My friend and I arrived at Fiumicino Airport a little after 7:00am and checked in for our flight back to New York. Check in was quick and smooth and we headed to Autogrill for a last cornetto and cappuccino before going to the gate. Our flight was departing from C22, in the satellite terminal. At our gate was our Swiss A319, parked next to a just arrived US Airways A330 from PHL, a departing CO 767-200 to Newark, two Delta 767-300's, one to ATL and one to JFK, a MEA A321, and a Swiss Avro RJ. Also departing our terminal was an AZ flight to Moscow.
I looked out the window and saw parked AZ A321's, El Al 737-700, and parked in a row were the CX A340, SQ 777, Thai 747-300, and Malaysia 777.
Boarding was quick. The flight was 1/3 full. Taxi to the runway was very quick and we were airborne at 9:58am. We turned right and over the sea and into the clouds, north for our 52 minute flight to Zurich.
Zurich weather was cloudy, rainy, and cold. We flew past Zurich and over Bern and came in to land. Taxied past Sri Lankan A330, Swiss A330, and other A320/A319's parked at Pier E. Took our gate and deplaned shortly thereafter. We then transited to the A gates (to A81) for our LX 16 flight to New York, JFK, aboard the A340-300. We went through the new security procedures and boarding began shortly after for the 12:30 departure. We were parked next to a company A340. Not sure where it was headed.
Boarding completed early, but we had a problem with a cargo pallette so were delayed at the gate until 12:51 but the pilot told us we would still be on time, thanks to favorable winds. Taxi to runway and at 1:10 after an endless take off roll that is customary of the A340, were were wheels up and off to JFK.
The flight was smooth. The cabin smelled new. Nice plane. Excellent service and the Swiss Entertainment system blows the competition out of the water. Much better than VS (my industry standard). Flight arrived four minutes early. Taxied past El Al 747-400 and 777, and parked alongside a company A330 from GVA.
