The Trip From HE-Double-Hockey-Stick...MSY-?-LGA

Thu Jun 03, 2004 12:17 pm

6/1, I was originally booked on UA flight 5752 (operated by AWAC CRJ), leaving MSY at 7:45 AM, and arriving at IAD at 11:28 AM, connecting to UA flight 7462 (operated by an ACA CRJ), leaving IAD at 12:10 AM and arriving at LGA at 1:30 PM...little did I know what would happen when I put in for a 5 AM wake-up call with the Hampton Inn-Elmwood Park-New Orleans...

Next thing I knew from watching Sportscenter at 12 AM, it's 7:37 AM according to my watch, and my hotel was about 15 minutes from the airport...I quickly picked up my room phone to call United, and there is no dial tone...I went to the front desk, and asked about my phone not working, and found out that their phone system was down...quickly, the Hampton Inn was on the phone with United, rebooking me on the 10:25 flight out of New Orleans, connecting through CLT on US 844, and getting to LGA at 4:08 on US 1008, at a price to the Hampton Inn of 149 dollars and (don't forget this) one cent...

I rode to the airport, and I see the line for the US Airways ticket counter stretching longer than I can ever remember seeing a line for US Airways...I then went to the check-in kiosk, and was greeted with the message "your departing flight has been delayed, and you will miss your connecting flight. No boarding pass has been issued." Back on the phone, this time with US Airways...they kept me on 844, and connected me to flight 568, getting into LGA at 6:12 (in optimal weather)...Done, I was checked in, and proceeded to the gate...(the flight was delayed because the inbound flight from LGA was diverted to CLT because of an aircraft failure...better for it to be diverted to CLT than to divert itself into the Mississippi River, killing a good many people onboard the Airbus A-319)...

I got to CLT OK, and then boarded the A-321 that was to take us to LGA, and found out that there was a ground stop in place until 4:40 PM, then 5:30 PM, then 6:30 PM...fortunately, we got one of the first takeoff slots, and were in LGA at was about time...

I'm a little were you watching Sportscenter at 12 AM when your watch said 7:37 AM? And how did this prompt you to call UA?

Also, the Hampton Inn paid for the change on UA?

I fell asleep watching SportsCenter at 12 AM, and next thing I knew, I woke up with my watch saying 7:37 AM...and I was prompted to call United by the fact that I had a 7:45 AM flight, and I knew when I got up that I would miss it...and yes, the Hampton Inn paid for the changes, as it was their fault that the phone system was down...

This is why whenever I am staying at a hotel, I also put the clockradio on instead of just relying on the hotel. So far this year that has saved my bacon twice when the LAX Mariott and LGA Wyndam Garden neglected to call me.
