The night before the flight I was not tired and decided to say up a bit longer. It was a good thing I checked the YUL FID section on their website or else we would have been screwed. It showed our original flight WS474 as CANCELLED. A quick check of the Westjet site confirmed this. We had already checked in online and gotten our seats at 10pm but at 11pm they cancelled the flight. I called the Westjet reservations line and explained our problem. They offered to rebook me on WS201 leaving YYZ at 8:20AM. It was the only flight we could do since the first one left at 7:10AM and the next one after the 8:20AM one was for 6PM at night. We gave the go-ahead to the agent to change us to the 8:20AM departure.

Woke up at 6:20 AM and left for YYZ at 7:10. We come home on Air Canada so we decided we would park at T1 so we can just get into car after our arriving flight. We parked and then waited for the LINK bus to take us between T1 and T3. We only got to T3 at around 8am and the Westjet counters were PACKED. Since our flight WS201 (arriving from Moncton) was delayed 20 minutes we were not nervous. We told a nearby agent that we were traveling on a flight leaving in 20 minutes. He took us to the front of the line and then began calling all pax on WS201 to Montreal as well some other Westjet flight to Winnipeg to come to the side to bypass the huge line. Those two flights were leaving within 30 minutes. Bags checked and no time to spare we made a quick jet (pun intended) for gate B22. I wanted to do a quick walk around T3 to check out some of this mornings flights but my dad assured me there was no time. We arrived at the gate to see the inbound pax from Moncton just deplaning. 20 minutes later boarding was called and we got on. This flight was about 30% full with only about 40 pax for a plane that usually holds around 125. We had chosen seats 5D (my dad) and 5F (me) with the middle open. Doors were closed and flight time announced at 53 minutes. I then noticed the exit row was TOTALLY empty. No one within 3-4 rows of it. I quickly jumped at the opportunity and settled into seat 11A. The legroom was EXCELLENT as you can see from the photos. A very attractive French-Canadian flight attendant named Julie came to give me the briefing on how to use the door in case of an emergency. You can be sure I paid attention . Pushback completed and we taxied off to RWY 33L for departure. I didn’t notice any interesting aircraft except for a few AC widebodies including the A340-500 in AC’s new colors at a gate at T1. I thought only Europe bound AC flights used T1 and the rest used the Infield Hold Terminal. I assume the A345 was going to HKG or arriving from DEL. When we were driving into the terminal I noticed the El Al 767 parked but it must have left before we got into the terminal. At 9:10 we made a quick roll on 33L and got into the air. The fog swallowed us within 5 seconds. After about 5 minutes we were above the clouds and I had a beautiful view of the winglet as you can see in the picture. The flight itself was pretty boring. We got a choice of pretzels or cookies plus a cup of either pop, water, coffee, tea or juice. Decent into YUL was very foggy and my ears started to bother me. I tried swallowing but it didn’t do anything until we started to get below 6000 ft. The gear and flaps were lowered and soon I could see the ground and a few small aircraft. Landing on what I think was 06L or 06R used full reverse and flaps which caused us to slow down very quickly. I noticed Air Canada’s Star Alliance B762 C-GAUN parked and covered with snow along the side of the runway. I wonder what it was doing there. There wasn’t much traffic on the ground that I could see. Just a few AC aircraft, some Jazz CRJs and Dash8s, A Transat A310 and an Air Lab Dash 8. We parked at the newer terminal (Gate 48) and made our way into the baggage claim area. It’s pretty much a static scene. The area hasn’t changed in years. Still only 2 domestic baggage claims. Baggage came off and we left in the rental car for the hotel.

We arrived at Trudeau quite early for the flight as there was nothing we had left to do in the city. We had already visited everyone and seen what we wanted. We got into the airport at around 12:30pm. My father returned the rental car and I waited with the baggage on the departure level. We had already checked in online and used the AeroCheck machine to print the boarding passes. They print on very thin thermal paper which is bad as it can easily tear or get damaged. I should have used Air Canada’s own machines which print on heavier card stock. 3 hours time to kill…. Hmmmm not much to do. I took a walk around the area. Lots of international flights already are checking in such as AF, KL, TS, OK. Air France really needs an A380 for the CDG-YUL-CDG flight. There are lots of pax with a good majority of them being connection pax going to Africa/Middle East. OK was delayed till about 10pm and already at 1pm the passengers were already starting to congregate around the counters. Fast forward to boarding. We arrived at the gate area. Gate 5 is actually 4 gates in 1. You can board 4 planes from the 1 gate. You just enter the jetways at different parts. Today’s flight would be on the A333 Fin 395. Again a bad mistake on AC’s part, 1 agent boarding the entire flight. Today’s flight would be 95% full with only a few empty seats in Business class and in the middle sections of the plane. I took seat 16K with my dad in 16H. The view was spoiled because we are directly over the wing. In no time the plane had been boarded and we pushed back for take-off from runway 06L. Not much activity in YUL except for the aeroquay full of Jazz Dash8s and an Air Lab B1900 and Dash8. I noticed another AC A330 which was going to LHR or FRA. We entered the runway and made a quick roll. I was surprised with the quietness of the aircraft at take-off. 5 seconds of quiet whining and we were up into the air. YUL was very foggy and we were quickly swallowed up. Today’s flight would be at FL350 for 57 minutes. They offered us some kind of snack bag with pretzels and a can of drink. The standard Rapidair service. CBC was shown with audio available in French/English as well as a general music program. I had my iPod to listen to. I listened to Rush’s amazing performance of YYZ as we flew on-route towards the city. A perfect song for this flight. As the flight was pretty full I couldn’t move to the back to get any good pictures. I did manage to move back a few rows to get a few shots of the wing before some guy with his kid told me I was in his seat. I believe we landed on 06L/R. The plane went to T1 among the other AC aircraft. We were beside Fin 633 which was a 763 coming from either LHR or SYD/HNL . We parked on gate 145 and as I exited the plane I noticed the screen said “LONDON”. Our plane would be heading to London LHR tonight. Since AC has a base of airplanes in their hub cities they put them on short routes to move them around so they can operate the longer flights. The baggage took quite a while to appear. I noticed the carousel beside ours was for the AC34 flight from HNL/SYD and they had their bags after 20 mins despite only arriving 5 minute before us.

Another great trip to YUL. Next time I think we will drive as I will have my G2 driver’s license in a few months. Of course I still prefer to fly, always!
