SXM-SJU-SXM And The Horrible AA/Eagle Terminal!

Thu Nov 17, 2005 8:50 am

I went to Puerto Rico over the week-end. I do that more often as shopping is great on this wonderful Island. Nice people, first class hotels, great food and very much around the corner for us. A short 50 minute hop on either the Eagle or Caribbean Sun is all it takes. Went with the Eagle this time. On time like a Swiss clock and a smooth but short US$ 260,- ride. Nothing special to report about that. Why this “trip report”?
To express my frustration with the extremely horrible AA/Eagle terminal at SJU; especially the Eagle departure lounge with its one miserable boot that serves over-priced food (US$ 5.50 for a couple of slices of melon erroneously named fruit salad) and very disgusting sandwiches. Nowhere can you buy anything to read. The 4 TV’s are on program guide and nobody that seems to know who is in charge to change it to news or sports or whatever else that entertains. Nothing else to do than sit, stare and realize how uncomfortable the seats are. Besides, you have to walk about 50 miles through boring grey/white corridors without any decoration, to get from security to the gate area which is only slightly better than the 70 miles they make you walk upon arrival to Immigration. What a design! Shoot the architect. Blame AA for the boring terminals they impose on us travelers everywhere they get a foothold. They may build expensive and large terminals but I have not been able to catch them on design innovation and customer comfort for times when travelers need some diversion. What a pity and what a contrast with their outstanding performance –in my humble opinion- once you are onboard their planes. Pfffff....I got that off my chest. Hope that anyone stationed at SJU reads it and does something to improve. I can’'t be the only one or am I?

They've got a sort of monopoly within the Carribbean, haven't they?

Hasn't AA got to be the largest carrier out of SJU by a long shot?

Perhaps they figure they've don't have much competition so they don't bother investing in their infrastructure at SJU?

R: Yes they do.

Hasn't AA got to be the largest carrier out of SJU by a long shot?

R: By Far. But that is not the problem. They are quite a pleasant airline.

Perhaps they figure they've don't have much competition so they don't bother investing in their infrastructure at SJU?

R: Very likely  Sad and that is what s.cks big time!

Sounds like, next time you should choose Caribbean Sun Airlines
SXM-SJU-SXM $145.75 RT  Smile

Would be better to blame SJU airport staff on not building a "decent" interisland terminal.

It seems like you live in St. Maarten, so I'd like to ask you, how is the new terminal project going? It seems to look very nice, but does anyone know when it should be in operational use? I assume by next holdiay time, because that is when a lot of the traffic picks up.

Hey Daron,

The new terminal seems to be on schedule. It should open in July 2006.
I didn't like the design too much but as the works progress I must admit that it is quite impressive and I really hope that it will be a success. You can read more on Juliana's website www.pjiae.com

Yeah, I echo that sentiment. I went to St. Croix a few years ago (quite an interesting place actually) and I remember my transfer in SJU being absolutely horrible -- the waiting lounge was a total dump. I wish they'll upgrade it -- it can't cost that much, since anything is an improvement over this hell hole.

AA is installing new seating at the gate areas in SJU (LMM International), their terminal was inaugurated in the early 90s during their big expansion in SJU. It needs a few improvements but it is not that bad. Compared to European or the majority of Latin airports it is better thanb many and among average for US standards (take a look at MIA or LGA). The reason there are only a few restaurants in AA's terminal is due to a restriction imposed by the Puerto Rico Ports Authority dating decades. Only restaurants or concessions owned by ACS Catering and the "Santana family" (ACS owners) are allowed to operate in AAs terminal. Unfortunately the Santana's are known for poor service and monopolistic practices therefore the mediocre selection and rude personnel. Thank heavens that restriction is not applicable at SJU other terminals which are newer or recently renovated. They have Starbuck's, Taco Maker, Subway, cafe's, etc. Terminal A is also under construction and will be a small but very modern extension. If you want to fly Caribbean Sun out of SJU, they do not have boarding facilities any different than American Eagle's. AA/AE share the largest and never crowded US Customs facility in Puerto Rico. You do have to walk a lot but there are moving walkways available and the areas are nicer than for example MIAs Customs and less crowded. AA terminal recently got wireless internet (wi-fi) free at least for now.
