March 10, 2005 was a great experience for me. It was my first ever trip in first/business class. I was flying from Indianapolis, IN to Cologne, Germany.
I did the usual thing by arriving at the airport 2 hours early as recommended. Actually I was there 2 hrs 15 min early. What great luck that I got there in between rushes. There was no line at the WBC ticket desk. I walked right up and got my bags checked and I was off to security in a matter of minutes. As with security there was no line at the desk. And I was through in no time as well. Unfortunately I now had over 2 hours to kill before my flight.
Fast forward 2 hours....
I got seated in my seat and off we went. The FA's were very friendly and I was thrilled to find out they served Pepsi products. So I sat back and enjoyed my Mt. Dew. Unfortunately the DC9's are pretty much no frills jets. After a short flight we arrive in DTW. What an incredible facility. It is very nice and well designed. I really wanted to play around and ride the tram from end to end but I didn't want to goof off too much and miss boarding.
Boarding time came and I made my way to seat 2A on the A330-300. Now that is comfort. I goofed around with the chair for a while. Figuring out all the buttons and how to get the tv display to come out of the seat (which I fear I may have broken the release to lol). We were promptly served our choice of drinks. I decided to sample the bubbly which was really good. Around that time we were also served a dish of nuts. The appetizer was a fresh salad and a small dish of smoked fish. I will admit I really didn't understand the point of the fish. The dinner I selected was a beef dish (forgive me for not remembering the name.. I was a bit tired) with a side of red skin potatos, fresh bread and something else (see previous comment lol). Had I not been tired and ready to sleep immediately after dinner I could have had a dish of Ben & Jerry's ice cream.
Rewind a bit.... I forgot to add that when you board the jet they immediately take your jacket for you. They also call you by name. But it is ammusing when they have the wrong passenger list and they look confused when you obviously aren't a foreigner and the guy sitting next to you isn't a Ms.
Even being as tired as I was I still couldn't sleep long. Its just a problem with me and flying. So I decided to try out the video system. There was a nice selection of movies but perhaps the most entertaining was the multi-player trivia (which I might add I sucked at). Its like the trivia in the bars but you play against other passengers. It even lists the seat numbers so you can check out who is missing all the questions. lol.
Breakfast was relatively simple but delicious. For me it was in the form of a crescent role and fresh sliced fruit. The presentations for all the meals were wonderful. The food was good not just by airline standards but by any standards. From the time I walked on the plane until I walked off the service was great. I never had to want anything. Even when I mucked up the video release someone was still glad to help me release the display. The WBC ticket in my opinion was worth every penny. I will absolutely do it again. I will say I probably should have picked FRA to fly in to instead of AMS. That place is just too spread out. I swear I think we landed in Germany and taxi'd to AMS. From that point on I think I pretty much unconsciously made my way to the next gate and on to CGN. That was the end of a very long day with very litte sleep the previous 2 nights.
I very much look forward to the return flight home and I'll make more of an effort to enjoy the free drinks and I'll try and run up the score in trivia so my name appears in the top 10
