Thai A340-541 With Pics

Mon Apr 11, 2005 4:20 pm

Just a quick report to complement Lufthansa747's report posted here earlier. I've just put up some pics with less commentary  Smile I did not post any pictures of the catering for the short flight as I didn't have any to begin with. Was far too busy roaming the plane. I've been told that it's not significantly different from regular catering so I've omitted it. I'll be happy to answer any questions  Smile

Details:
Route: Phuket - Bangkok TG222
ETD: 1010-1135
Actual: 1040-1200
11th April 2005
Aircraft: HS-TLA "Chiang Kham" A340-541
Seat:11J Royal Silk Class
Load: J 6 out of 60, Y145 out of 155 (Premium Y on this route sold as regular economy)

Exterior:

Economy Pictures:

Sideview of Economy with 36 inch pitch

Topview of Economy

General view of Economy Cabin:

Economy seat full recline:

Notes: In economy, all seats have footrests built into the seat in front of you, except row 44, which has tremendous legroom, but no footrest. PTV's featuring AVOD are standard

Premium Economy Pictures:

General Cabin View:

Premium Economy Seat sideview with 42 inch pitch

Premium Economy legroom picture

Premium Economy another view:

Premium Economy Full recline and legrest extension

Notes: Premium Economy is extremely comfortable in 2-3-2 Config and without a shadow of a doubt even more comfortable than J on TG's old AB6

Royal Silk Class Pictures

General Cabin view

Privacy Partition

Magazine storage slot

Rear quarter view

Tray table

Full recline

Laptop power socket

Seat controller

Notes: J class seats on this plane are very similar to MH new J and JL's egg shell seats. Very comfortable and I don't get the sliding off sensation. I'd give this the nod over CX NBC, but would still have to defer to SQ's Spacebed and BA NCW, and I suspect VS UCS (which i have not tried)

Entertainment Pictures:

New Style Controller:

Zoomable airshow map: 1X zoom pictured here

Zoomable airshow map: 8X zoom pictured here

Information page

Notes:
This is based off a Matsushita 3000i system IIRC. Everything is on demand and features quite a few new movies.

Also features a nose mounted camera which pans to a downward facing view after takeoff.

Overall:

For those of you used to the Old TG, especially the 744, MD11 and AB6, this is a MASSIVE leap forward and blows them clean out of the water as far as passenger comfort is concerned.

Compared to other airlines, I'd say J is about par for the course. Premium Y VERY impressive and comfortable. Y also standing out as being quite comfy and a 16 hr hop BKK-JFK shouldn't be a problem.

Hope you enjoyed the pictures and short report  Smile

Great pictures!

Don't tell me you need to identify luggage at HKT nowadays... I noticed they have Philippine style security checks in place before entering the terminal. Hopefully at least OX will skip the luggage show shown in your second picture.

Oh yes. Had to identify the luggage. Which was good as it gave me time to take some snaps outside the plane on the tarmac  Smile. She's gorgeous in the flesh I have to say.

We'll see if Orient Thai has this. I suppose I'll be on the 747 you can see in the same luggage picture in a few hours.

Well, this is really a nice A340! I like the new interior and especially the premium economy. Sad that Thai wasnt so brave with the painting outside like the seating inside...

Great pictures.
One question, are the 747-400 from Thai also being replaced with these new Y and C class seats, or are they keeping the old ones?
Thanks for any replies, again, great report Shortfinals

Intothinair: The 747-400 gets new F and C seats with the same AVOD IFE but retains the old Y seats.

The extra security measures have been implemented following a recent bombing at the Hadyai International Airport. I believe all airlines are required to follow the new safety procedure.

don't u just love the a345? i sure love ours! the only thing about thai's 345 is the "new york nonstop" headrest covers... they make the cabin a tad cheap/lcc-esque, don't you think? a plain white or matching coloured cloth (not paper!) headrest covers would have been more classy i think. i understand that they want the pax to know about their new service to jfk, but i'm sure there are other ways.

and the business class seats, are they similar to those onboard jl and (the new) mh aircrafts? they look very familiar to me.
Ladies & Gentlemen, we will now demonstrate the use of the safety equipment on this aircraft...

Great pix, and great report. Wow she is beautiful. I seem too not like the seat color yellow in economy that they have chosen.

I agree.
It makes it look really tacky.
Plus, isnt the aircraft designated just for BKK-JFK nonstops? Those on board would know that they're flying nonstop to JFK. Its not like they need 200 tacky advertisements to remind them of that.

So unless these headrest covers are just for the initial crew familiarization flights, they need to go !

Till april 30. There are no plans to run it regionally ala SQ style on a continuous basis.

They're the same ones as far as I can tell

Thanks for all the kind comments. I'm off to the airport in 15 minutes to ride the 345 again today back to HKT. Will try to get more pictures with a bit more detail hopefully. Thanks again  Smile

Hey, anyone know what domestic route the 345 will be doing on the 29th/30th april. I arrive into BKK on the 29th at about 8am and leave the next day at 19:00. I would love to book me a little 4-5 hour trip on the 345 so i can compare it to the EK one.

Excellent photos, nice to see the bright colours of the A345, it looks more casual and non-formal compared with SQ's A345. I hope to fly with TG's A345 one day, perhaps on one of the schedule's SIN-BKK flight.

Cheers

There wasn't a single safety card onboard the first flight, don't know about Shortfinals' flights.

Orient Thai didn't require the baggage show - there were signs posted it was for TG flights only. Great flight back to BKK - alone on the upper deck of B747-246B HS-UTI again.

The premium Y class seats look just like JAL's new J class seat for their domestic routes.

Definitely looks a tad more comfy than SQ's Executive Y class -where everyone still has to fight for arm rest space.
There's always a better way to fly...

I especially love TG's bright economy & premium economy seat covers. Very stimulating, much better than looking at flat grey/blue for 16 hours.

Shortfinals, great snaps but are TG serious about those colours!! I haven't seen a new a/c interior like that since the 70's

The business class seats also don't really look up to much, with no room between toe and seat in front and a far from flat recline.

TG's A345s.

Beautiful outside... but horrible inside.

What were the interior designers thinking when they chose such horrible colours for the coach section?

It looked like someone threw up after having a festive meal in Phuket. Such colours are not soothing.. in fact, they are going to initiate air rage. Just looking at the seat colours, with the equally horrible head rest covers, is really enough to make one scream!

Notice that the J seats in real life look very different from TG's own promotion blip on their website - which looks nicer.
