CO LGA-IAH-LGA

Wed Jul 28, 2004 3:35 am

Okay here is a short version of my trip report for going to the all-star game in Houston; I'd write more but i'm crunched for time at the moment-- enjoy!!

Wednesday, July 7th
Continental Flight 733
LGA-IAH
B737-800
Scheduled departure time: 8:00 am
Actual departure time: 8:15 am
Scheduled arrival time: 10:46 am
Actual arrival time: 10:46 am
Departure gate: A3 (LGA)
Arrival gate: C29 (IAH)
Seat 24F

Flight was lightly loaded (maybe 50% LF) so myself and my two co-workers spread out across an entire row, 24 ABCDEF, so I got 3 seats all to myself  Smile We pushed back ontime and after the safety video was played we circled some taxiways before taking off ahead of a bunch of other planes that had joined a very long developing line (i wondered why we got priority over the other jets).. anyhow, we took off towards the east directly above Shea Stadium and made the turn to head towards the southwest, in the direction of Jersey and Philadelphia. The 4 f/a's got up to begin breakfast service and I was shocked that CO still serves you a meal in coach (corn flakes and a bananna). Granted it isn't what it once was and has been pared back to bare bones but its certainly enough to tide you over for the 3 hour and 12 minute flight to Houston. Two seperate drink services were offered, one prior to breakfast and one directly after; I thought this was a nice touch. After the meal the movie began; I opted to continue to listen to my own music as I always do. About 1 hour prior to touchdown we encountered some decent turbulence and had to switch altitudes a couple of times. After that the f/a's came around offering water. Soon after we touched down in Houston where we had a short taxi to our gate. Houston's airport is quite large and a decent portion of it is looking very aged these days. However, the new "E" terminal, where my return flight would depart from, is a beautiful new terminal.

Wednesday, July 14th
Continental Flight 632
IAH-LGA
B737-500
Scheduled departure time: 3:30 pm
Actual departure time: 6:36 pm
Scheduled arrival time: 8:46 pm
Actual arrival time: 10:30 pm
Departure gate: E19 (IAH)
Arrival gate: A7 (LGA)
Seat 5D

All of my co-workers were booked on an earlier LGA flight; so I waited standby for departure after departure as they left full- I was booked on a 5:50 departure out of IAH; finally I managed to get confirmed on a 3:30 departure so that was good; problem was weather delays in the NY area caused a lengthy delay. Continental has this horrid tactic where they will take a 3:30 departure and post a scheduled departure time of 3:31, but they will actually mean that at 3:31 they will "update the information"-- meaning that people sit right near the gate and wait, and wait, and wait.... i personally think it would be better if they just gave the information about delays straight up instead of dragging it out like that. About 5:45 we boarded the little 737; this would be my longest (3 hours and 10 minutes) 737-500 flight; every single one of the 104 seats was filled. Not as new looking as the 738 from the trip down but nevertheless a relatively new-looking aircraft. The flight was uneventful; same service as the way down except that we got dinner... a hot Jennie-O pulled turkey sandwich that didn't taste too bad though it looked disgusting along with carrots, and two drink services. Again, the f/a's offered water prior to initial descent, which was slightly bumpier than normal due to the lingering storms around NYC that day.

Excellent job, overall, for Continental. I like Delta and have flown the majority of my flights this past year on DL, but on this trip CO showed me why they are a cut above the rest. Delays aside they do seem to try and go the extra mile for their customers.
Go Blue!!
