VS Premium Economy LHR->SFO, B744 + Lots Of Pix

Sat Oct 16, 2004 4:49 am

Aircraft Registration: G-VROC
Aircraft Type:B747-41R
From:London Heathrow
To:San Francisco
Date:18th July 2004

Well, here i was again, attempting to fly standby to LAX. However me and my two friends, James Rowson and Dale Coleman had been rejected from the previous days flights because they were full. We decided in the end to fly to SFO then get to LAX from there. I originally thought, hey, SFO to LAX its only what? a 4hr drive. Its nothing... Wasnt till I was 8hrs into the flight that the Purser onboard informed me that it was nearer to 6 or 7hours drive.

Oh well, on with the report It started on saturday the 17th...

After shooting some average heathrow traffic we then went down to see if we got on the flight VS07 which was a no... we then waited to see if we had gotten on the later flight... VS023 this again was a no.

James was tired

Dale didnt have time to be tired, all these BA 744's were too good to pass up!

So after wandering around for an hour or so trying other airlines we then went back home slightly dismayed but hopefull about sunday.

I expected to get booted from todays flights as well so we decided that our best chance would be to fly to San Francisco as there were seats available on this flight. The check in took forever and a day to complete and we ended up running to the gate making the flight late (Completly NOT our fault) and unfortunatly because of a mix up myself and james had been upgraded to Premium Economy but Dale was stuck back in economy but unfortunatly no more seats were left in PE. So with dale down the back, myself downstairs in 70F and James upstairs we were all seperated but atleast we were on the flight WOOOO HOOOOO!!!!!!

Here is the view from my seat (sorry about poor quality) anyone... "I'm a lady you see" hehe, Anyone guess what I was watching on V:port?

I managed to catch dale and james flirting with the hosties on board....  Big grin

Dinner was served, for the life of me I cant remember what it was but it was nice and so was desert. I ended up flirting with the hosties for a little while and chilled...

Got some wicked photos as we flew over newfoundland and as we passed Gander I snapped this one...

These bloody flights just go on and on and on but I wasnt too bothered because the hosties onboard were FIT! I continued taking pictures all over the aircraft, trying all different angles and stuff with no real decent results

and then no sooner had I got out of my seat had dale sat in it enjoying luxury unbeknown to economy PAX. I am sure there are rules about allowing economy class passengers in premium. I didnt want to make much of a scene so I just sat on the jump seat and waited till the "Riff Raff" left and I sat back down.

As the flight Evolved we grew more and more tired... I drank one or two maybe even four vodkas to help me sleep, this didnt really work, so here I was, pretty tipsy, swaggering all over the cabin hehe, in a little bit of turbulence. I got collared by a hostie to help her prepare some drinks. I'm sure I was supposed to be a PAX on this flight. Oh well, I obliged and went back to my seat

not long after I had sat back in my seat, the captain was informing us that were were due to make our landing in KSFO so I had to take my seat and prepare for landing in 'Frisco... we had a Golden Gate Four arrival, not sure if we were in a synchronous pattern with any other aircraft but was a nice easy landing. Someone even managed to get a picture of it for me Big grin

We taxied to the stand along side a Korean T7 and a BA744 past that...

I went up to the cockpit and james took this...

I got this one into the database  Smile

And so I guess this is where I bring the report to an end. It was a great flight, possibly one of the best.

Thanks to James and Dale for putting up with me all week **thumbs up**

Hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I hated writing it hehe

Here are a few plugs for dale

Nice report Kev, that brought back some memories. I didn't realise you'd snapped some sneaky shots aboard VROC, lol.
I look forward to the next trip  Big grin .

Great report. Does anyone know how many of VS's 747's are outfitted like this w/ new interiors and V:Port?

Yeah  Big grin

All our B744's have the new UCS about 5 have V:port with the new PE and Y class.

The reason not all aircraft have it is because I think at last estimates it was like £3 or 4 million per aircraft lol

I sure hope that poor woman sitting asleep in Premium Economy never finds these pictures - rather embarassing. Great report anyway!

Very nice trip report!

I flew the same aircraft home from Heathrow on 23 August returning from a trip to Germany (intra-Europe segments on BA)...

and yeah, SFO-LAX driving is not as fast as you would wish. I-5 gets quite boring at times, but you could always veer off course and go visit Mojave on your way in  Smile That's why I fly it... but I do it standby too  Big grin

Happy Travels!  Smile

If you've got a whole day to do it, the ONLY way to drive from San Fran to L.A. is via Hwy. 1 (Pacific Coast Highway).

What an amazing drive.... Several hundred miles of twisty roads warrants an appropriate car. BMW Z4, etc.

Cheers,

Very nice trip report and interesting photos. Could anyone compare the service of BA and VS on the same route (LHR-SFO)?

Virgin kicks BA's ass...

But then I would say that because I work for Virgin... LoL

Seriously, BA offer a very good product, but VS are that little bit better, our IFE is stunning. V:Port is the best IFE out there (apart from maybe SQ and EK on their ultra longhaul aircraft)

Thank you for your answer.

Here, in Belgrade, both BA and VS are working hard to get as many passengers as they can for their North American flights. VS has a commercial agreement with JAT, while BA is offering a "full service" from Belgrade to one of their destinations in the US and Canada.

Personally, I would always choose VS, but, on the other hand, BA also sounds promising. Fortunately, I don't plan any such trip in near future but it's always good to know somebody else's opinion.

That's probably because the report is nearly 5 years old now! They will have been removed from the hosting servers. I'm actually glad the pics aren't there any more haha! Saves the embarassment  Wink
