Hi guys.

Just wanted to send some nostalgia and share with you a trip that I did in September 1981. Just to situate you in 1981 flying was awesome, normally you could make all the stop overs you wanted without paying more. Besides that beeing a teenager you still had a discount on the fares. That's why I did this trip in 1981 and here goes the details:

It was a nice day to travel, normally Portugal in September is in full summer so the weather was fantastic. Our plane was brand new ( 25 days of age.... ) smelled new! Boarding LIS in 1981 was in old fashioned way, walk by the taxiway and get in the plane. We boarded by the front door and the plane was quite full. We got seats ahead of the wing so we could get a good view. Our runway was 03, the longest one and the take-off was fast and with a great climb, those MD80's always had a great performance. Because we left just after lunch time we had a hot meal, great stuff, strogonoff with mushrooms, rice, desert, cofee and drinks of course at that time non-alchoolic. The flight went well all way to GVA, we passed over the Pyrennees that were quite clear and soon we started to descent to GVA, we passed over Lac Leman to make a tigh turn and land from Lausanne side.

We arrived to GVA quite early, we wanted to spot a bit in the old terrace this airport had, so we paid our 1 CHF and stayed for a while spotting planes. Suddenly 2 swiss guards came by and asked for our passports, we gave them, they checked out with some people via walkie/talkies, then they thanked us for the incovenience and left us staying there. GVA in 1981 was a great airport, lots of movement, lot's of airlines, great time! Then we had to move to our gate, when we arrived there we just saw a Swissair 747 taking off to JFK and we saw our plane arriving, total excitement.... we will be flying the very first 737-100 that LH had and the first to work in a airline. The flight was also packed and the interesting thing was the fact that the left side of the plane was non-smokers and the right side of the plane was smokers, I never understood that but it didn't work!!! We got a light meal on the way to FRA and soon we landed. Then it was time to get a train and travel to Wuppertal. We paid a small fortune to travel by train and when we arrived to Wuppertal we went to a LH office and tried to change our flight from FRA to AMS to DUS. The lady there was very kind and she said that would be no problem, so instead of paying around 50 DM we had to pay only 2 DM to travel fromWuppertal to Dusseldorf, that extra money will give us the chance to by the last model of Adidas or Puma shoes!!!!

When we arrived to DUS we were impressed with that airport, great stuff, great facilities but it looked like it was oversized to the traffic. We saw a few LTU's Tristars but not a big deal. We soon boarded our flight, very excited to fly a prop for the first time. Because the plane was small we walked to our Fokker. First thing that impressed me was the huuuuuuge size of the windows, I would say they were panoramic windows ( they don't built those anymore do they?.... ). Then our pilot fire the engines but after a few minutes he stopped, why? Well suddenly we saw a lady with a kid comming to our plane. After this our pilot fired again those RRoyce Tynes and we started to taxi to our runway. The take-off was nice and smooth and the flight although was small was excelent, now why it was so great, well our only flight-attendant was the most beautifull, nice and kind woman I saw at that time, I was a teenager and drewlling all over. She came buy and offered us a snack with 2 types of dutch cheese, crackers and coffee. One of those was so hot that I asked her if she put pepper on the cheese, she smilled and said that was a special kind of dutch cheese, but she offered to give more coffee to relief my hot mouth! I had my Airliners Production List with me and told her that our plane was 16 years old, and she replied with a smile - " Our plane is still pretty even with that age right?" - so what could I say? Yeah, right! Well when we landed it was already night so it was nice to see Schipol with all those lights on. Then it was time to get a bus and spend some time with a cousin.

Well the reason why we flew RAM was that we wanted to try something exotic. I must confess that I was quite dissapointed after beeing so well treated in NLM. We got just a cup of soda in our 40 minute flight and nothing else. The plane was half full and the only thing I recall was the fact that when we landed at BRU we had about 3 or 4 hops until the plane finnally landed, nothing else and not a big deal..... but we flew RAM and that's what it counts. When we arrived at BRU we saw a few Sabena DC-10's and the one and only 707-100B that Transavia had at that time, PH-TVA inside a Sabena hangar.

Well we were supposed to stay a few days in Brussels but we were running out of money so we anticipated our flight. We arrived early to BRU airport and went right away to SABENA ticket counter to try to change our flight. The guys there were very nice but they said that it would be quite impossible because the flight was almost full with a big group of japonese. But he said that we could try to get a connection via ORY with AF or MAD with IB, at the same time the SABENA guys would put us on waiting list in LIS flight. Well when we arrived to AF and IB ticket counters both guys started to work the best they could to get us out of BRU. IB guy did have any chance but the AF said it would get us in standby from BRU to ORY but ORY to LIS was OK. We prayed that we could get in the list to fly out or to LIS direct or to ORY. First list to come out was SN one to LIS, we lost it! Meanwhile the SN guys asked if we had lunch already, because we didn't he gave us a voucher to go to the restaurant, very nice guy!!!! Then we went to see the standby list from BRU to ORY. During that time SN had almost like a shuttle having a lot of flights between these two cities. We lost the first list but we got seats on the next available flight. But we had a problem, first of all our luggage already flew in the SN to LIS, the second problem was the fact that our flight was to Charles de Gaulle and then we had to take an AF bus to get to ORY driving around the periferic and our transit was a little more than 1 hour. Well we trusted we could make and here we were leaving BRU to ORY! When we took off from BRU we saw 2 old SABENA 707-329's that looked like they were stored, also we saw there an Air Zaire DC-10 waiting to go to Kingshasa.
After our short flight to Charles de Gaulle we took right away our bus to ORY. The driver was very crazy but actually got us there in 50 minutes. Without any luggage we ran over ORY like in those 007 movies trying to get in TAP counter and get our boarding passes. There they told us just to run and try to make the check-in by the gate. When we arrived to the gate our TAP 727-200 was already doing the push-back, so we lost our plane for 5 minutes. Well we had to check in again in the next available flight and that would be next morning with AF.

After spending the night at ORY next morning we were very hungry. No money and we spent around 5 hours until our flight was ready to leave. At that time AF gave a bag of food just before you boarded the plane. It was quite good with all the stuff there, it was a cold meal but they gave drinks and even bread if you needed. I think we ate most of the bread they had due to be so hungry. The flight went quite smooth, the A300 was a great airplane and although I don't remember a lot about the end of this odysee I know that in the end it was a fun trip around Europe. I don't think we could do something like this now.

Nice PICS! Once I saw the regs on the a/c door, I realized that I was on the same A/C from ZRH to JFK in spring of 1974! Great service, even then, and I also have pictures of being on the top of the WTC! And CV990, thanks for the memories when travel was not as complicated as it is today!

Hi Jumbolino.

Infact I have a book where I write all the information about the flights I did. I started that in 1979 and I have all my flights logged with airlines/airplanes/registrations/time of flight.
