I arrived at YVR
Domestic terminal around 21:45 for my flight to YYC
. Air Canada sent me a text message to my cell phone advising my flight was delayed until 23:20. I received this message at 19:10. I really enjoy this service provided by AC
. I did not have to rush to the airport.
There was a long line up at the AC
check in counters. However all 15 or so self check-in machines were empty. Check in approximately one and a half minutes using the self check-in machine. I was able to select seat 32K. No bags to check, so I was on my way.
I headed to Security and paid my $10.00 Airport Improvement Fee. One slight change to the Domestic Side is a sports bar has replaced “Cheers” with a White Spot in it. Generally the food at “Cheers” was pretty bad. The line up for security was short. I brought my laptop with me, and it was never swabbed for explosives, which I thought, was odd. Every other time it had been. After security I proceeded to gate C37 and was able to get a window seat in the gate area.
Apparently TELUS has wireless Internet at YVR
. It costs $8.00 for 1 hour of use. So I paid the pretty high fee and connected to their network. The speed was ok, but my connection dropped a few times. I think $8.00 is a little much for 1 hour of Internet use.
Boarding was to commence at 22:45. At 22:45 an announcement was made that because of connecting passengers from an overseas flight, our flight would be delayed until those passengers arrived.
The Pre-Boarding announcement was made at 22:55, and at around 23:00 general boarding commenced. I found myself to my seat 32K a window. In Executive First, the seats were the normal frothy green. However in Economy the seats were dark blue with red woven thread. The seat cushion itself was actually dark green, and featured the new AC
seat fabric. It looked rather bad, however with their current situation how could you complain? I asked the F/A for the FIN however she did not know. I believe this aircraft might have been one of the two ex Canadian a/c that came from Spainair?
Finally the connecting passengers from HNL
were all on board. The Captain came on the PA and said “Sorry for the delay, however at Air Canada we will delay any flight for as long as it takes to accommodate other passengers.” I thought that comment wasn’t the proper thing to say. I think he basically just told us that our time isn’t as important as the connecting passengers time. I didn’t mind waiting; as if I was the HNL
passenger I wouldn’t want to overnight in YVR
. They had such a long trip as it is. One family was coming from SYD
and missed their connection in HNL
, so they had to overnight in HNL
. I’m glad they finally got on the flight.
We pushed back, and taxied out to 08R and took off. It was rather choppy on our climb. Seat belt sign came off and the in-flight service started. We were served one small bag of some sort of gourmet snack mix. And I was offered the WHOLE can of coke. They also showed the CBC daily news from Thursday (our flight was Friday night). Also the French Business Report was played. I wish that they would find something else to play than outdated news. We started our decent into Calgary, which was very turbulent. The seat belt sign was on, and there was a man and woman laying on each other over a row of seats. The F/A’s never asked them to sit up. I thought that was odd. We landed in Calgary at 2:08AM in the morning. I told one of the F/A’s the airline’s color choice for the seats was stylish. She looked at me confused and I reminded her about the Blue Red and Green seats, and she laughed. I was only kidding.
