My co-worker picked me up at 5:30 for our 6:30 departure. I live a short 7 min drive to the airport so we had plenty of time. I called Delta’s automated flight departure information and found that flight 1006 was scheduled to depart on-time. We parked in Long Term A and rode the crowded bus to terminal 2. With great surprise we found the terminal to be less than busy and we quickly checked in at the kiosk and waltzed through security. After a grande chai from Starbucks, we headed to C10 to find that our flight was delayed. (too bad the automated system wasn’t notified…lol) Apparently our captain came down with the flu overnight and Delta was frantically searching for a replacement 737 captain. Our re-scheduled departure of 7:10 came and went without any sign of a replacement and by 7:40 everyone on board was getting restless. The Co-pilot announced that our captain had indeed showed up at the airport, but had forgotten to bring his ID and thus could not make it through security or fly our plane.
By this time most people had gotten off the plane and were re-booked through ATL, or on the next 757 to CVG. The helpful agent suggested that we stay on the 738 as even if it was another hour delayed, we’d still make the 3:25 to PIT and avoid a completely full 757. Also to our surprise, our replacement captain showed up a few minutes sooner than expected and we re-boarded to depart for CVG. With less than 30 people on board, this 738 would be a nice comfortable ride to CVG. We pushed back at 8:30 and taxied to de-ice behind what was probably the 8:25 757 to CVG.
After de-ice we made the long taxi over to 34L and the lightly loaded 738 blasted into the sky above the thick fog covering Salt Lake City. The snow covered Wasatch Range stood majestically above the fog. We climbed north and then west over Park City where it looked like a gorgeous day for skiing. Delta of course offered the movie “Run Away Jury” gratis and served lots of what they had on board, which was only Biscoff cookies and soda. With the light load we actually had OK service from the flight attendants. It was a nice change.
Our flight took us east to Denver, on to St Louis, then towards Cincitucky as one DL agent calls it. I like the moving map “Delta Compass” that is on the monitors. Unlike some systems which are only updated every 15 seconds or so, Delta Compass seems to be updated real time. Changes in pitch or speed are instantly noted on the screen. We flew just north of Louisville then made a left turn to line up with I think 36L. We landed at 1:40pm, two full hours late.

We had a little extra time in CVG as we had to wait for the next bank of flights and our flight to PIT. We headed over to Comair Land and the little pub there next to the gates and had ourselves a pretty good time…lol Before we knew it, it was time to head to gate 52 for the flight outta there.
Well the one good thing about this flight was that they booked us in Y class, which is 1.5x medallion qualification miles lol. I was sad that I wasn’t going to be able to fly on the 328 and on ACA. Plus I was really late getting to the store I was going to visit, so I felt stupid. We boarded the extremely full CRJ and pushed back right on time for the short hop to PIT. Our FA brought around water and snacks and before we knew it, we were descending from our low cruise altitude of 22,000 feet. The way in was beautiful over the snow dusted hills of Pittsburgh and we landed right on time. We taxied around the entire airport, getting a nice view of a US A330-300 on the way in.
Overall an uneventful flight. And sad that we got there so late. Anyway I’ll post the return flight this weekend, when I actually return from Pittsburgh.
