters and the TSA x-ray machines. After my bag was cleared by the TSA, I proceeded to the EVA Air Evergreen Deluxe counter. The line was already gone, and I was checked-in. The agent gave me my boarding pass and an invitation to the Evergreen Lounge. She also priority checked my luggage to Taipei.
I proceeded to the stores to buy some See's Candies. Afterwards, I entered the security checkpoint. The agents checked my boarding pass, but did not prompt for valid government-issued photo identification. Security was very smooth. Besides a few EVA Air flight attendants ahead of me, the line was virtually empty.
After security, I took the elevator to the fifth floor, where the Evergreen Lounge is located. When I entered the lounge, the greeter was serving some passengers, so I just found a seat and sat down. When I went to grab food, the greeter asked for my invitation. She told me I was actually supposed to go to the Air Pacific lounge since there were too many EVA Air lounge users. However, she told me it was alright to stay in the Evergreen Lounge. The lounge was fairly simple. There were sandwiches, cup noodles, snacks, and a variety of hot and cold drinks. Boarding was called in the lounge at about 3 PM.
Boarding at the gate was called by row number from Super First Class to Super Business Class to Evergreen Deluxe to Economy Class. Once on board, the flight attendants showed me the direction to my seat. A blanket and a pillow had been placed on my seat. The overnight kit (toothbrush, toothpaste, lotion) and menu were placed on my arm rest.
The Boeing 747-400 was configured with 368 seats in four classes, including 104 Evergreen Deluxe seats at a 37"/38" pitch. The Evergreen Deluxe Class seats span from the first to the third emergency exit situated over the wing. Seats were arranged 2-4-2 abreast, compared with the usual Economy 3-4-3. Each Evergreen Deluxe seat was equipped with a PTV. Sadly, these are the same Evergreen Deluxe seats from the past 10+ years.
Once we pushed back from the gate, the safety demonstration video was played. Warm, wet towels were passed out. We taxied for a while and waited for take-off. When we were taking-off, I could see at least four United aircraft on hold. Once we were in the air, immigration forms and SARS survey forms were passed out. Shortly afterwards, the flight attendants served peanuts with a cold beverage. About one and an half hours after take-off, we were served dinner.

I chose the Beef Stew. It came with a warm roll and our choice of beverage, including red and white wines. The meal was quite good, and it came in a newly-designed lime-green tray with new china. The old trays were dark green and used for many years. The new trays and china look refreshing and soothing. When we were nearly finished, the flight attendants passed out the ice cream bar and served hot tea and coffee.
After dinner, the window shades were closed. The flight attendants came around selling duty-free items. The lights were dimmed, and we began our long journey across the Pacific Ocean. The PTVs were a great help. I watched movies, including Confidence, the Medallion, and Seabiscuit. Airshow was on Channel 9. This aircraft had the newer Airshow compared with the older one on other 747-400s.
Every hour or so, the flight attendants came around with drinks. Also, drinks and crackers were available in the galley. So, every once in a while, I would end up grabbing a drink with some crackers. About eight hours into the flight, the flight attendants came out with a cart full with drinks and cup noodles (seafood and beef flavors). The cart was the same one used to serve Super First Class passengers. The snack was delicious. About half an hour later, I asked the flight attendants for another cup of noodles. They smiled and quickly made me another cup.
About 2 hours and 30 minutes prior to landing, we were served a hot refreshment.

I chose the Stir Fried Chicken. Again, the meal came with a warm roll and our choice of beverage. Hot tea and coffee were served as well. I was too tired to enjoy this meal. I tried staying awake the entire flight so I could adjust jetlag. After dinner, the lights were dimmed. When we began our descent, the window shades were opened, and the flight attendants passed out candies.
Our flight arrived almost half an hour behind schedule. Immigration was smooth, although the line was long. My baggage was already waiting on the conveyor belt.
This was another great experience with EVA Air. However, I still hope to see improvements in their lounges, on-time performance, inflight entertainment, and seats.
