well here it is my trip to Italy summer 05

US 2
8:25 (8:15)

We arrived at the int'l check in area at PHL at about 16:15 for our 18:10 flight. I got checked in and walked to gate A23 there was my A330 sitting there waiting to take us to FCO. I wathched as the 16:45 A330 to FRA took off at 27L. I saw a DL 752 go-around and an AA S-80 abort t/o PHL was a mess that evening. At 17:15 boarding was called and I took my seat at 17E and chatted with the older female F/A about the old 767-200ER's and how the PHL-FCO-PHL was always packed. We pushed tail to the east and taxied past cargo city and saw a Fed Ex A300-600 going to MEM on stand. We waited in a long line behing an LH 744 to FRA and finally after 30 minutes waiting we began a fairly long and powerful T/O on 27L and became airborne and soon leveld off at aprox 10-12000 ft and went right aroud a storm cell and then after that the Sony passport PTV's were turned on(gotta love US A333 entertainment) the F/A's soon came around the cabin with drinks and dinner which was:Coke(whole can)
small packet of Brie cheese
Beef or Pasta(I had the pasta)
some kind of cake
well it wasnt the greatest but is was OK. Soon I settled and watched Beaty shop(kida like Barber shop). The F/A's did a great job of keeping us hydrated by offering OJ or Water throughout the flight. Now at sunrise about 1hr 1/2 out of FCO we were served a breakfast which was some do-nut w/oj and tea it was ok. what I noticed is that one of the younger F/A's who had been nice at the begining of the flight was now litteraly throwing do-nuts at people. We now began our decenta approached along the coast of Lazio and landed on RWY 16 and were welcomed to a Fairly Rainy Rome. Pulled up next to an OK 733 at C24. and went trough passport control and caught the Leonardo train into Rome.

LH 3841

Ok so we Got to FCO a bit late due to traffic on the Autostrade. From a distanse I could see US Airways Pax checking in to PHL and was somewhat glad I was not in that line. so anyway we get to B9 and see our A300 is already boarding. so I take a seat in 15c which is a bulkhead but there is not much of a window view. one thing I noiced is this plane had leather interear. soon the fairly loud engines fire up and we taxy fairly quicklt to RWY 25 and take off after an AZ A320 we have a real quick t/o and climb out over the typh. sea and make a shrp right to get on course for FRA. this A300 climbed very quick as well. The F/A's soon came around with a light meal which was:

Turkey sandwhich or Cheese sndwch.
And I had a glass of gerolesteiner water which is much better than the crystal geyser junk US serves. and then went back to the Friedly but Robatic LH crew and asked for and got a glass of coke.

We soon decented and landed which was a very rough one. we soon disembarked at concoure A and walked through the very colorful corridor to passport control and proceeded to B27 for our 13:30 flight to PHL

LH 426

so @ B27 I see a B744 at the gate but later found out it was going to DEN and our A340 was on a remote stand along with many other A340/A330's I saw a UA 744 T/O for SFO and An LH A340-600 land(what a nice long machine). Finally at 12:30 we go for boarding and take a long bus ride to our
A340 next to another A340 going to IAD. We board through the rear of the A/C and are welcomed aboard by 3 nice F/A's and take my seat at 42D which is right in the middle of the A/C(oh god). One thing i noticed was that this plane had more Leg-room than the US A330 because there was no AVOD box under the seat. at this stand we didnt have to push back we just fired up all 4 engines and throttled up and began a slow taxi to the RWY we passed the terminal where the US airlines leave as I saw:

2 US A330
1 US 762
5 0r 6 UA 777
1 UA 767
1 UA 747
2 DL 767
1 CO 767
2 CO 777
2 AA 767
1 AA 777
1 NW A330
so anyway we are in line and after an LH 733 we Begin a long under-powed T/O and w/ not alot of asphault left lift off and begin a slow climb up to altitude w/ numerus turns we bump around as we climb up. and soon the big screens come down and on comes the airshow which shows we are approaching AMS. Soon the FO comes on with flight info and weather in PHL our projected route is FRA-AMS-MAN-GLA-sodrestone-Gander-Bangor-BOS-NYC-PHL. soon the F/A's come around w/ a bar service with snackmix and a Gerolesteiner water. Soon Hot Lunch Is served:

Brie cheese
Greek salad
Salmon or Beef(I had salmon)
one note is that on LH before a meal they serve you hot towels which is a nice touch. soon after the trays are collected and LH magazin is over on the TV they show the film "Monster in law" which is indeed a hilarius picture. Now w/ LH They kept a tray well stocked in the aft galley w/OJ and Water unlike US how they served it on carts. Me persinally I like it in the galley better because I can stretch my long legs. so anyway about 2hrs out of PHL they serve a light snack:
Coke and Gerolesteiner water
small Persinal Pizza(kinda like AA)
this was all good I have to say Kudos to LH for their food and service.
we decented and made a nice landing on 9R at PHL and hold on the taxyway for a little and watch an AF A330-200 land from CDG. we then pull into A11 next to a BA 777-200ER.
well questions and commets appriciated

Thanks , a little short of detail, but we get the general gist.

Despite the LH flight not having and IFE box under the seat, US offers better legroom than LH, though I do admit LH might have seemed better as the darned 'box' is not under the seat.

I've flown US 'Y' on 3 roundtrips between LGW and the States, all of the flights were superb, all subsequent flights have been in 'C' which have been great too Smile

Anyways, hope you enyoyed Italy, a great vacation place.
