Well, I thought I'd write a quick trip report on my first two flights ever, when I was 9 years old.
We were booked outbound on East-West Airlines flight 551, in late May 1985 for a trip to Noosa. As Noosa had no airport, we'd fly to Maroochydore and then have a 30 minute bus trip into Noosa.
What I remember specifically is that the flight ticket was cardboard, had the green and gold (the Australian national colours) East-West logo, and our "boarding passes" were yellow stickers with the seat numbers on them. Myself and Mum were in 13A and 13B and my Dad and brother were in 14A and 14B. The baggage claim tags were also bright yellow.
Our aircraft was Fokker F28-4000, VH
Walking out to the aircraft, we were almost blown back to the terminal, the wind was so strong. We boarded via the stairs in the back of the door, common to the F28.
We sat down and taxiied out - I could hear the just hear the safety demonstration but couldn't see it as the seats were too high for me to see past them. The reason I couldn't hear it well is because we were down the back near the engines and they were quite noisy!
Suddenly, we began to take off. I was thrown back in my seat (I'd been leaning forward looking out the window) and the acceleration was so strong that I couldn't pull myself forward until we were well into the air - though I tried!
The Safety Card was very interesting (I wish I took one!), and the inflight meal is not really memorable. They did have bright yellow napkins with green "East-West Airlines" written on them, a plastic cup for coffee, a plastic stirrer... I do remember how loud the engines were - we were sitting right next to them!
In complete contrast to the East-West colours of green and gold, the flight attendants (two from memory) were decked out in a deep maroon uniform.
Our landing was all over the place - we were banking right, then banking left, then banking right again. I didn't like that! I do remember not feeling the touchdown at all - it was feather light - impressive considering our aerobatics just before. The only reason I knew we'd touched down was because all the spoilers popped out of the wings - that was very cool - the F28 has quite a lot of them for such a short wing!
A week later, we returned, again on VH
-EWD, this time on flight 564. Again another fun flight, but this time we were in 13DE (myself and Mum) and 14DE (brother and Father). The seat allocation stickers were maroon this time (so too the baggage claim tags) - the only thing I saw that matched the F/A uniforms!
The aircraft I think only had 14 or 15 rows, and there were 2 seats on the left (facing forward) and three on the right.
It was all very exciting, and to this day I remember my first flight with fondness and quite well. All of the above information is from my head - I just can't forget it!
