Delta 1071
June 26, 2004
Providence, Rhode Island-Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson, Georgia
McDonnell Douglas MD-88

We parked our Bimmer out in the long term lot and took a nice ride into the terminal. We walked up to the Delta ticket counter, only to find that DontEverLeaveTheAirport lost our FF reward reservation! after half an hour on the phone with Delta Direct, we got seats, but split up 35E/36CD. Security went very smoothly. We then sat at the Sam Adams Pub, and I took some photos, which I may get on Airliners.net. We headed over to the gate, boarding went smoothly. We sat with a spectacular view of an engine! This was going to be fun (not). The safety demonstration was totally half-hearted. We had an excellent and smooth takeoff, just noisy as hell. There was only a little bit of turbulence as we cruised our way to America's Riviera. Meal service was a bag of mini pretzels. Yay. Approach and landing were very well excecuted. THe pilot (which had a unibrow) did an excellent job. The cabin crew were mediocre. Here we were in Delta City, with a 6 hour layover. We ate at chili's, did some shopping, and finally settled at the gate, with 2 hours 'till departure.

So, we were reading when this woman comes up to us dressed in this pink poncho thing, looks like she's on drugs and has 2 trash bags for luggage, and asks if she's at the right gate. My dad and I look at the tickets, and see a routing of CAK-CVG-RSW. We had no idea how the hell she got to Atlanta. So then she goes and bothers this non-rev pilot. She then leaves to the smoking lounge. Then she returns, asking for nail polish remover (she wasn't wearing any nail polish), money for coffee, and a phone. CONVERSATION:

Woman: where is there a phone?
Pilot: There are pay phones right behind you.
Woman: i don't have any money.
Pilot: Then call collect.
Woman: I don't know how to do that.
(Pilot walks away)

My dad let's the woman use his cell phone, and she calls 14 times, before a flight attendent shows up and lets her use her phone. She tried another 16 times on her phone. We got to talking with this flight attendent, turns out her name is Margeret and she's based in SLC. She was extremely nice, and visited us again on the plane. We finally boarded, and found out that somehow the druggie woman was on a $900 full-fare Y ticket. Service was another bag of pretzels. The 757 was in horrible condition. The safety video went something like this:

Welcome aboard Delt(blackout) Welcome aboard Delta Air Lines (static) we will now begin to show you some of the safe(static) and so on. Another excellent flight crew and an excellent cabin crew. We picked up our bags from the baggage office (they made it on an earlier flight) and headed out to Avis, where we got a Chevy TrailBlazer LS. we had a fantastic time in Florida.

We arrived at 4:30AM to a slowly filling RSW. We managed curbside check-in, and headed straight to security. Security was less than efficient this time. We boarded fairly quickly, and settled in to this 757, in much better shape. The flight crew was again excellent, as was the cabin crew. Takeoff was smooth and quiet. Meal service was 2 Biscoff cookies, which are good, but not enough. We landed in an already bustling Hartsfield for an hour connection to B23.

Boarding was smooth and efficient. We were back in row 36 again, with the engine view, but had the row for the 3 of us. Flight crew was again excellent. Flight was very smooth, and the plane was in good shape. Another half-hearted safety demonstration. We got 2 more Biscoffs. Bags were picked up from a chaotic baggage claim area, and we got the Bimmer back.

All in all these were good flights if your looking for a high speed bus to America's Riviera. If you want fine food and service, this is not a choice for you. If you actually want breakfast, this is not a good choice. If you want brand new planes with the latest high-tech IFE, Delta will disapoint. For what it is, Delta is not bad. For what it could be, Delta is a pathetic excuse for an airline.
