Iran Air, Boeing 747-100, Cologne-Cologne (w/pics)

Fri Jul 15, 2005 8:02 pm

All right then, as it seems nobody else what, I will have a go at it. The long awaited Iran Air Boeing 747-100 sightseeing flight over Cologne and surroundings. I will make it brief so feel free to add you experiences!

Here she is, the beauty that took us around for the day. Flying for 26 years and some days, and still looks great! (yeah I know, the photo doesn’t show but make a search for the bird on a.net, then you will see what I mean.

At check-in I already ran into the first fellow a.nutters, DTManiac, Cedarjet, Tugmaster, Aerosol. We all got our boarding passes and rapidly proceeded through the security check. Except Cedarjet of course, he need to take of belt, shoes etc (did he put a finger up your ass, or did you escape that). I think (and hope) that was punishment for flying on the Syrian Air Boeing 727-200 with out the rest of us  Anyway when we were all through we headed for the bar for a beer, it was over 10 o’clock already. On the way to the bar disaster struck again, you will not be allow in here for the next hour said a very strict “Be-amte”, lucky he quickly solved this crises by pointing us to the bar in the other end of terminal. After downing a few beers it was time for the flight.

Picture not allowed by myaviation.net even though the Terminal interior created the perfect background. Are we that ugly? Don’t even think about sauing yes here.

Flight number: IR3430
Airline: Iran Air
Aircraft: EP-IAM, B747-186B (c/n 21759/381)
Scheduled departure/arrival: 1130-1215L
Actual departure/arrival block times: 1139-1241L, (airborne 1147-1232L)

The flight was organize by a small (but excellent) German company called airevents.de (check their homepage for future flights here. This was my third flight arranged by them and they have all been perfect. Thanks Sebastian, Sven and how else are involved now a days.

Anyway, after push back, we were welcomed on board etc, told to try and behave and not rip the plane apart as soon as the fasten seat belts sign went off. I would have expected a safety demonstration in Persian but the were none at all   Take off went smoothly accompanied by the roar old these old hardworking engines. I was sitting on the right hand side (16K) and had a great view of the freight terminal as we took off (picture is not from the take-off but of the freight terminal). The other picture is taken while taxiing to take off, the last time before our landing where everybody was seated.

Despite the earlier warnings to behave, the plane was a mess only seconds after the fasten seat belts lights went out, 90% of the passengers were trying to get somewhere (cockpit, prayer room, window or what do I know). Maybe it was not that bad but it was a funny sight, and as the picture shows it seemed to amuse the crew as well.

OK, of course I had a look around myself. Started with a visit to the lavatories (all those beers needed to get out). I most say that the lavatories could use some attention from some maintenance personnel, they where not in a very good condition, but OK, I think that was the only thing I saw that was not nice and tidy. It is an old plane after all. I didn’t go upstairs (and therefore also not to the flight deck) as the line was almost the full length of the plane. But I did visit the prayer room, here you see a little screen that can help you find the direction to Mecca. When I returned to my seat a drink had been served, a very tasty Zam Zam orange soda. My prayers had been heard

They rest of the flight was spend chatting, being interviewed for Iranian TV and not the least taking a few shots through the windows.

Back at the gate we were asked to leave the aircraft quickly, so naturally I did so. How long time it took to get everybody off I can only guess. I believe the aircraft actually left back to Iran latter in the day, so it was not too bad. I took a picture of the route we had flown on the way out if anybody is interested.

Past customs and passport control (thought we never left Germany)? I meet up with a few a.nutters again for a quick chat. Unfortunately I had to leave rather quickly as we going back for the North Sea Jazz festival later that evening. That was excellent as well, but that’s another story.

Hope to see you all again on one of these exotic flights, I really enjoyed.

All the best, Michael

That would have to be one of the better reports I have read.

I hope to see a 747-100 one day.

I felt like 30 years ago as I saw this two beauties on that day!

That's all from my side, I think a lot of more pictures from other participants should drop in within the next few days.

Cheers, Werner

Great report there, luckily I seem to have evaded being in any of the pictures, phew! relieved  I think we behaved ourselves in general on the flight, lol. When I get around to it I shall post the full report of my travels that weekend.

Cheers,

Hi all,

First of all thanks for the nice comments Big grin

I think they said 250 people booked + some invited, I guess that gives a load of 60-65%.

I will try to make that a tradition in my trip reports Big grin
