Westjetting To YUL And Back (w/ Photos)

Wed Aug 18, 2004 5:59 am

August 13th
Westjet flt. 608
approx.Takeoff- 9:42 (RWY 33L)
approx.Landing- 10:35

I arrived at YYZs T2 around 8:15am. The check in for the YYZ-YOW/YUL flights is where the AC rapidair stuff used to be. The signs are very good and easy to spot. At the begining of the check in hall you have normal Westjet flights, then Westjet YOW/YUL flight, followed by some shops, then AC Transboarder, and at the far end you have the UA desks. It's really the most boring terminal of the airport with nothing but A319/320/321s and 737s. Maybe the odd 767.

I saw the self check machines and decided to give them a try. All you need is your booking reference or credit card used to book the ticket. I chose seat 8F and dropped my bag off with the agent. Security at YYZ T2 was not busy especially on the far side near the Westjet counters. We would be boarding out of gate 227. The flight was YQT-YYZ-YUL, and the plane had not arrived in from ThunderBay yet so we were forced to wait, but it was worth it. You will see why soon. Finally the plane arrived and most of the pax scuttled off to the baggage claim. The 2 WS gate staff annouced we will be flying on the plane with LiveTV. Big grin Big grin I was very excited to see it. (see photo). After talking to the gate people we finally got called for boarding. From my seat I could see a Yellow Jazz B146 at 229 and the "Symphony of the Voices" Air Canada A320 flagjet (C-FFWN)(see photo). It is painted with a Canadian flag and the MapleLeaf is made of up the names of AC employees.

. We took off from 33L after a CanJet 732 going to Moncton or Halifax. Our crusing altitude was FL390 as indicated on the PTVs. It is really a nice thing to have onboard even for such a short flight. We had 19 channels of LiveTV and 1 of the LiveMap with airspeed, alt and placement. The time went fast and the views were great (see photo). Desent was boring as nothing was visable. We hit the runway in YUL at about 10:25am, the weather was VERY foggy and I did not see anything until we got down to about 500ft. Landing was good with full flaps, brakes and speedbrake. The reverse thrust gave us a nice washing and the runway a drying since the water was flying everywhere. A quick taxi to gate 41. Bags came off in about 10 minutes and I was out of the airport quicky.

August 15
Westjet flt 764
Approx takeoff- 6:50pm
Approx landing 7:50pm

I arrived at YUL at 5:15pm. The place was a mess. AC,LH,OS,CSA,AT,Thomas Cook(delayed till 1am with lots of pax checking in at 5pm). I walked around the airport to have a look at the airlines visiting today and then proceded to the Westjet checkin. I tried the new BP printing machine. I didn't like it too much. The BPs were printed on what looked like thermal fax paper like you got from the old 90s fax machines. Very thing and flimsy. I was GIVEN seat 14F. I got into the long line for WS. 3-4 counters were open and 1 long line for all of them. I gave in my bag and asked if the guy could find me a better window seat a little better since this one was close to the exit row and would not recline well. He gave me 22F which was about 3 rows from the back and gave a nice view of the wing. I had checked earlier and the ADMTL and Westjet sites said this flight was boarding of of gate 36, yet the BP said 41. Even the departure screens said 36. 3 against 1. Boarding was to start at 6:00p. I went off to the shops in search of a nice drink before my flight. I saw the security line was getting big. The one I was in for for AC flights to Canada and INTL destinations as well as gates 33-46 on the aeroquay. The line slowly moved with pax piling up behind me. Finally I got through and went down the stairs to where the moving sidewalk was. As I got on I remember I wanted to go to the AC gate area to take a shot of the AC heavies. Aww too late now. Finally immerging at the aeroquay I went to gate 36 knowing thats where we will board since 3 sources said gate 36. Pax were paged about the gate change and were told to go to 36. No plane yet so I went off to photograph the heavies. An LH 763 on gate 37 and a KLM 747 on gate 33. Both very nice aircraft. In between gate 33 and 37 you could see planes taxiing off to RWY 24L and 24R. The LX A330 going to ZRH went by followed by the AF A343. (see photo). We waited and waited and no WS planes had landed. Finally I checked the screens and saw Westjet 764 to Toronto, Winnipeg. TARD/DELAY till 18:30. More time to walk around the domestic part of the aeroquay in search of planes I dont see in YYZ. Not many interesting planes visable from the domestic side except for the KLM and the LH plane. Just 2 Jetsgos, some Jazz Dash8s and an Air Creebec taxiing away for departure to Roberval. The Creebec plane was rotating within 5 minutes of me seeing it taxiing away from the aeroquay. Thats what I call a TURBO prop. :p 18:20 came around and still not Westjet plane. Finally I heard "He's coming around the corner" and there was our plane. Pax quickly deplaned and luggage was unloaded and taken away to the carosel. At 18:35 we finally were able to board. No LiveTV plane this time, just a regular Westjet 737-700. This was WS's newest plane, and it showed. I put my large camera gear bag under the seat and waited. It was very warm in the aircraft and I remarked to an FA to get the engines started so we could get the air going. Pushback at 18:45 and we were off to RWY 24R. As we taxiied the FO said the plane was delayed due to some kind of problem in YEG, where it started off which caused all planes to be grounded for a while. We held short of the runway for some landing planes. I soon saw a large plane coming toward the runway. The red cheatline gave it away, it was a Royal Air Maroc 763. It landed and I caught it's tail. (see photo), next was a Comair CRJ (see photo). We finally turned onto the runway and full power was applied. Off we went. We climbed to FL280. Our course took us out over Ottawa, then Simcoe and down into Toronto. Seatbelt signs off signaled the start of the drink and snack service. Cookies or "Sunny Snack" mix of pretzels and chips. This flight had cans of drinks unlike the last which just had coffee and juice boxes. I had the whole row to myself. In 22A and C were 2 crew members of another airline, which I talked to for most of the flight. I had a nice view of the wing on the right side. The time went fast while I was into my conversation with the other crew. Desent was annouced into the YYZ area and seatbeat signs went on. We flew over lots of farm land and then I saw the airport which was given away by the New Terminal 1. We flew over the airport and then quickly turned for an approch to 06L. Landing was smooth with nice braking and reverse. Taxi was quick and we waited for another WS 737 to vacate our gate. Off to the almost empty baggage claim hall where the bags emerged. Mine was one of the first ones off. An end to a great trip to YUL. I'm sure I'll be there in another few months. I'm off to YVR soon.

Hope you liked the report. I'll upload the photos to a server soon and put them here.

Hi there!

Great report and good to know that West Jet has PTV's, as, Lord willing I'll be flying the 24th of Dec from YVR to Winnipeg with them, after arriving from BCN and FRA!

Thanks for these great photos. I'm looking forward to do my first report on the Dec trip.

Not EVERY plane has them. Only 1 so far. I think another 1 or 2 are getting the PTVs done next week. They say by middle of next year all the planes will have the PTVs. Except for the 737-200s which are used mainly out Westjet. They are being phased out. You'll probably get a 737-700. They all have leather seats and very good seat pitch. Enjoy Westjet!

Unfortunatley the pictures aren't coming up for me, but thanks for the trip report nonetheless. I have been on a few WS flights and whenever they are early, the flight attendants joke "our early arrival is solely due to the hard work of your cabin crew"  Smile/happy/getting dizzy At least on my flights WS seems to be able to make up time enroute for mechanical delays. Out east we are lucky to get nothing but 737-700s...there haven't been any -200s here for quite some time. I was lucky enough to have one -700 last year that had less than 20 hours of revenue service with WS...smelled nice for a change  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

However, I wonder if WS is really in the YYZ-YOW-YUL triangle to stay. Although they offer a superior product, it is getting hard to match the frequencies of Jetsgo which is more important to business travellers - WS would really strengthen their position in these routes if they had a better FF program IMHO. Plus the fact is that seat comfort and IFE (both big plus for WS) aren't as important on these short routes - which JetsGo operates with more well-suited aircraft.

YYZ-YUL was about 80% load and YUL-YYZ was about 95% load.
