US Airways/Express: SYR-DCA-TPA

Sun Jul 11, 2004 8:17 am

Feb/7/03 OUTBOND:I was leaving on the US Airways Express flight 3962 out of gate 6 to DCA. Check-in wasn't bad at all, which is usual at SYR. I waited an hour and boarded the smaller Dash-8-300. The plane was clean. It was as full as it could get! We took off ontime. There wasn't much of a view because I sat in the window seat right next to the overhead prop engine. I got a better view after the wheels retracted. The FA's were very nice. the snacks were bad. Only preztels and soda. When we were approaching DCA we flew over a harbor with a bunch of ships in the water. You should have seen all the US Airways Express airplanes at gate 35-A!!! I only saw Dash-8's, no CRJ's. The bus took us over to the doors. I went innto the terminal and got a bite to eat. There was no where to sit so I had to stand. I went to my next departure gate. I found out that my flight to TPA was going to be late because of the weather it was flying in at the time. It so happens that it was devirted to Syracuse!! LOL!! In about 2 hours the 737-400 in OLD US AIR COLORS came to the gate. Boarding flight 465 was really slow. I got the window seat over the wing of course. We taxied out about 20 minutes later. I was surprised at the amount of force my body received when the engines went to full throttle! I was still used to the Dash-8. If you ever get the chance to take off from DCA southbound you should! I saw the whitehouse and the pentagon, it was really cool!!The aircraft was very clean and wasn't showing any signs of againg like some 727's I've been on. The snacks were the lowsy usual. Just preztels and soda. The flight went by quick, oh and the man sittinng next to me fell asleep on me! I moved over some and his head fell in-between myself and the seat. He woke up screaming! It was funny. We were approaching Tampa in the late sunset. The pilot touched down really hard on the left main landing gear. It was very cool to see all the hydrolics and mechanics when the spoilers deployed. We taxied over to gate F-83. On the way over I saw United 753's,couple AA 738's, aswell as Continental Connection Beech 1900's. I found out from the pilot that the plane was almost 20 years old. I really like Tampa Airport. Feb/14/03 RETURN: I was leaving at 10:42 on US Airways flight 1464 out of gate F-82. The plane was a sharp looking A320, especially as the morning light was shinning on the fuselage. I boarded fast. The plane was clean and good looking. We taxied out. There was drop down screens that showed the safety instructions. We took off right after a Delta 737-200. After take off, we flew to the West coast of Florida. I saw beautiful views of light blue waters.(Gulf of Mexico) Snacks were the same. Flight was quick. We landed in PHL on time.I saw the very modern cockpit. After we arrived at the gate I had to walk half way around the airport to get to my next departure gate. I waited 2 hours. I went to see what other airplanes I could see, I only saw an A330. My plane arrived, it was an A319. Boarding was very very slow. The A319 was clean and had nice interior. It had drop down screens like the A320 that showed the saftey instructions. The flight wasn't even an hour. Arrival in Syracuse was gloomy and cloudy. There were NO other planes when we arrived. Overall my flights were good as well as my vacation. I will probably fly Delta or jetBlue next time for my Florida vacations. Aircraft I flew on this trip: Dash-8-300/Boeing 737-400/Airbus A320/Airbus A319

Thanks for sharing your report. That would be a good view flying out of DCA, I haven't flown there since I was a kid and I think we flew in at night. Anyway, were the old US Air colors the silver birds? I think those looked better than the black/dark blue US AIRWAYS scheme they have now.

Yes. The plane was in old silver US Air colors. I like the new livery and the old livery both.

Nice report. May I make a suggestion though? Break up your report into paragraphs, it makes it far easier to read. DCA sure is a great airport isn't it?

Are you sure it was a Dash 8-300? Thats news to me if there are 50 seat Dash 8's flying to SYR from DCA. As far as I know they are used almost exclusively in and out of CLT. Did you get an N-number?

It's more likely you were on an Allegheney Dash 8-100 with 37 seats. That one has the five seats across in the back.

DCA only gets Dash 8-100 and 200s. You took off northbound from runway 1 if you saw White House and Pentagon. United doesn't have 757-300  Smile

There wasn't much of a view because I sat in the window seat right next to the overhead prop engine.

As I remember from my recent Dash-8 torture, there is no window that has a view of anything but the overhead engine. It runs nearly the entire length of the fuselage, at least back to the end of the pax cabin, if I remember correctly.

(can you tell how I really feel about the Dash-8??  Angry )
