Northwest To DCA Part I

I arrived at CWA at about 9:45 to check in only to find a long line at the Northwest Airlink ticket counter. The flight to DTW had been delayed so the ticket agents were rebooking passengers who would be missing their connections. I took this time to go to the electronic kiosk to check in. The flight was quite full so I kept my seat. For my connecting flight (NW 1270, A320) I choose seat 5A, the bulkhead window seat. I then made my way to the magazine store and waiting area. At about 10:20, Northwest called our flight to proceed through the security checkpoint. As usual, security at CWA was swift and efficient. At 10:45 the boarding procedure began. I was surprised to see that Northwest now pre-boards passengers sitting in the emergency exit rows. As I boarded the plane, I noticed this was one of the newer crag with the new style PSU and overhead bins. The aircraft was spotless and smelled of fresh new leather. Prior to pushback, the safety briefing began. On the new CRJs, this is handled by a pre-recorded voice with the F/A only doing the demonstrations. At 11:10, we were airborne. Because of the short duration of the flights, the F/A did not serve drinks, but gave everyone a bag of pretzels. I took this time to take a quick nap before landing. Very shortly after, we began our decent into the Twin Cities. The CRJ touched down at 12:00 on runway 30R. We taxied to gate A3.

After deplaning, I made my way to the new monorail on the C concourse to take me to my gate, C4. Once there, the gate agent made an announcement that the flight is oversold and they will need volunteers for rescheduling. I went to the agent and got myself on the list. Afterwards, I went to Maui Tacos for a quick lunch before the flight. Later on, they began to board the flight. With the last few passengers waiting in the gate area, the agent called my name. When I approached, she said that I would be taking the 3:22 flight. In addition, she gave me a $300 flight coupon and a first class upgrade. I was quite excited about this. After the flight departed, I made my way to the observation deck to do a little reading and listen to my iPod. At 2:30, I made my way to gate G10. The A320 (N306US) had just arrived from PHX and was in the process of deplaning. There were tons of UMs on that flight, apparently for a tennis camp. At 2:55 the boarding began for the emergency exit passengers and any passengers needing extra time. Shortly there after, first class was called to board. The gate agent scanned my boarding pass and I made my way down the jetway. After getting into my seat the F/A came by and asked me if I would like a drink before departure. I asked for a ginger ale with a lime. At 3:20 the aircraft pushed back. At this time, the safety procedure began. About 10 minutes later, we were lined up for take off on runway 30L. The take off was one of the smoothest I have ever had. We flew north over downtown Minneapolis before turning east. About 20 minutes later, the drink service began. There were no meals on this flight, but they did seem to have a vast wine selection. The flight went very fast, with a flying time of just over 2 hours. The captain came on the PA and explained the security at DCA and that all passengers must remained seated for the last 30 minutes of the flight or they would have to divert the aircraft to the nearest airfield. Our decent began at the 30 minute mark. It was a smooth and fast decent. Finally, DC came into view with Pentagon City to the right of the aircraft. Then I noticed the airport. At the last minute, the pilot banked the plane to the right for a perfect touchdown on runway 15. It was a two minute taxi to gate 4 before deplaning. With no luggage checked, I made my way to the Metro station for a ride to my hotel.

Nice report. But I think that the pilot lined up with runway 19.

No food at all in first class on a 2+ hour flight? Geez, NW is really making cuts!

The flight left MSP at 3:20pm, so that probably explains the lack of lunch or dinner (right in between), although it is odd that they didn't serve a small sandwich or some other type of appetizer, especially because due to the time change, that flight arrives rather late in the day.

That was a terrific report. I can't waite to read about your return trip. You were lucky to be able to get upgraded on the MSP-DCA flight. Maybe you will get just as lucky on your return flights.

Good trip report and make sure you will remain in the seated for 30 mins rules after takeoff & landing, too.

Does this rule just apply to DCA because of all the government buildings around so they dont want any people moving about hte cabin incase they had bad intentions?
