Direction North:STR-HAM-STR On Eurowings And LH

Thu Jul 29, 2004 6:19 am

The trip: Hamburg is a high interesting destination to me and my family since I read a book with my son about germanys largest harbour and germanys largest

I´ve booked this flight online direct at LHs website 7 weeks ago, searched a bit to find the lowest fare and payed 91,42 EURO per adult and 74,42 EURO for my son (age 5). Funny, they announced several times, sorry no child discount at this fare, but i´ve payed a discounted fare.
Arrived at STR by car at 09.30, parked at P2 as usual and joined the queue at LH Check-In in Terminal 1, the older part of STR airport. Some 5 minutes to wait there, checked in by a female LH agent, no emotions, like a robot. I presented my Miles and More Card with my ETIX details and she asked me if I use an ETIX, what else?.
We travelled with my sons City-Scooter as hand luggage, I think so, but at security they send me back to check in, the scooter is to handle as bulky luggage, this little scooter?.
OK,back to LH Check In, directly to the supervisor, no time to wait and this time a very friendly female agent. She welcomed me: No problem, bulky luggage is one of my favourite jobs. Thats what I call friendly, thank you!.
Straight back through security where my wife and my son waited and to Gate 161 to wait for our flight.
A Eurowings BAE arrived, it was the only visible Eurowings plane and it was an old fellow D-AHOI. I fly this plane on a STR-AMS flight operated by Eurowings on behalf of KLM 3 years ago.
Bus boarding this time in a heavy rain shower. Ontime departure in western direction. A rather long takeoff run and, amazing, a sharp right turn shortly after takeoff, flown over the terminal building. Later the pilot announced a thunderstorm near the airport in departure direction, this was the case to the unusual departure. 2 female FAs on board, friendly. The AC was clean but if you check some details the age is visible, for example seat numbers, windows and so on. Smooth flight. Only one free drink service. A short announcement from the flight deck about the flight route, wheater and so on. Most of the pax were private weekend travellers.
Flight route:STR-AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA-HAJ-HAM.
Sunny wheater at HAM at arrival. A finger gate, unusual IMO for this small plane and a really long way to go to the baggage are.
3 nights ahead at the SOFITEL/DORINT Am Alten Wall, a newly build design oriented hotel, price per day BB 3 persons: 118.--EURO, booked by Avigo, the REWE-Touristik online portal. Directly at a small water called "fleet", not far from the next "Hochbahn" train station and the main shopping area reachable by feet and a quiet location, do you want more?
4 days to visit Hamburgs main sights and do some shopping, highly recommendable.

We reached HAM airport by taxi at roundabout 4 pm, LH flights were handled at T4, no queue at check in. We gone directly to a female check in agent, very friendly this time, I asked if the scooter was handled as bulky luggage, she dont know it and asked another agent. Conclusion: bulky luggage.
She send us with a smile on our way to A38:Dont go to late, its a rather long way to go. We spent half an hour at the viewers terrace, 2 Pulkovo TU 154s, Iran Air A310 and lots of LH,HF and other usual german planes.
Again no waiting time at security. The AC arrived 10 minutes late and turn around time seems no longer than 30 minutes, LoCo style. Rushhour at HAM, lots of planes on departure this time. Boarded the plane by a finger gate, "greeted" by a female FA at the front door, without any emotions. 3 female FA´s this time, the one in the back was much friendlyer than the others. The plane was one of the NonHub planes, that means refurbished with the new fabric seats and with less legroom, it looks like clean, but also for example the windows show me the real age of the AC. Quick departure, only one drink service, nothing on offer to eat.
Flight route: HAM-HAJ-AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA-STR. Nearly 100 % business travellers this time.
Nice wheater to fly, only some white clouds, good views along the route. One short announcement from the flight deck with wheater informations from STR and a planned ontime arrival. Descent from western direction over the "Weidacher Höhe". The plane jumps up and down, IMO unusual for this good wheater, but later I feel it was windy, that was the answer.
A very heavy, late touchdown and full brakes to stop the AC. Seconds thereafter the pilot was on the intercom: "Ja, liebe Gäste, wer das Fliegen erfand, hat das Landen nicht bedacht, willkommen am Boden.
Translation: Yes, dear passengers. The inventor of flying thinked only about flying, but never about landing, welcome on the ground.
Laughing in the plane. A quick taxi to a finger gate, and, unusual, the front passengers deboarded by the finger, the rear passengers by stairs and bus.
The bags circling as we are in the arrivals hall and seconds later we are on our way to my car. We crossed the runway by the Leinfelden tunnel to do some late shopping and until we parked there at the shopping center I saw our plane departing again, very fast turnaround.

Conclusion: There are 3 competitors on this route: Germania Express with 2 flights weekdays with a fix price system, 88 Euros oneway, without a child discount. DBA with AFAIK 3 weekday flights, also more expensive than LH and
LH on the way to a low cost carrier!!
This time it was the cheapest opinion with the best connections, ontime flights, no specials, OK LH.

Comments, questions and critics always welcome,

Hi Markus,

thanks a lot for posting this report, it seems like LH's "non-hub" 733s have become quite popular among the a.net trip report writers during the last few weeks - still I haven't flown on one yet, so I can't say much about it. But with LH being the "low cost carrier" on STR-HAM, I might try them as well, but wait, maybe better on a route like STR-MLA or something like that.
By the way, Gexx offers STR-HAM for 55EUR one-way for the next few weeks.

Nice report, I enjoyed reading.

This is the perfect registration for a flight to HAM, isn't it?  Big grin

Ndebele:Thanx again. Not always, but this time LH was the cheapest opinion. I´ve booked a one way HAM-STR yesterday for early september, LH = 330.-- EUR, the Gexx flight is to late, DBA = 70.-- Euros, this time booked DBA!
STR-MLA, very interesting, tell us your story after you´ve done it.
Patrick:Thanx again, exactly what I thinked as I read the registration.

Hi Markus!

Let me thank you for putting all that effort into a trip report covering a seemingly very standard domestic flight! I think reports like this are really the bread and butter of this forum, because they do not describe any outrageous occurences, but rather the kind of service one can expect on an everday flight. If I would have never flown LH domestically, I would now know precisely what would happen on my flight thanks to your detailed narration.  Big thumbs up

Seems like D-AHOI is a regular visitor to STR, I had the very same aircraft on my DUS-STR segment in early July. This was BTW my first flight on a domestic EW service for a year, it seems like they have finally lowered themselves to Lufthansa's minuscule service levels concernig onboard catering. One used to get at least a croissant or a bagel on a domestic EW flight, now it is down to drink service only.

Ah well, the joys of a monopoly...  Angry

Thanks for the trip report, especially for mentioning the model train. In fact, I went there once - on Saturdays someone operates this thing (at least when I was there in 2000). You know, when you hear model trains, you might think "boring", but this piece is awesome. Hope you and your son liked it.  Big thumbs up

I am really so, so excited that you mentioned this little detail because I can so relate to this.  Smile Oh well, I better stop eating raw sugar. Now, it's lunch time anyway ... ah, what do we have today ... yes, Backerbsensuppe and Puten - Cordon Bleu. Mahlzeit!

Great Trip report.

In fact the the registration D-AHOI is somehow linked to Hamburg, as it orignaly was a part of Hamburg Airlines' fleet. I guess Mr.Block choose that reg with intention.

Thanx all for your comments,
TriStar500:It´s my aim to write a report about all my leisure, not business, trips, exciting or not. Service: In fact downgrading is the way for LH and their partners, unfortunately, on the way to a LoCo airline!
Beowulf:It was great, if you ever been at HAM, do it again!
ClipperNo1:Hamburg Airlines + D-AHOI = suitable!
Now thinking about to write my next report from my PRG trip I arrived 3 hours ago.
Regards,Markus (FLIEGER67)
