LAX - ISP On WN Again ( & Pics )

Tue Oct 11, 2005 12:27 pm

I know I just made this trip not too long ago... but 5 days in the city wasnt enough. So here I sit in my hotel room composing the trip report

October 5 : Wake up at 230am. Make sure I have ALL MY SUPPLIES packed for the 2 week getaway. But knowing me, Im wind to forget something. Since I dont like like hotel bar soap, I always pack my own Body Wash, which has a refreshing smell to it. In this case, I forgot to pack that .. and I realized that once I was in the taxi on the way to the LAX.

Since theres no buses running at 4am in my neighborhood, I decieded to take a taxi to LAX.

The taxi ride from Wilmington to LAX was around $38.00 ... got to LAX around 430am. Though the WN counter wasnt open at that time, there was a line forming. A few minutes later, WN ticket agents came in and prepared for their day of customer service. There was about 16 people in line ready to check-in. Even though I priinted my boarding pass from Southwest.com the day before, I had an extra piece of luggage to check in. Got to the counter, showed the agent my boarding pass, and she tagged it for ISP & and advised me my flight would depart at 600am from Gate 2

Went through check-in, security ... and then wonder about Terminal 1. The McDonalds was open, so I got me some grubbin for the day. Its about 500am now, so I just ate in the dining room there, killed some time walking around the terminal until I went back to gate 2. There was about 30 people waiting to board the flight. A majority of the passengers had group A boarding cards...but i can tell that this flight wasnt going to be full.

First boarding call was made for Southwest Flight 2644 ( LAX-PHX-BNA-ISP ). Boarding was quick and easy. The aircraft was N213WN ... even still had that new airplane scent too :-P

Pushback was ontime at 6am. Instead of take-off from 24L, we took off from 25R, which took about 10 minutes to depart from LAX.

After takeoff, the FAs served us OJ and Coffee on the LAX-PHX leg.

We landed in PHX on-time, despite the fact we had to depart LAX from the southside. There were 3 passengers including me continuing on the PHX-BNA leg, so I stretched out a bit and find the restroom.

Time for boarding and EVERY SEAT is taken on this leg. We still managed to depart on-time from PHX. We took off in an eastward direction. The flight was uneventful. A few bumps upon arrival at BNA... and let just say we made it down in one piece.

At BNA, there were 74 through-passengers on the BNA-ISP leg including me. We were also informed by the co-pilot that we would be doing a reroute in the air, due to what was left of TS Tammy and traffic in the northeast. After takeoff from BNA, we banked hard to the left and encountered some prety bumpy turbulence. We flew east to the Atlantic coastline, instead of flying in the north east direction. Then we turned north towards NY. FAs did their very best to serve the passengers without putting themselves in any danger of being tossed around. The seatbelt signs were on, and all passengers were told to remain in their seats until we get to smoother air. A few passengers got out their seats to go to the restroom, and they were told again to sit down.

The air didnt get smoother until we started to decent into ISP. We landed in ISP about 10 minutes late, but at least we made it.

I on the other hand was glad to make it. Went str8 to baggage claim and to the Long Island Railroad Shuttle. Took the train into the city and wallah here I am at the hotel. Met up with friends later that evening too.

Excellent trip report. A very nice and abstract approach and nice to see that you had a good time both flying and in the US' second city (New York, L.A. being the first)

Glid4500,
Nice report! I've never flown WN, but I've heard mixed emotions about it. How did you find the service? (Note: I'm just watching "Airline" right now, and WN is not looking too good in the passenger's view!!!) banghead
Cheers,

Quoting Glid4500 (Thread starter):
Even though I priinted my boarding pass from Southwest.com the day before,

How did you print the pass the day before when you can only print the pass after midnight the day of the trip? Did southwest change the rules? Great report by the way, was southwest the cheapest on this route from LA to NY or did you just want to fly them?

AirWillie,
WN bended the rules a lil bit. Now you can print boarding passes 24 hrs before departure. I flew with them because it was the cheapest online & I also got RapidRewards.

Thanks guys for the comments.  Smile
I will be making the return trip in a week

I found the service to be good. No complaints. Only wish that the front counter would be open 4a vs 430a at LAX.

I also got the Airline DVD too. It brings me flashbacks when I used to work at GLI ( Greyhound Lines, Inc ) in LA. If you wanna hear some stories, email me privately

Great report! I love Southwest Airlines, so I always enjoy reading reports on SWA. I also collect Rapid Reward Points, and I earned my first one, and using it to fly to BWI over Veterans Day weekend. Looking forward to it, I have a -700 into MDW (where im changing planes). Can't wait.
Great pictures as well.

Thursday October 20th was the return flight back home to Los Angeles. Again, 2 weeks isnt long enough in NYC. Besides, a majority of my friends live out there.

I departed the hotel around 1155am ... just a few minutes to spare before the chack-out deadline. I was eventually ready at 1130am. However, I just happened to doublecheck my room a few times, just to make sure i dont leave any valuables behind. I walk over to the NYCMTA 7 train. Rode that westbound to Times Square Station. From there, I transferred to the 2 express train and rode it to the next stop, 34th Street Penn Station. Now the time is 1220pm. I grab a byte to eat at McDonalds and also picked up some souveniers from while waiting for the 114pm Ronkonkoma Train.

110pm, Boarded the LIRR Ronkonkoma Train to Ronkonkoma Station. Arrived at Ronkonkoma at about 237pm. I packed my camerabag in my backpack before getting on the Airport Shuttle bus, so I wouldnt have to worry about lugging around extra stuff.

249pm-Arrived at KISP. I checked-in outside at the curb checkin. I checked in my suitcase and backpack, forgetting that I packed my camerabag in there ... thats why theres no pictures on the leg back Sad

WN Flight 2968 ,the flight im booked on, doesnt depart until 435pm, so I still had time to kill...so i took the time to call my friends and say "I love you", or "I had a good time,...now its your turn to come see me". There was a 320pm departure to LAX via BWI & IND. There was also another flight at 355pm via MDW, but I already took that one the last time.

400pm, I started lining up. The aircraft, N447WN, pulled up to the gate as well. Since I was in boarding group B, I could tell this was going to be a full flight. Indeed it was. Only 3 seats was empty on this leg from ISP-BWI, and we also had a cheerful crew.

We arrived about 10 minutes early in BWI. Seems like all the passengers except me were BWI-bound ( or some other destination ). So me and the lead F/A had a few minutes to chat about our jobs, customer service, the east coast in general, and WNs newest destination, Denver. She introduced me to the other FAs and in no time, boarding for the BWI-LAX was ready.

The BWI-LAX leg was sold out as well. This time, every seat is taken.
The flight was smooth and uneventful. We were served a snackpack, pretzels, and various snacks in the middle of the flight...not bad for a 5hr 15 min flight. Due to some bumps, the captain brought us to 40,000 feet. We arrived in LAX about 25 minutes early. Landing was smooth, yet a lil foggy. Typical Southern California marine layer.

Flight 2968 was to continue to Sacramento ... and it was also time to say goodbye to the 3 wonderful FAs. They wish me the best of luck and hope I someday become a FA. Well needless to say, I did apply for Independence Air last year, but when they called me for an interview, I had already found something else & declined

To baggage claim I went, and after claiming my bags, I walked to Sepulveda Blvd & Century Blvd ( which is about 4 minutes from baggage claim ). From there, I caught MTA Bus 232 to my home in Wilmington.
