1 Day Trip SAO-RIO By GOL, 2 Flights, 3 Airports

Mon Mar 01, 2004 10:55 am

It is allways nice to live new experiences during your flights, yesterday was one of them, for some reasons:
- I tried a new airline: GOL
- I did my first flight inside Brazil: Sao Paulo - Rio - Sao Paulo
- First time in 3 airports: Cogonhas in Sao Paulo, Santos Dumont and Galeao in Rio de Janeiro.

Everything began last thursday, when I did a quick research in internet to know the price for a flight from Sao Paulo to Rio, the best deal was with GOL, a low cost Brazilian Airline. It was about 120 USD per person, taxes included, so I decided to invite my parents for a one day trip to Rio. (They came from Mexico to visit me since I am living for some months in Sao Paulo). It was a surprise for them, since I did not tell anything to them until we were in Cogonhas to take the flight to Rio, and it was almost their last day in Brazil before going back to Mexico. It was also going to be my first time in Rio.

Date: Sat 28 FEB 2004
Flight: 1634
Depart Congonhas Sao Paulo at 7:43
Arrive Santos Dumont at 8:47
Aircraft B737-7
Registratio: GOJ

The check-in process was quite fast and no wait time, nobody in the line. Gol has its own waiting lounge in Congonhas. Gol did not manage paper tickets, and the boarding passes are a verey common receipt, just like the one you get in any store. We were asking to board the plane on time. Currently Conhongas does not have any bridge to board the planes directly, so we had to walk to the plane (no buses neither). The flight attendants are very young, the youngest people I have ever seen on any airline (25 years old?) and they dress an orange polo shirt and black pant. Anyway the age of the flight attendats is not important, since you expect a good service and preparation to deal any contingency in a right way. They were very friendly and with a genuine smile that make you feel confortable. The plane only has coach class and we had row seats 13A, 13B, and 13D, GOL has no superstitions  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
During the flight we were served a drink and a snack (two packets of crackets inside a nice orange box). F.A. invites you to read their in-flight magazine but the flight was so short that i did not have time to read it but I keep it.
Since it was my first time in Rio, I was waiting to experience the amaizing landing I have red in many articles, and it is really amaizing, what gorgeous view from the airplane, even that I did not had the window seat I was able to take a look, wonderful experience...but the best was when the aircraft touches the runway, wow...then the pilot have to use the breaks very strong to stopp the aircraft before the runway finishes, it is when you know why you have to fasten your seat belt when landing  Smile

Flight 9714
Depart Galeao Rio de janeiro at 21:30
Arrive Congonhas Sao Paulo at 22:30
Aircraft: B737-7
Registration: GOO

Not many different from the previous flight, once again the flight departed and arrived on time, but now from the Rio International airport (Galeao). Galeao Airport looks very empty, not too much activity in the night. I was able to see some AA planes there, and was surprised that there is flight from Angola (Air Angola?)
This time I was waiting for the landing in Congonhas, since the planes pass over the appartments where I live. Once again the pilot have to use the brakes strongly when landing in Congonhas. This time I noticed they are building a new passenger terminal and I think it will have bridges to board planes directly.

Finally, I have to say, that I enjoyed this flights with Gol, and I am ready to experience this again, but now at least a full week-end in Rio.
