VIE -> SYD -> MEL -> VIE (Lauda, Virginblue)

Thu Jun 10, 2004 1:55 pm

Going on a phototrip to Australia we are flying with Lauda Air to SYD today (June 10th). We went to the airport yesterday evening with our luggage to use the pre-evening check in. Everything went smooth and we got our seats (17A, 17B) that we had reserved upon booking the flight on the internet. Even our ladders where in the booking so it was no problem to check them in. Lets hope our flight is as smooth as everything else so far. I will post more about it when we are back home and when the pics are online.

As our flight was cancelled we had to rebook to SYD via BKK on OS and TG. Although there was a lot of angry people on the airport the agents have been very friendly and helpful and nthe rebooking went relatively fast. So lets see what this trip will bring us.

First Flight OS025 VIE --> BKK

Thu Jul 01, 2004 12:29 am

Hi all!
Now that the pics are online hers my trip report.
We arrived at the airport on June 10th around 8 o'clock and had some beers with some friends (Just to sleep better on the flight). We had seats 28A and 28 B on this bird (OE-LAE)

We left tha gate on time and taxied for Rwy 29 for immediate takeoff. After a left turn to the east we crossed the hungarian border and shortly afterwards dinner was served (Chicken or beef what else).
The flight was packed full. After havin 2 more beers I fell asleep. Legroom on NG is really disappointig by the way. Our flight path was a preatty straight line from VIE to BKK. Over the caspian sea the sun came out and i woke up to take a few pics.

Somewhere over india we had moderate turbulences and very high clouds. We where flying @ 11.000 meters and the top of the clouds was higher than we have been.

2 hours prior to landing @ BKK another meal was served. The service was friendly and good. Beverages for free and as much juice, water or whatever as you liked. Leaving the plane at BKK at a outside position was disapointing. Very hot and humid and waiting for the bus for about 10 minutes wasnt fun after this long flight.
Summary: Except the legroom the flight was OK. Private screens on every seat with films and videogames make the flight a bit shorter.

Second Flight: TG991 BKK -> SYD

Thu Jul 01, 2004 12:40 am

Our bird was this one (HS-TGK) pictured here in New Zealand upon departure back to SYD and BKK the same day we flew on it

Seats where 49 J and 49 K. The flight fas about 60 percent loaded. The FA's tried to put those people who where seated on the third seat in the rows to other free seats and so we had plenty of room for us.

We left the gate on time and taxied towards the runway. And i thought, wow that was fast. But then we entered a holding position for about 10 minutes. The captain told us we had to do so to keep separation to the BA flight which left BKK towards SYD shortly before us. As i was sitting there and watching out of the window i suddenly saw 2 dogs running across the taxiway and under the wing of our aircraft. Otherwise i enjoyed the view across the BKK apron.

our flight path led us straight down to OZ. Service on TG was outstanding good. Drinks as much as you wanted and you even didnt have to ask for it. as soon as the glass was empty it was filled up again. Good night.  Laugh out loud
We arrived @ SYD on time.
Our luggage was on the plane also but our ladders have got lost. But to our surprise the came to SYD the same day in the evening on the OS flight. So everything was fine.
This flight tought me one thing. If I should ever have the chance to use a Thai flight again i will do so!!!!!!
Speaking of SYD here are two shots from there

isnt she cuuuuuute

to put it short it was an uneventful flight and pretty OK.
What was amazing to us was tzhe fact that you had more legroom on a Low Cost carrier than we had on Lauda Air long haul aircraft.

4th Flight OS008 MEL -> SIN -> VIE

Thu Jul 01, 2004 12:55 am

our flight was delayed 24 hours @ MEL. This plane:

had a problem with the brakes. The parts had to be flown in from Seattle and London and the mechanic from Vienna (crazy isnt it). Our sources at OS told us afterwards that this particular defect was the first one ever to happen on any 777. The additional night we spent in the Melbourne Hilton hotel. OS payed for the stay, dinner, breakfast and lunch. Nice hotel this was. THX OS  Wink/being sarcastic
On check in we couldnt trust our eyes because the people where standing in line across the whole departure level at the airport. Luckily we have been there in time so that we had only to wait for 1.5 hours until we reached the counter. The check in was awfully slow and very disappointing to say the least.
Boarding started 20 minutes late. when we entered the plane i had the chance to get a shot of the seat where i would have liked to sit for the next 22 hours:

and from the cabin where we had to spend this time

flight path again was a straight line SYD -> SIN and then SIN -> VIE except the area around the Irak where we did a slight curve to stay in Iranian Airspace. Melas where again chicken or beef, chicken sandwich and a very nice breakfast.
the flight was packed until the last place aexcept Business class (around 80 %).

.
On our descent into Vienna i had the chance to take a nice shot which clearly shows the size of the GE-90 engines:

.
I enjoed all films the where playing on this flight (again personal screens for everyone) and the videogames.
A nice flight again except the delay and the disappoining leg room.
I hope the reports where interesting.

Indeed interesting ! First time I read a Lauda report and from what I can tell they seem to be a nice airline. I like the interior, especially in Amadeus class.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
How are their prices? Principally on Europe-Asia routes. Comparable?

I am hopefully going to Australia within a year too. Remarkable country !

Great photos as well, especially the one with the sunrise on OS025. Beautiful. And yes, the koala is adorable!

Thanks,

Marcus

Very interesting report, I too could not believe that my Virgin Blue flight had better leg room than the Lauda B777. They really need to do something about that seat pitch!
