USA And Mexico On KL/B6/WN/CO/MGT/TZ And NW Part 2

here is the second part of my trip report.
After a month in the states and everal flights it was now time for me to go back.The return leg of my flight was going thru DTW and AMS on NW and KL.

i made it to the airport quite early and arrived at a pretty empty Terminal 4.
there was no line at all at check in so it went pretty fast.Was pretty excited as this was my frist flight on Northwest and i would be flying on a DC 9.
The weather in NY was pretty grey and cloudy with some rain.
The gate assigned for my flight was A3.I went towards the gate area which was empty. You have a great view of the planes landing from T4.
I sat down and took tons of pictures.which are now in my stolen camera Sad.
I saw Austrian 330,Turkish 340,EgyptAir 777,Swiss 330,American 300,767,777,Delta 767,757,Song 757 land during my wait.There was also a ton of Jetblue jets.The new ERJ 190 was parked further away next to what i think is JetBlue maintanence area.
and finally our plane N922RW came in to land.i proceded to the gate.
The boearding was called pretty fast.As we came to the door it was stop.Apperently the cleaning wasent ready yet,so we had to wait in the jettybridge for some 5 minutes.When we finally got onboard it was a rather different experience.The FA in the front was talking on her cellphone,while her coworker was sitting in the first row and reading a magazine.The third FA was sitting in the FA seat all the way back with her shoes of and her feet up on the seat while eating.This was very strange.The crew acted as if we were not even on board.This was ,sadly , to overall attitude of the crew during the whole flight.Very little service at all.I dont know how tired or how rough day you are having, that is not a way to treat your customers.
We pushed back on time and after short taxi we took off at 4 15 pm.The crew came out with drinks and pretzles.Instead of the usual "What would you like to drink?" we got " Yes??" The flight was rather short and soon we were descending to DTW.The approach was pretty windy and we touched down with a dunk...LOL
Anyway, my first impression with NW was not so good.Very little customer service at all,if any. I know everybody can have a bad day, but seriously,that is not a way to greet paying customers.The plane however was very nice and clean and i enjoyed the flight.

DTW airport is awesome.I love it.I was pleasantly surprised.Very clean, lots of nice shops, and restaurants.And really amazing to see the train run inside the terminal. I had 3 hours to kill, and it went by pretty quickly.
I proceded to my gate which was gate 40 ( i think) and boarding commenced some 50 minutes before departure.I had seat 36 A so was one of the first to beard.

The plane was very nice and clean.As i sat down i noticed that the entertainement box took a huge chunk of my legroom.I have flown with SAS 330 and it didnt take so much space.Was a big disapointement.But oh well, i had my PTV and was about to fly on a 330 so i didnt care...LOL
as almost everybody sat down the captain came on and said that we would be 35 minutes late as we are waiting for 22 connecting passengers.Not much to do about it so i start going thru the inflight mag.eventually those passengers arrived,and we could push back.We took off at 1010 pm.Soon after take off the crew came out with drinks and pretzles.which followed by dinner service.the choice was chciken or vegetables.I had vegetables because they ran out of chicken after 3 rows...LOL
it was served with rice and a side of sallad anmd for dessert a brownie.The vegetables didnt have much taste, but the sallad was v ery fresh and nice.The brownie was a bit dry so had to flush it down with some
I was exhausted ,so soon after the mealservice i fell asleep.
Dont know how long i slept but was woken up by the lights going on and the pilot coming on the pa asking if there was a doctor onboard.i looked at th emap and we were some 2 hours away from Amsterdam.Once again the captain came on and said that we had a medical emergency and if there is a doctor onboard that he should contact the crew emediatly.the crew was going thru the cabin and waking people that were still asleep to see if they could find a doctor.After that silence followed, and some 15 minutes later i could feel that the plane had started to was a bit ackward.First i thought i was still sleeping...LOL
As time passed it was obvious that were were decending.Some people got annoyed and some were little freightend.There was no crew at sight.Eventually the captain came on again and said that we are having a medical emergency and that we have to land at the nearest airport , which at this time was Shannon in Ireland.We were decending pretty fast and finally touchd down in Shannon.We had to backtrack the runway as there was no taxiway covering the whole runway.We parked and was greeted by 2 ambulances.Eventually we found out from one of the FA s that one gentlemen in Businessclass had a heartattack.poore guy.Didnt find out so much more,So dont know if the guy made it.We were on ground in shannon for 2 hours.They had to offload the persons luggage and fill in all the papers and all.
Shannon was a rather small airport.Thru my window i saw a Continental 757,American 757, Us Airways 757 and Delta 767.There was a Ryanair 738 and further away there was a World Airwáys MD11 that was getting ready to depart.I also saw a 737 from Virgin Nigeria.the reg was N306FL.
We finally were ready to continue our trip to AMS.The captain came on and appologized for this detour.But you cant blame them.I would like if they did the same for me if i was in trouble up there.As we were ready to leave a Aer Lingus 330 landed.we lined up for the runway and as we were taking off i saw a Polet Cargo 767 and a Air Union 767 parked by a big hangar.
soon we were in the air again, and could relax.At this time, i knew (aswell as 80% of the passangers on this flight with connections) that i wont make my connecting flight to ARN.
We flew over what looked like Dublin Airport.There was a lot of greenjets on the ground, and it looked to big to be any other airport.First i thought it was odd to fly north, but if u think, its maybe better then to fly over congested London Area.The enternatinement remained off during the remaining part of this flight.We were served a egg muffin and a yoghurt with coffe and tea.
we finally touched down in Amsterdam at 1 40 pm, only 2,5 hours flight to Stockholm left at 1 15 pm, so i missed it.
I think we landed at the same runway we took off from when i started my trip,Polderbaan, as it took forever to get to the gate.The weather was pretty cloudy in AMS, and after 20 minutes of taxi we parked next to a 340 from cathay Pacific.As we deboarded we were greated by a herd of KLM staff to assist people with missed conections.I was told to go to Transfer Desk T2 to get my new boarding card.When i finally got there(thats a long walk) there was almost no line.A very friendly guy from KLM booked me on the next flight.he asked what was the reason i missed my flight.When i told him he said " That seems to be happening pretty often on Northwest".What can u do.Cant control other peoples health.
Anyway i also recieved this blue booklet containing a phonecard valid for 5 minutes of calls, a meal voucher for 10 Euros and 50 Euro discount on my next truip with Skyteam.I thought it was a very nice thing to do.Wasent expecting it at all. ANd after all my new flight was leaving at 4 30 pm, only 1, 5 away.I called home to say i would be late and i then went to Burger King to grab some food.Was starving...LOL
Amsterdam Airport is amazing.No matter how much time you have it goes by fast.
After getting some food i went to the gate for my flight.
As we were waiting for the boarding announcement they came on the speakers and said that our flight was overbooked, and wondered if there were any volunteers that would give up their seat and travel on the next flight which would leave at 8 pm.For the trouble they were giving 150 euroes cash or 300 in travelvoucher.Surprisingly only me and 2 other persons got up to the desk....LOL They needed 2 people and since i had checked luggage and the other 2 didnt they got the offer Sad(
Oh well...LOL
Then they finally started boarding and when i got onboard i realized i had seat 10E which was a middle seat Sad on a full flight.

We pushed back on time and had a pretty short taxi before take off.
I had 2 workaholics on my both sides working on their laptops and having tons of douments in their As i was exhausted i fell asleep, but was woken up by the guy bext to me sneezing real loud.Which was good ,since the Fa s we just about to give out the sandwiches.This time the choise was turkey and cheese or Vegetarian.I had turkey and a coke.The meal was followed by coffe and tea and the buscuits.They are kind of nice.Called Stoepkoekje or something like that.They always serve them on KLM.
After having some food again i continued my sleep.I was awaken by a FA as we were getting ready for landing.I must have been real tired as i nodded off as soon as she went away.And i woke up ( what i thought was our plane crashing) when we touched down.Now i know why they always wake u up before landing.That was a scary experience.It really feels like youre about to crash.Anyway, Stockholm was cold and rainy this evening and we pulled up to gate 15 next to a Air China 767.
My moth of adventures was over Sad(

I really enjoyed trying all the new airlines. The most pleasant experience was Southwest and Magnicharters.Great airlines and friendly dedicated staff.Jetblue was also nice, but below my expectations. CO was great too.Freidnly staff and nice food.ATA,however was really bad.Dont know if i would want to fly them again.
Same but not as bad about NW.My first exoerience was not nice.They handled the medicaldiversion very good, but their staff was very unproffesional.I only had 2 flights on them , and i am sure there are a lot of wonderfull NW staff out there, but none of them was on my 2
Their hub DTW is an amazing aiport.If i would fly them again? probbably if i got a good deal, but wouldent go out of my way to do so.
And finaly KLM.Every single time i flown them they have been great.great service, great food, friendly staff ,clean planes.Their crew is always happy and can tell they like their job.

Anyway, i hope you enjoyed reading my report.I wish i could have uploaded all the pictures i took.Then it would be awesome...LOL

Very nice reports, makes me want to travel.....(again).  Smile

Too bad you coudn't volunteer to take the later flight and get the cash or voucher! Baggage is a huge issue nowadays and offloading your luggage may cause a delay so they prefer passengers without baggage to volunteer.

I flew WN as well in September and I was pleasently surprised! I expected less than nothing but it's not as LCC as for example Ryanair.

DTW is indeed an amazing airport, one of the best in the USA IMO. MSP is nice as well. I haven't had any bad experiences with NW (I flew them often between AMS and USA vv). International only the DC10, but I will go to DTW in January with the A330. Domestic service is very indifferent but my CO and DL experiences are not much different from NW.

Very nice report. I tend to agree with you about KLM. I few a lot with them and it is always a very nice experience.

I guess maybe i had bad luck with NW.
LOL, the bag is indeed a big issues.Me and my crazy shopping habbits...LOL
I prefer to be crazy and happy rather than normal and bitter
