This is my first trip report, so bare with me! Unfortunately there are no pictures as I lost my camera in DC.

I was going to DC for an alumni conference for the weekend of Feb 3-5. The organization e-mailed me asking for my flight preferences and frequent flyer number. Which for me are United Airlines and the Mileage Plus Program. When I got my trip itinerary, I was booked on American Airlines in middle seats on both legs! I was so irritated. So I called the organization to inquire about my preferences and she told me ¡§this was easier for us.¡¨ I then asked ¡§Why ask for preferences?¡¨ To which she had no real answer. So I told her I would buy my own ticket! I want my miles, darn it. Plus I did not want to be in the middle seat and the entire flight was booked so I could not change my seat.

The cost r/t was $218.60

UAL Flight 1226
Depart: ORD 6:40 AM
Arrive: BWI 9:27 AM
Equipment: B 757-200

So I woke up at 3:30AM to be at the airport no later than 5:30. I was taking public transportation. (For the locals: I live in Rogers Park so I took the Red Line to Lawrence and caught the 81 Lawrence bus and then connected to the Blue Line at Jefferson Park). I arrived at O¡¦Hare by 5:45. I was SO excited as this was my first time flying United out of O¡¦Hare. I¡¦ve been previously flying the MDW-IAD flight. The United T1 departure hall at O¡¦Hare is beautiful. I seriously stood there for five minutes just gaping and taking pictures. After looking like a tourist, I printed my boarding pass (I checked in online, but prefer printing my pass at the airport) and proceeded to gate C9. Nothing much was going on. I grabbed some McDonald¡¦s and watched some CNN.

Boarding began for our flight and I was in Seat Group 2. I had a window seat (forgot the row). The flight was about 60%. I had the entire row to myself and the row across the aisle was empty. Nothing spectacular about this flight. Ch 9 was not on and when I inquired I was told it was at the pilot¡¦s discretion so I listened to some music. The seats were surprising hard. It was as if there was no cushion. So my butt was hurting after the flight ƒ¼ At any rate, I opted for orange juice this early morning flight. Gobbled it down and the F/A immediately poured me another cup. Hour and a half later we were at BWI. This was my first time there so I was extra excited. It was a cute airport from what I saw. I had to be at the conference in DC by 11:30 so I could not linger too long. I was out the door and on the B30 to the DC Greenbelt by 9:40. Took the Green Line to Columbia Heights then hopped the b54 toward L¡¦Enfant to the hotel.

UAL Flight 129
Depart BWI 5:26 PM
Arrive ORD 6:43 PM
Equipment A320

The alumni conference was great. Loved seeing old faces and I LOOOVE DC so I had a really good time. I got news, however, that my best friend passed away that Saturday so that really threw a wrench into everything. I found out late that night so I stayed until Sunday morning. I took public transportation back to BWI. This time I take the Red Line McPherson and transfer to the Green Line and catch the b30 again.

I got to BWI around 2:15 and went up to the ticket counter to print my boarding pass from Easy Check-In, but the agent asked my last name before I could do anything so I just worked with her. When she finished doing her thing, she offered me to fly standby on the 2:42 PM Flight. I booked a late flight so that I could spend time in BWI, but with my friend¡¦s passing I was excited about getting on an earlier flight.

By the time I got done with that and got through security the flight was boarding. I was seated in a middle seat, 18b. Again, given the circumstances, I didn¡¦t even care. I just wanted to get back to Chicago.

UAL Flt 345
Depart BWI 2:44 PM
Arrive ORD 3:59 PM
Equipment A320, Seat 18B

This flight was actually kind of cool. The crew were more interactive with the passengers. The pilot made a few jokes and the F/As greeted us at the door. We had a young lady back from her tour in Afghanistan and the pilot invited her to sit in first class. He made an announcement, to which the entire plane exploded in applause. The coolest part was that Ch 9 was available! So I got my first Ch 9 experience. It was really cool hearing them call our flight to ascend or descend and seconds later we¡¦re descending or ascending. Snacks were served with a full can of beverage. Upon our on time arrival at O¡¦Hare I took pictures of an LH 747 and A330/340 and Iberia A340 along with some UA 777s and AA wide bodies. I wish I had them to post.

This was my first time flying United roundtrip and must say I really enjoyed them! I¡¦m all about supporting the home town airline. I was given the option to purchase Econ + upgrades but I do not think it¡¦s worth it for me on such a short flight. If this were international I would have totally considered, but I¡¦m only 5¡¦10/11 and find there is plenty of leg room for me.

Ok! Again, sorry no pictures! I really hate that, but I hope I provided a nice picture. I really would appreciate some criticism for future reports.

Good report, United is my airline of choice, I've always had great flights with them and they have a good network out here in the west with both their LAX/SFO hubs. Is it correct that the pilot has the final word over who sits where on the aircraft?
