Asian Delight, LHR-SIN-BKK-SIN-LHR On SQ With Pics

Thu Feb 23, 2006 4:05 am

On Thursday the 16th of Feb 2006, I was browsing the Internet and came up with a plan for a trip to Asia, seeing as I had never been before. On the SQ website, I found a good Fare (£560 rtn) incl taxes, for departure the next day flying only on SQ, so I though, "yeah why not"

Anyway, a few clicks later my flights were confirmed. A few more clicks later, on the National Express site and a hotel booking engine, and I was all set for the trip

Here Goes.......

Leg 1:-

Date: Friday 17th Feb 2006
Departure Apt: LHR
Arrival Apt: SIN
Aircraft: Boeing 747-400 (9V-SPG)
Flight No: SQ 317
Call sign: Singapore 929

The trip started in the wee small hours at the "National Express" station in Leeds. I boarded the 00:10 express service to LHR, which only had 6 people on it at this point in the journey. The coach would call at Wakefield, Sheffield, Leicester, EMA, Coventry and on to LHR.

I somehow managed to catch some sleep on the coach, not easy considering the bumps we faced en route. Arrival at the LHR bus station was around 05:40, and as per usual it was cold, wet and windy outside.

A quick walk through the underground tunnel system followed and I quickly arrived into Terminal 3 Zone E. As the SQ check-in doesn't open until 07:00, I sat and waited. I had many thoughts going through my head, wondering what the trip would be like, as I had never been any further east than CPH from the UK, so this trip would be quite a difference!!

Check-in opened at 07:10 and I was number 2 in the line, so was served straight away. I had already chosen my seats during booking, so I knew where I would be sitting, even before I got my boarding passes. My baggage was tagged right through to BKK, and I received a boarding pass for my connecting flight in SIN also.

After passing through security, I took some pictures in the T3 departure area......

The Lounge, busy as usual

A model A380

Eventually, Gate 323 was shown as our stand for departure, so I went to see what was there and found this:

Just then the AI bird pushed back. More people started coming round to the gate, and sure enough, at 10:00 our bird, 9V-SPG - arrived

Before I could take any more pics, some guy wearing a BAA security uniform told me to put my camera away, as it was against the airport bylaws to take pictures of aircraft at LHR. So I put my piece away

When he had gone, the gate opened for boarding, I found 4 captains and the cabin crew in the holding area, waiting to board the aircraft. One of the captains saw me (I was first into the gate room) and remarked how "early" I was for the flight, lol.

I found out that 2 of the cockpit crew were from Singapore and the other 2 were from Australia, then it was time for them to leave. The Captain with 4 stripes (an Australian) shook my hand and wished me a pleasant trip. Note 2 captains had 4 stripes, and 2 had 3 stripes.

Boarding commenced at 10:30, and eventually my row was called, I was seated in seat 42A, being a window. During boarding, flight information was given - cruise alt 37000ft, flight time 11hr, 50 Min's. The cabin crew offered us all a hot towel each, a nice touch. We pushed back on time, and taxied to 27R for departure, while I took pictures

One of the aircraft to take off before us:

We eventually turned onto the runway after a 10 min wait, and I took one last shot:

During our climb, I took this:

In Flight Service

Our climb was uneventful, and took us over Hemel, Norwich and out to the North Sea, then over AMS and beyond.

First offering from the delightful SQ crew was a menu, headsets, and some socks. As well as these extras, I had a blanket and pillow at my disposal should I need them. At Noon UK time, tea and coffee, orange juice were offered, my choice being OJ.

During this service, the smell of lunch floated through the aircraft   . We were also advised that the aircraft was fitted with "Connexion by Boeing" wireless Internet.

Additions:

Snack:

Pretty soon, it was time for Lunch, and as I hadn't eaten much today, I was looking forward to it. A quick glance at the airshow, showed our ETA into SIN as 07:04 on the 18th.

Our current position put us on a course between Amsterdam and Berlin, heading East. Lunch arrived as we flew over the Czech Republic.

My choice was Chicken with Lemon and Rosemary, Snap Peas, Carrots, Potatoes, Cheese and Crackers, Ice Cream, Bread and Butter, Tea.

The meal was served with plastic cutlery, regulation on flights to/from the UK now.

Lunch:

View during Lunch:

For the first few hours, i used the AVOD system (Wisemen 3000) to watch various on demand programs, listen to music etc. The next few hours afterwards are all a blur, as i went to sleep, this being an overnight flight. I woke up in time for breakfast, which was served over Phuket, the city lights being clearly visible in the dark below.

Breakfast consisted of Cereal with Milk, Fruit Dish, Fried Egg Noodles with roast pork, Prawns and mushrooms, Bread and Butter, Marmalade, Tea.

Breakfast:

The View Outside:

It was soon time to Land in SIN, so once all the formalities were complete, and the cabin tidied up, I waited at the ready with my camera, to catch some pics of our approach

Approach and Landing Shots:

We landed at 07:20 local, where the outside temp was 26C!! At 07:35 I disembarked from the plane, now parked at gate F40, and i thanked the crew for my pleasant experience

Views of Changi:

I scuttled off to the "Ambassador" transit hotel for a well deserved shower, it cost me S$8.40 (£2.76), very good value.

Later on, I wandered around Changi, and took a few more pictures:

Leg 2:-

Date: Saturday 18th Feb 2006
Departure Apt: SIN
Arrival Apt: BKK
Aircraft: Boeing 777-200 (9V-SQG)
Flight No: SQ 62
Callsign: Singapore 62

After taking a few pictures, i made my way to the gate for my next flight. Note, i haven't had my passport stamped. If you are simply changing flights, you don't need a stamp,

you just go to your new gate. Well, my next flight was to depart at 11:00 to BKK.

The Gate Info Screen:

My Aircraft - 9V-SQG:

To get to the aircraft, i passed thru security, which at SIN is located at the gate of the flight you are boarding (saves on queues this way).

Boarding commenced on time, and i soon found my seat - 45A, again a window. I took a pic as soon as I was seated. The seating config on this aircraft was 3-3-3 in Y, a first for me (I usually fly on UA on my trips which has 2-5-2 in Y on the 772).

During boarding we were offered a hot towel, again a nice touch. After the usual formalities, we pushed back and headed to the runway for departure.

Our flight time was today going to be 1hr 47 mins, very quick. Takeoff followed very quickly and we had a stunning view of Changi Airbase after takeoff.

I also took these pics on our climbout.

In Flight Service

Lunch was served after takeoff, and included metal cutlery. Lunch comprised of Chicken In Sauce with Potatoes, Veg, Leaf Salad, Fruit Salad, Bread and Butter, Tea, Jelly for Dessert.

I used the AVOD system again, to listen to some music albums, all available on demand of course. Popular artists/groups added to my favourites list were; Bon Jovi, Robbie Williams, Britney Spears, James Blunt, Kenny Chesney, Shania Twain, Coldplay and the Kaiser Chiefs

We landed onn BKK on time, with me capturing the following pics:

After disembarking from the aircraft, i joined the massive lines of people at passport control, where i waited for over 1 hour in a line, until i was checked

My ride to the apartment i was renting for my stay, was in a limo, costing 700Baht (£11.50).

Thats it for part 2, part 3 is below

Leg 3:-

Date: Tuesday 21st Feb 2006
Departure Apt: BKK
Arrival Apt: SIN
Aircraft: Boeing 747-400 (9V-SMS)
Flight No: SQ 67
Callsign: Singapore 967

I checked in at Terminal 2, which only took a couple of minutes. I was allocated seat 53A on this flight, and the aircraft was to be a B744, departing at 16:10 local.

Before passing thru passport control, I had to paty the airport service charge of 500 Baht, so i used a machine on the concourse to do this.

I then had my passport stamped, to say i had "left" the country, then made my way thru security, to the gate. Gate 14 was the one for my next flight.

We boarded on time, and i took a pic of the legroom in my seat.

Views from my seat:

Our captain, who i shall only call Peter, was british. He told us the flight would climb to 37000ft and the en route time would be 1hr 55 mins to SIN.

Once all the usual stuff was completed, we pushed back and headed for the runway. Again a hot towel was offered during boarding.

Aircraft arrives as we hold:

Finally we roll:

Climbing out:

Lunch was served, again with metal cutlery.

I had Sweet/Sour Fish, Rice, Veg, Leaf Salad, Bread and Butter, Tea, Cake for Dessert.

Again i used the AVOD system to listen to some music. I also took some pics of our flight and the approach to SIN, where we landed on time.

We arrived at the gate, I thanked the crew and went into the terminal to find the nearest bar  Wink

Leg 4:-

Date: Tuesday 21st Feb 2006
Departure Apt: SIN
Arrival Apt: LHR
Aircraft: Boeing 747-400 (9V-SPQ)
Flight No: SQ 322
Callsign: Singapore 322

I was supposed to stay in SIN overnight, at the transit hotel, then catch the 9am flight to LHR in the morning. Instead i thought id try to get on the overnight flight to LHR, so I went to the transfer desk and asked.

I was in luck, i was moved to the earlier flight, along with my checked baggage, all free of charge Big grin.
How is that for service  Wink

The flight was to leave from gate F41, at 23:20. I was assigned seat 37K, a window. After passing thru the gate security station, boarding commenced at 22:30 and we closed the doors at 23:18. Hot towels were again offered, and the usual safety demo was shown.

Then, silence. We sat and waited, and waited. The captain eventually telling us that due to this time of the night being "rush hour" we would have to wait for a slot to push back, also telling us that when we eventually become airborne, our flight time would be 12hrs 39 mins.

Eventually, we pushed at 00:06, and took off 10 mins later.

View from my seat:

We were offered a menu, headset, drinks, etc as per the LHR-SIN sector. Shortly after passing over KUL supper was served (plastic cutlery).

I had Chicken, Rice, Veg, Roast Potatoes, Leaf Salad, Bread and Butter, Cheese and Crackers, Tea, Walls Vienetta Ice Cream for Dessert

Supper:

While watching the movies on AVOD, I ate supper and drank some cocktails, including the "Singapore Sling", which is basically Dry Gin, Dom Benedictine Cointreau and Cherry Brandy, shaken up with Lime and Pineapple juices and a dash of Angostura Bitters and Grenadine.

A few of these drank, and i decided to sleep, bearing in mind i was already really tired anyway.

The "Singapore Sling" Cocktail Big grin

I woke up over Poland, when the cabin lights were switched on, and breakfast was served. I had Fruit, Cereal, Omelette with mushrooms, chicken sausage and potatoes.

Bread Butter, Jam and a nice Coffee also added some flavour.

We landed on 9R at LHR on time at 05:15, arriving into gate 323 (the one i departed from a few days earlier!) at 03:25. After passport control, i collected my luggage, jumped on the Heathrow Express and found myself in London Paddington at 06:35 Big grin

After a quick transfer by tube to Kings Cross, i boarded the 07:27 train to my home city, where i arrived at 10am.

I can't to wait to fly SQ again sometime in the future Big grin

Thanks for reading, comments welcome  Smile

Nice report, Mr. Bmiflyer. Reminds me why I like SQ so much too. I love your photograph of the three SQ fins. First time I have seen anyone take a pic of the Ambassador Transit hotel's showers - I know those showers well! Glad you had such a good time. I enjoyed your other photographs of BKK too.

Thanks for the great report.

I'm off to Singapore and Bangkok (among others) in under 2 weeks and after reading your report the waiting is killing me even more!! It'll be my first time on SQ and I've booked with my BD miles in Raffles - compensation for all those Atlantic crossings in Y. Thank you again - I can't wait (although spending this weekend in SFO should help)!!

Hot towels and cocktails in Y! Whatever next....apart from a good night's sleep of course  Wink

Been a few years since I've been to Bangkok and looking forward to planning a trip back soon.

Nice report and pictures, the food looks pretty decent for Y fayre. and certainly the spontaneity of the whole trip is rather gripping. I've booked some flights 4hrs before the flight goes (Tip: Always find your passport before booking!) and it is quite fun booking the ticket and then packing straight for the airport Big grin

But no visits to the lounges? What's the good in having *A Gold if you can't go to the lounges eh?  Wink

What a pile of crap!

I could not possibly agree more. LHR screws plane spotters two ways. First, they tell their security folks to stop everyone from taking photos of planes. Then they leave half of their Plexiglas 'windows' in such a warped and discolored condition that even the best photographer would get a crappy photo anyway. BAA is not friendly toward spotters. End of story.

Over here, buying a last minute ticket costs several times the price of an advance purchase fare. Unless it was an emergency my job would require me to give them advance notice anyway. The idea of just jumping on the next plane out is fun, but I don't see myself ever spending that kind of money and risking my employment unless I had to.

Excellent report. Did you happen to use Connexion by Boeing or did you see any other passengers using the service? I am curious to know how it works!

End of story

But they don't say anything about standing on the end of 27R and taking approach shots  banghead

I didn't use it, didn't have my laptop with me, because I didn't realise the service was offered on SQ, so I was pleasantly surprised!!

It's just the same as logging onto a wireless network in an airport, except you're at 30,000 ft  Wink

Uses a wireless network in the cabin, connected to a satellite linkup via an interface on the fuselage roof.

You can see the (big) antenna on the roof, just behind the upper deck....

Well a couple of these tickets was bought ex-US, and besides I have no employment to risk at the moment  Sad

It is no different in the UK either, although there are anomalies. I did pay £97 for BA flights between LGW-DUB-LGW when the flight left in 6hrs time.
