SNN-LHR-MEX On EI And BA

Mon Jan 12, 2004 4:40 am

Last december I flew home from Ireland. I arrived at SNNat 6:00 for my 7:40 flight to LHR and then MEX. I was very nervous upon arriving at the airport because we were three unacompined minors. Everything went fine, we weren't asked anything about that. Shannon airport is a small-medium sized airport with some shops, but they were all closed to to the early hour. The departure lounge was old. We board Aer Lingus flight 372 operated on a A320 (very nice!). Once on the aircraft the captain announces that their is fog over Heathrow, delaying our flight until 8:30. We taxi to runway 32 and take of towards LHR. There is an overcast of all of Ireland that clears up until we get to central England. On approach in London I get a get a great sight of the landmarks, the London eye, county hall, etc.

We arrive at terminal 1 at Heathrow, and go to the flight connections centre. We change our boarding passes so that we all fly together at a BA counter were a very kind gentleman pulls a miracle and puts us together (making callings, etc). We take the bus to terminal 4, going through an impressive underground tunnel under a runway. We have a great time at the duty free shops in Terminal 4.

At 1200 we board BA243 along with hundreds of people. We are some of the first people to board. In take my seat (49K) and wait for about 40 mins for the 744 to start moving. This is my first time on a 747, I had gotten there on a Iberia A343 which I disliked. We final take off towards MEX!

It is a 10-11 hr journey to MEX, I get confortable in my seat. I watch Charlies Angeles Full Throttle on my PTV. Lunch is then being served, Chicken Curry, which is the absolute best meal I've ever had on an airplane (sorry I didn't take a picture  Sad). Most of the F/As were Mexican, so I felt as if I were on board an Aeromexico flight. After many hours inflight we fly over Chicago and the great lakes area. I am able to spot what is left of Meigs Filed and the sears tower because its a clear day. After a while me move to Texas, where I am also able to spot Corpus Christi as we fly along the Gulf of Mexico. We then fly over the Rio Grande Valley, over Harlingen. We make our way soth to Mexico City. We start to desend over the Mexican skies. We get a very panoramic approach over Mexico City, being able to spot the main avenues and landmarks.

We finally land in MEX runway 5R and I get a glimpse of a new Aeromexico 73G at the maintence hangar. We have a smooth landing. We wait for about ten minutes for our gates to clear out. The 744 parks between gates 31 and 32 using both the jetways. We disemark and walk all the way to gate 19 where inmigartion is. There is a long line for foreigners but the mexican citizen one is almost empty. I hand my departure form to personel and am told to go, I get through without even showing my passport. The caroussels area is crowded, but we are able to get our bags. We get a green light at customs and go through to the arrivals area. It is crowded, but we spot our family. We walk towards the parking lot, going through the an area in remodelacion. We finally get on the beltway.

Hope you enjoy it!  Smile

Great report. I find it a bit strange that you overflew Chicago? Couldn't you go direct across the atlantic to Mexico City?, it would save some time.

The service between SNN and LHR has normal, we got served only got served something to drink.Surprisingly my friends couldn't use there game boys, because according to the F/A there could be an interferance with the A320. The F/A were very friendly (and good looking  Smile). Next wendsday I am going back to Ireland, hope the cold isn't too bad.
The world is thiner closer to the poles do that makes the distance shorter (I think thats why!)

Hi, Acho:

I enjoyed reading your report. I was in Mexico (Orizaba) with work two years ago, my only time in your country, and I enjoyed my visit a lot. I flew DUB-JFK with Aer Lingus and JFK-MEX with AeroMexico.

Here in Ireland it's not too cold (6 degrees C) with lots of wind and rain  Sad

Thanks for your reply. Well at least you actually got something to drink. Since December 28 you have to pay for everything on Aer Lingus. Have never understood the no gameboys rule either (a lot like the no CD player rule on any Irish regged aircraft).

BTW Acho, if you don't mind me asking. Would you happen to be going to school in Clonmel?

If any of you are ever down in Cork, drop me a line.
