I arrived at Manchester airport at about 8.00am, and made my way from the train station to Terminal 1 departures. The check in area was very busy, especially around the Charter and Low Cost airline check in desks.

I checked in, and was given my boarding card after showing my passport. I asked for an aisle seat, and was assigned 7D. I always prefer an aisle seat, although I was hoping the lady would give me the individual �A� seat on the Embraer 145. Anyway, I had my aisle seat, which stopped me from worrying about being trapped by somebody.

Soon enough, departure gate 5 was announced on the monitors, so I made my way down a narrow corridor to find only a few people waiting. I waited for about 15 minutes, and during that time, many more people arrived. It looked like it would be a nearly full flight.

We were finally called for boarding a few minutes after the announced time of 8.35am. The agent checked my passport, ripped the stub from the boarding card, gave it back to me and said goodbye. I went down the stairs and out of the automatic glass door, to be met by ground staff who pointed me in the right direction.

I climbed the steps built into the door of the aircraft, and was greeted by a male member of cabin crew, who checked my boarding card and said hello. I have been flying the MAN-BSL route regularly for about 12 years, and have never, ever seen a male cabin crewmember. Maybe they have strict height restrictions for the regional aircraft, as he was quite short.

Making my way to my seat, I noticed a lot of businessmen in the cabin, who were probably on their way to some meetings. I sat down and put my bag and laptop under the seat in front of me. After having waited for about 5 minutes, another man came and rudely threw a newspaper onto the window seat next to me, narrowly missing my face. My first thought was �what a b*stard�, before he proceeded to empty the overhead locker, put his things in neatly, and them stuff everybody else�s belongings back in again.

Boarding was completed, but the main door was kept open. We were waiting for about 20 minutes before the captain came on and apologised for the delay, which he blamed on
Air Traffic Control. After his announcement, the cabin crew did their safety demonstration. Unfortunately, about 70% of the passengers ignored them, but I�m pleased to say I didn�t!

Finally, the door was closed and checked with a torch by the male cabin crewmember, who occupied theU front jump seat. The female cabin crewmember then made her way down the cabin offering chocolates. She returned to the front to store the chocolates away, and then got settled for take off in the rear jump seat, just in front of the toilet door.

We began taxi approximately 10 minutes after our scheduled departure time, for a 24L takeoff. The captain announced �takeoff in 1 minute�, and sure enough, after 1 minute, we took off.

The cabin crew were released and they began to prepare the drinks trolley. I am so pleased that Swiss have started to offer some catering again. We were offered drinks and I took an orange juice and a cup of coffee.

Later on, we were offered croissants, which were really nice. I was surprised that even though the flight was about 95% full, we were offered croissants a second and a third time.

The rest of the flight was quite uneventful, apart from the occasional turbulence. Luckily, the evil man next to me slept the whole way.

Our descent into Basle was announced, and we were asked to be seated. The cabin crew secured the cabin and took their places a few moments afterwards.

We made a lot of turns in the air before I saw the perimeter fence of the airport, and then we landed. After taxiing we were asked to wait for larger items of hand luggage to be offloaded, and then we proceeded to the baggage reclaim area.

I got my suitcase and left through the French exit, to be met by my uncle.

I loved this flight so much. Both cabin crewmembers were extremely nice and helpful, and I was pleased to have been given two croissants and two drinks on the short journey. I really do hope that Swiss will do well in the future, as from their customer service, they deserve it.

After enduring a lot of traffic on the French motorway from Mulhouse, I was dropped off at the departure area at the Euroairport. What I like about this airport is that cars can drive up a ramp and be very close to the terminal entrance. There is only about a 200-metre walk between the car and the check in desk.

I checked in for my flight at about 1745, and was assigned seat 5D. This was an aisle seat, but not the individual seat that I had hoped for.

The check in agent advised me that we would be leaving from gate 44, and start boarding at 1810.

I went up the escalator to the security checkpoint, and put the many Euro coins I had into my bag. I took my blazer off, too. The security agent asked me to pass through the metal detector, whilst my bag was put through the x-ray machine. I didn�t like the fact that the lady watching the screen was very distracted, talking to another security lady. Usually, I find the security at BSL to be very tight.

I went through passport control and then to the duty free shop, where I bought some presents for my friends and family.

The flight was called for boarding only a few minutes after I had arrived at the gate. I think that the flight was full, judging by the number of people queuing. My passport was checked, and my boarding card stamped by a man, before I was allowed to join the boarding queue. As I passed through, my boarding card was put through a machine and I was handed my boarding card.

I made my way through a glass corridor and down some steps. I went out of a door and walked across the tarmac to the aircraft.

Once I had walked up the steps of the aircraft, my boarding card was checked again, and the two female cabin crew said hello to me. I recognised one of them from a LCY � BSL flight I had taken a few weeks earlier.

I settled into my seat, after having put my bag into the overhead compartment and my duty free bag under the seat in front of me.

We pushed back and took off on time.

After a few minutes, the cabin crew were released and they prepared the drinks trolley. They came down the aisle, and I took a glass of water and an orange juice. I was also offered a cheese baguette, which I took.

About one hour into the flight, I began to feel unwell, so I asked for another glass of water. The cabin crewmember asked me if everything was OK, and I replied that I had a headache and was worried that I might have another asthma attack. Unfortunately, I get really bad asthma during the summertime.

The cabin crewmember went away, only to return to tell me to move to seat 1A. She helped me sit down, and went back to get my things. The other cabin crewmember made me an ice pack to put on my head.

My asthma started getting bad, so I took my inhaler. The lead cabin crewmember asked me if I needed any oxygen. I declined, as I didn�t feel I was bad enough.

Both of the cabin crew checked on me about every 2 minutes. They were so unbelievably nice and helpful.

I slept through the landing, and awoke to find a member of ground staff waiting to accompany me to the baggage reclaim area. The lead cabin crewmember said she didn�t want me to walk alone.

On reflection, I can�t believe how brilliant Swiss cabin crew are. On my flight back to MAN, they were just so nice! I�d say full marks to Swiss!

Both flights were brilliant.
Outbound flight a little late, but not the fault of Swiss.
Inbound flight perfectly on time.

The bottom line:
I�ll continue to fly Swiss � they rock!

Nice trip report. I flew MAN-ZRH-MAN a couple of weeks ago and I must say my first experience of Swiss left me very impressed indeed. I recall that my boarding pass was stamped as I boarded at ZRH - why do they do this?

Very nice trip report!  Smile

The crews are former Crossair crews. Unbelievable that they still manage to offer great service even though they know that they will get laid off in the very near future. Crossair hired only female cabin crews during years. They began to hire male cabin crews in their last two or three years, this might explain why you usually had female cabin crews.

Good to see a good load factor on that route. Another good example how LCCs and "legacy carriers" can fly in the same market without competing each other (easyJet flies BSL-LPL). bmi and Star Alliance will be pleased to take over this route since LX will drop it in October.

Are you sure about this? I checked the Swiss reservation system for dates in November, and a direct flight was available for sale.

Hi again

Yes Im sure, they have announced to withdraw all services from BSL and GVA (apart from maybe GVA-ZRH and GVA-JFK). The Saab2000 fleet is for sale and some of the Erj-145 will be phased out too. Internal papers are very clear and the crews are informed "to look out for jobs" since they will get thrown out this autumn.

The flight is still listed double daily in the system (one daily flight on weekends), but you cannot count on that since all flights with the Saab2000 are listed too (but at this time they will not have Saab2000 in the fleet!).

What a mess this company is! My thoughts go out to all the crews who give the best everyday but dont get something in return from this company!

Regarding Basel I don't know. But for Geneva, LH in contrary said that they want to increase the Swiss flights.

As far as I know they said they want to increase flight possibilities, which means that the flights to FRA and MUC will simply see a LX codeshare. LX does not have a crew base in GVA, therefore the crews need to stay in hotels. As long as they keep this status, services will always be unprofitable. And it doesnt seem like LX will build up a crew base in GVA...

Regarding BSL, it gets really embarassing for LX...

Nice report, thanks for sharing. Now that you mention it, I have never seen a male cabin crew on the ERJ yet. Swiss' ZRH-STR flights usually have only one cabin crew, and these were always females on all of my flights so far.
