SAN-LAS With A/West-CRJ900

Thu Nov 25, 2004 9:52 pm

My first trip report guys, so take it easy!!!!

21 October 2004
HP 6274(Operated by Mesa Airlines)
15:10hrs San Diego-Las Vegas
CRJ-900

After 4 great days in San Diego it was time to leave and head for sin-city.
We checked out of the Holiday Inn and travelled to the airport in the courtesy shuttle bus.On arriving at KSAN the first thing that struck me was
how busy the airport was!,there was people eveywhere!!!.The second thing to strike me was the new terminal, very modern and very clean.
So it was up the escalators to the America West check-in,this took about 10 minutes as there was hardly no que,we were issued with our boarding cards and then we proceeded to security.
After passing through security we made a bee-line for starbucks, 2 vanilla lattes were ordered and then we had a wander around.
There where some great views of the apron available, and all the departing aircraft could be clearly seen.We also noticed a bunch of rocking chairs placed in front of a large picture window with people reading, drinking coffee or just simply watching the aircraft, what a nice touch!
After wandering around for a bit we made our way to the gate and waited for the flight.
Our boarding card showed us a 15:10hrs departure but the aircraft had not arrived at the gate yet, which by now had filled up with a lot of passengers.
Five minutes later the CRJ arrived and the gate agent said boarding would begin in around 15 minutes.
Sure enough 15 minutes later we started boarding the aircraft, our first flight on a CRJ,and a 900 at that!,we took our seats, the cabin crew did the relative checks and safety demonstration,we pushed back and taxied to the departing runway. The captain welcomed us aboard and informed us we would be no.2 for departure,(Southwest 737 in front),and we would be flying at 27,000ft.
We lined up, the power was applied and we started our roll.Take-off was very smooth and I was impressed at how quiet the cabin was.We had an amazing view of the californian coast as we turned right and headed for sin-city.
The CRJ-900 was a very impressive aircraft, the leg room was adequate, plenty of luggage space and very clean. However when ever the aircraft turned you could feel the aicraft decsend and slow down!,it was a very strange sensation that I had not felt on any other aircraft.
After about an hour we started our approach into Las Vegas.Once again we had some great views of the city.It seemed like we made a very steep approach to our landing runway, but we levelled out and made a great landing,
reversers kicked in and one of the flight attendents shouted "wooohh there big fella",which made me smile. We taxied to our gate and we disembarked the aicraft. We walked up a flight of stairs and I took one last look at the impressive 900 in the America West Express livery, through some doors and welcome to Las Vegas.

So overall my impressions of America West are a very proffesional and friendly airline, the cabin crew were great and a credit to the company.
The CRJ-900 was also impressive,clean and tidy,nice interior,adequate legroom,but most of all very,very quiet!

Thanks Guys
