Quick Trip To AZO 8/31-9/3 Non-Rev On DL

Fri Sep 03, 2004 9:59 pm

This trip was totally spur of the moment, I was online and my friend, Dan, in Kalamazoo who I hadn't talked to in a couple of years IM'd me and told me I needed to come visit. I joked with him that all I had to do was hop on a plane, then he told me he was serious so I called the DL employee travel line to check on flight loads. For some reason the system couldn't list me on the flight so I had to call DL Reservations to list on DL 6069.

I woke up my b/f and told him that I needed to be dropped off at the airport. He looked at me like I was crazy but he was half asleep so I forgave him.  Smile

I used the self check in kiosk and my seat request printed out after I navigated the many menus (I love the kiosks, it's so much easier than waiting in line). Security in CVG is normally a pain in the butt, but the gods must have been with me because I was through in 10 minutes.

This was the first time I'd been to Concourse A since Concourse B was built and I have to say that I like the remodel. There were none of the displays that show if you've been cleared on the flight in Concourse A so I checked in at the gate and received my boarding pass from the friendly gate agent. I was surprised to see that Comair handles the gate and ramp operations for ACA in CVG.

Boarding was fast because the flight was only half full and I made my way down to the aircraft. I've never flown in a 328 so I was interested in what the flight would be like. Marilyn, the flight attendant, greeted every passenger at the door and warned us to watch our heads because of the low ceiling. The 328 seemed to have more headroom than the CRJ's that I normally fly and I like the 1-2 setup of the seats because you're not stuck sitting next to someone if you're flying alone. I made my way down the aisle to my seat 8A. The seats are all leather and the comfort is comparable to the CRJ.

After the last passenger had boarded and before we were pushed back from the gate Marilyn visited the passenger in seat 9A, the exit row, and briefed him on the operation of the emergency exit and told him that if he had any questions after reading the briefing card to let her know. We pushed back early and quickly made our way to the runway where we were number 1 for take off.

Take off was quick and soon after we crossed the Ohio River Marilyn began the inflight service. Drinks and snacks were offered and I was amazed when I asked for a Coke and she gave me the whole can. About 20 minutes before our initial descent into AZO Marilyn came around with hot towels for all the passengers (something I'm only used to in First Class on mainline DL). We landed about 10 minutes early and I grabbed my carry on and headed to meet my friend.

I'm not going to bore you with details about my time in Kalamazoo, but I had a great time (from what I can remember).  Wow!

I didn't sleep at all because of the early flight time and I arrived at Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport about an hour before departure. Checked in and got my seat request, then went outside to have a final cigarette and to say goodbye to Dan. There is only one security checkpoint at AZO and I went through it quickly and walked the few feet to the gate. The agent called me up about 5 minutes before boarding to give me my boarding pass.

Boarding was quick and painless and we again were number one for departure. I didn't catch the name of our flight attendant because I was exhausted and reading a newspaper. The inflight service was the same as the trip up but no hot towels.  Sad

We landed about 10 minutes early and then had to wait about 5 minutes before we were able to pull into the gate because the rampers weren't ready for us. Deplaned and headed into Concourse A. The airport was fairly busy for 7am which surprised me but as I usually fly during the afternoon it could be normal. Went to arrivals and took a shuttle home because I didn't want to wake my b/f.

Overall I was impressed by ACA, especially Marilyn, and I wouldn't hesitate to fly them again. They definitely exceeded my expectations. I had a great time catching up with my friends and it was much needed vacations.

Thank you. I haven't traveled as much lately as I'd like to, but I do have some trips planned for the near future and I'll report on those.
